Although we have never tried to be a part of the flag retreat at WDW, I understand that if you are in the park early enough you can go to City Hall and if a veteran, ask about taking part in the ceremony. Is this the same case at DLR? My FIL and MIL will be part of the 8 of us going to DLR in May and he is a very youthful 80 year old and a vet. I would love to have him take part in this, if that is possible. Anyone have any advice or tips as how he could take part?

The gentleman Ernie (CM that runs Retreat) is wonderful. During the ceremony (usually on weekends) they have the Dapper Dans and a marching band perform. They invite all those who have served and those who are currently serving to step forward for the ceremony. Hope this helps.

21yankees is correct. You don't need to arrange anything beforehand. During the flag retreat, you'll hear a pre-announcement encouraging those who served in our armed forces to come forward and be a part of the ceremony. Then each branch is announced, accompanied by the band playing their song. You step forward to the circle when your branch is called. :)

DH and I always attend this at least 1x during our trips. We love it.

Yes that helps a lot. I really want to make that part of our trip this time. Thanks.

Make sure you check the DL entertainment schedule a little before you visit.

I never really kept track of this activity but I think it is daily at 4:30 but I'm wondering if the time of day changes.

Also you might try to get your FIL into the middle of the square, there are some benchs there that fill up quickly. I like to watch from raised up on the train station. However the color gaurd will have their backs toward you as they lower the flag.

This is definitely one of my favorite things to do at Disneyland. I usually see it a few times a year, and always try to see it on Veteran's Day.

i watch it no matter how many times i see it! i love the band and the music!

Thanks for the tip on the benches, but he would not think of sitting. He would probably one of the "older guys" to use the space! He walks about 3 miles a day in the neighborhood that is filled with some fairly substantial hills and never complains. And when at WDW, would not think of going back to the hotel for an afternoon nap. What a trooper he is and I'm very fortunate to have both of my in-laws as a second set of parents.

I love the flag retreat! It is a great way to wind down a little from the rides. I particularly enjoy the Disneyland marching band! I hope you guys have a great time! :goodvibes
