The canal behind the cabins, loop 2100, 2300 and 2500 and bordering the 2000 loop isn't very deep as of Dec.. It looked like just inches of water. I just read on another thread this canal is good for catfish. Is it deeper behind the 2500 loop? That would be SO much easier to get to than the 300 loop fishing spot.
Input please. Other than the canal running from Bay Lake behind 300 and 1500 loops and the feeder canal to the Meadows Trading Post, are there any other good fishing canals in the fort I missed?
Need to know if I should throw the fishing pole in for the late Jan. trip or not? :confused3

Well of course you need to throw the pole in! What kind of talk is that !

I have not fished the canals behind the cabin loops. Most likely some of them are just drain off's.:confused3
If you REALLY want to fish,,it's not that big a deal to hop a bus with your pole and take a couple minute ride to a good canal or the LAKE. We have done this before,,(with the hooks on the pole covered, of course).:thumbsup2

As far as fishing in Jan.,,well,, it's Florida, hard to say what the weather will be like and weather does effect the fish,,and it is called fishing,,not catching.
That being said , we have had good catch'n and some not so good catching.

But I do hope you fish and catch some big enough you won't hav'ta lie about them !:lmao:

I've heard that there a good number of bluegills that will bite at almost anything. My son is 5 and easily frustrated. That's not a good personality trait for fishing. But I know he wants to try some fishing. He doesn't really know the difference between blue gills and big bass so I'm hoping that this might work out. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

st225: They do rent poles, not sure of the price. The bream do bite well, worms, dough balls and hot dogs are some things they will bite on.

FlaFortCampster: Sometime in Jan the crappie start hitting, if you can get you some minnows or some white jigs down by the 300 loop dam.

:wizard:
st225,,thats a interesting name. I see you are fairly new to the camping board,,I would just like to say, WELCOME !

2goofycampers is right, worms, small hotdog pieces, dough balls, work well.
Fish tend to move around a lot, so if the bream "don't hit here, move over there." I think your son will have a good time.:thumbsup2

don't forget your camera.

As I think was mentioned, don't forget about just going to the lake. Where the canal behind the 300 loop meets the lake is a popular spot....Remember its all catch and release.....I always take a pole when we go..

Born 2 Fish
Sorry, I lost my head there for a minute. Pole is now sitting in pack it pile.
Agreed on the canals by the cabins. I do believe they are just for drainage. I might walk them just to check it out.
Yes, I tried the spot where the lake and canal meet. That spot that has sinkers hanging from the trees, old fish line dangling on some weeds and a bass cruising by flipping his fin at me.
In fact, I've tried that whole canal all the way down to the Outpost area, (rented a canoe one day). Hmmmm, maybe I should try the canoe thingy again.
I used to fish off the bridges that the train used, but those are blocked off and VERY overgrown now.
Guess I'll be looking for some new spots. Ah ha, a challenge. :yay:

st225,

If your 5-year-old is anything like my guys, he will be thrilled to catch a blue gill. Impatience with fishing at 5 years old is so normal, ours were the same. But their excitement at catching "anything" was so amazing, now they're fishermen for life.

Have fun!!

Hi,

I promised to report back on fishing....
so here goes..

We requested a cabin on the 2100 loop backing the canal
AND WE GOT IT!!!!

It was my DS 5's birthday and they granted our wish as
well as sending over balloons!

I am here to tell you that there is absolutely no water
right now in the 2100 loop canal..bone dry...

We went fishing over behind the 600 loop right before it
goes into the lake...fun!! Lots of nibbles, even lost
a lure, but no fish..

Saw lots of kids fishing on the lake near the Bike Barn
where they rent fishing equipment..

If you are not a "serious fisherman" and have a car,
here is a tip.

The super Walmart has Cane Poles and cheap bait...
so so so much cheaper (and nicer) than the Bike
Barn!!

If you have any questions, please ask!

Stephanie
