Flash Question

This is likely a very elementary question but all of the searching I have done hasn't given me much help so I thought I'd ask the professionals! I purchased a Canon xs this weekend and I am learning to use it but haven't ventured into manual settings just yet (I'm still reading the manual on that!) Is there any way to turn off the flash in the auto settings? There's a lightening bolt button that would appear to turn off the auto flash but I can't seem to find a way to make it work in any of the auto settings (portrait, landscape, etc.) There is a setting for "no flash" and maybe that's just the only option but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thanks so much for any help!

It always pops up on Auto. You can shut it once it does. In P mode (program, which is like auto on steroids), as well as Av,Tv and M, it will not pop up unless you push the lighting bolt button.

If you're only using auto I'd suggest P mode to start with. But you're going to want to learn about shutter speed pretty quick and move onto Tv mode if you plan to shoot a lot with just available light, otherwise you'll have a lot of shots with motion blur because the camera isn't always that intelligent when it comes to choosing the settings.

Not sure about the Canon but on my Nikon, we have a lightning bolt with a circle around it and a line going through it on the dial. If that's what yours looks like, that's an auto w/o flash.

If you don't have that, let me know. I'll see if I can find the manual online after I get out of work.

right, using "P" mode will solve the pop-up flash but learn to use the other modes - Av, Tv, Manual, etc. to get the best out of your camera.
