Fixed Week/Favorite Weeks - Changes when Canceled

Guaranteed/Favorite Weeks are 10% more. For example if you purchased for example - Polynesian Tower Duo studio week 49 is 128 points if you purchase a favorite week, but to book it not using your favorite week is 116 points, there is a difference of 12 points. If you cancel the guaranteed reservation, before the DVC system upgrade, you get the 128 points back. Now you get the 116 points back, but the 12 is "gifted" and not visible until you go and book.

It must be another glitch with the system being terrible lately. They should be bankable according to the terms in the home resort rules and regulations once you cancel/opt out of the guaranteed week.

"12. Home Resort Vacation Points related to a Fixed Ownership Interest may not be Banked, Borrowed, or Transferred unless the Club Member has opted-out of or cancelled the Club Member’s Guaranteed Reservation for the Use Year during which the Club Member intends to use the Home Resort Vacation Points for such other purposes. If, in any Use Year, a Club Member wants to Bank Home Resort Vacation Points into the following year, the Club Member must first opt out of the Guaranteed Reservation for the current Use Year. If, in any Use Year, the Club Member wants to Borrow Home Resort Vacation Points from the following year, the Club Member must first opt out of the Guaranteed Reservation for the following Use Year. If, in any Use Year, the Club Member wants to Transfer Home Resort Vacation Points, the Club Member must first opt out of the Guaranteed Reservation for the applicable Use Year."

Thanks. I dont need booking, banking to be any harder than it already is.
Due to the recent upgrades to the DVC site, if you cancel a favorite/guaranteed week - the difference do not show up on your original contract points. It is "gifted" back and is not visible until you book a future reservation. Also, they are not bankable.
Were you told this is a new rule?

My favorite week actually costs less to book than the current chart. I wonder how it works in that situation. Too bad I opted out of my week 7 for next year already, by borrowing points ahead of time.

I am assuming this is 100% a temporary glitch. It is written into our contracts that we can opt out and use the full amount as @Tatebeck pointed out. And we always had to call into MS to cancel once it was made to ensure the correct number of points were returned.

Um…. they charged people upfront for those points to buy and they paid dues on them…. so they are definitely not in any way “gifted”.

This is not in line with home resort rules and regs. Did you question it? I would definitely not accept that position!
At the time I thought it was just an error by Member Services, not a change in process.

I didn’t question it as it ultimately makes no difference in my planning.

If it did make a difference, I would have questioned it.

Yeah, I don't see many ways in the governing documents to justify that. The only way I can see them getting to "not bankable" is the provision that borrwing and banking may be limiited, but even that seems like a stretch given the full clause (emphasis added):

Banking or Borrowing may be suspended or limited by DVC Operator from time to time, in its discretion, in order to maintain a proper balance of reservations and Home Resort Vacation Points in the Club’s central reservation system.

This feels like one of those times that the system is broken, and a phone representative unthinkingly made up a rule to explain something they can't otherwise explain. I very much doubt that it's "actually a rule."

I also wonder whether the points are displayed differently if the favorite week is opted-out-of before vs. after it is booked. Mine still display in full on my dashboard; I will have to go back to figure out whether I opted out before or after it was booked.

I will have to go back to figure out whether I opted out before or after it was booked.
Looking back, I opted out after it was booked. Here are the relevant steps:

The UY's allocation was the full contract amount. When the FW was booked for me, the week was booked using the point-chart value, and the 10% delta transferred out as "gift points" to account for the Fixed Week premium. When I opted out, the week was cancelled, returning the point-chart value, and then the 10% delta was transferred back in as "gift points".

I am using more than 10% of that UY's points in a reservation already, so I won't be able to test whether they are bankable or not. However, I'm 90% sure if you opt out before the week is booked, nothing unusual happens. Instead, I suspect that once the "transfer" happens, it gets wonky from that point given the recent changes they made to try to better track transferred points.

My issue is that is is not visible also. Am I to remember that I have "points" that I can't see. My memory is not the greatest sometimes.

Did you call or did you just cancel online?

Calling in the past just had them correctly return the points as normal back to you. They were not "gift points".

Did you call to cancel or just cancel online?

You can't cancel a booked favorite/guaranteed week online. You have to call.

Okay I was verifying as I was able to one time in the past but the past couple years have been using the points elsewhere so the booking never comes up. I think I was able to cancel though as the FW and normal week points were exactly the same.

Didn't know if that was throwing it off.

Very interesting information.
