Fl. schools back in session

I know August is hot but it is my only choice. Does anyone know when Fl or some of the other southern school go back so attendance will be lighter?

Most schools in FL and GA are back in session by August 15th. We are in private school in GA, we go back on August 11th. Most the public systems go back anywhere from the 5th to the 9th around here.

We're still getting out the end of May, so I'm not sure what happened to our summer.

Kbkids, I think they feel it is ok that our kids here go back earlier because they are compensating it with that fall break in October. It kind of stinks going back earlier but honestly by the beginning of August my kids are ready to go back. Also, I like the break in the Fall. we are going to Disney during that Break. BTW, I also live in Pensacola.

Oh, I know - though not sure how a week off makes up for a lost month, but anyway I'm a stay-at-home Mom, so when school's in, it's just chaotic with trying to get the kids to school and all the after-school activities that we all look forward to the summer time to just relax, hang out by the pool, and not have so many places to have to be.
We're going to Disney that October week also - my son's birthday falls right when school gets out, and my daughter's is in October, so it does work out great for their birthday trips. My son is a big Thomas the Tank Engine nut, and he's going to be in the area while we're there in the fall, so that timed out great too.
We actually live in Pace - I just usually say Pensacola when someone asks.

Lee County is back Aug. 7th. I know they are trying to get all of FL on the same schedule because of testing. There are still a few counties that go back a week or two later but that will soon change unless they are on year round school.

My DD (17) starts school August 5th. They get out near the middle of May. We live in Panama City. Our school district doesn't have a fall break, but they have a couple days off for Teacher's Conference toward the middle of Oct, plus they have early release at least 1 Wednesday a month.

Thankfully this is my DD's last year (senior Yeah!). Then she gets to go to local community college. She will finish HS with two computer certifications though. She is in the Technology Academy and should have her A+ and Network+ Certifications when she grads.

Having been raised in the south, DH and I are used to the kids going back earlier in August. Our kids started school in Jacksonville, Fl. Here, we start back late August, the 25th next time, and everyone compains about it. They want to start after Labor Day like when they were kids. I feel the kids are getting bored and are ready to go back. We don't get done until June 9th, but of course it is still cold here so it does not feel like summer is coming anyway!!! I would love to have a week off in the fall for Disney trips, in fact, I would pick year round school with breaks spread throughout if I had the choice.

Decker96, The Fall Break is not state wide, I live in Pensacola and only the schools here within 2 school discticts in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties participate in the Fall break, Anyways the Fall break is the week of October 18-22.

Thanks Miniefan -- That is the same time we will be there (in 2005 that is) but if the break is not statewide then I'm not so concerned!

Hey Kim - our Fall break (Santa Rosa County) is actually October 4th - 11th for this next year. I just called the school to verify.

Decker96, then you definitely don't have anything to worry about, we live within 10 minutes or less of Santa Rosa county and our holiday schedules aren't the same. I don't know why these school board people have to make everything so difficult.

I agree - drives me crazy as alot of our extracurricular activities are in Escambia county, so we're constantly having to double check around school holidays - are you open this week or not?

My copy of the UG is from Dec. 2002, but it says something to the effect of.....if you have to go in the summer, try the very end of August, as some people have reported a substanial drop at that time. This year the timing is quite good b/c I think Labor Day isn't until the 6th of September.
Here in the DC suburbs, almost all the school wait until Labor Day to start. But I know many, many areas of the South and Mid-West start before the end of August.
I hate crowds, but in the future, as it become more difficult for the kids to miss school, we are going to try this time period.

Why does school start and end so early down there? Is that schedule used all over the U.S., or just some states? In Canada school ends at the end of June, and the kids go back after Labour Day in September. I just always assumed the US was the same...

Kinda takes the meaning out of the old song "See you in September"...

Here in Tampa, they will get out of school at the very end of May and go back on August 5. There is a mandatory 180 day schedule, so as they give off more days during the year and push the end of school before Memorial Day, the start date has to be in early August.

I just wish we would go to year-round schools before DS (1.5) has to start in a couple of years.
