Fish Oils as an Omega 3 Supplement

I found gummies, and I mix them with my vitamin C gummies to mask the taste. No problem with reflux with them.

Freeze them. It takes the fishy smell out.
:crazy2: Can anybody report truly never having any issues with fishy after-taste? If so, what are you doing to achieve that miracle? I'm on a pretty huge dose (5 - 1,000 mg capsules/day) to treat high cholesterol because I refuse to take statins. The Omega 3 works wonders for it but it's sooooo hard to want to take it because it exacerbates my reflux and the taste is torture. Tips and tricks? I use a reputable brand-name product that's supposedly specially processed and coated, and already keep it in the freezer and take it with my largest meal of the day. TIA

I take nature made burpless 1000 mg, but I take all of my supplements with spicy low sodium V8, can’t taste a thing, plus it’s thicker than water so they go down faster.

You might try krill oil. It may have a milder after taste.
I was on krill for a while (at the same dose as the fish oil). It did not produce the same fishy-burps but since the doctor(s) and pharmacist all recommend regular fish oil, I was skeptical as to whether or not it worked as well.

:thumbsup2 Already keeping them in the freezer. Thanks. One common thing I'm noting is people mentioning taking store brands. Maybe I'll try that. I've been using a pricy, "high-end" national brand and just assuming it must be better but that maybe isn't true.

I'll take a look but my guess is it would take a great number of them to get to the dose I'm on.

@Pea-n-Me Thank you for all the information. Quick question: Does niacin have any dangerous side effects or common drug interactions? The only prescription med I take is dexilant for reflux. TIA

Have you tried the Nordic Naturals lemon flavored Omega-3? I've never had an issue with fishy burps. I don't swallow the pills, I chew them and wash it down with a glass of room temp water. I have to take it with food because of some stomach issues and that seems to keep the burps to a minimum. The lemon flavoring is pleasant and doesn't taste like fish at all.

For what it’s worth, I use store brand (sam’s Club or Costco) krill oil. I am taking only 1 pill per day though. Never fishy smell.

I also went on statins last year. I postponed it by losing weight and getting down to 120 pounds in 2013. As my weight edged up over time so did my cholesterol level. As Pea said, there is a lot of research done on heart issues and cholesterol in general. I believe I read that the recommendations for cholesterol levels have gotten stricter due to research. I resisted going on a statin too, starting in 2013. My doc started me at a very low dosage last year, 10 mg Lovastatin. She titrated the dosage to 20 mg this year and it is working. I am not having symptoms.

May I ask why you take the fish oil and the statin? One capsule a day for me would't be expected to give the results I'm looking for and if I was to go on a stantin (I've currently got an unfilled prescription for 40mg/day of Lipitor) I wouldn't bother with the fish oil anymore.

I would check with your doctor and pharmacist on that, as there can be some drugs and other medical conditions with which it might be contraindicated.

I started myself (not based on medical advice) on krill oil tablets as an alternative as I had read they helped lower cholesterol levels after my doctor said I needed to lowered them in 2012. Both my dad had and my mom has a history and of high cholesterol. Dad had congestive heart failure and was many other meds too. I told my internist I was taking an omega 3 supplement a few years ago and that with losing weight was my goal to lower my levels. She is married to a critical care surgeon, has been caring for her own elderly parents, and has many senior patients (including my mom who is 89 years young and has been on Simvastin 40 mg for years). My mom’s cholesterol went up precipitously when she and one of her friends made a pact and went off of their statins (without my knowledge) about 6-7 years ago. Mom had to ‘fess up to our internist after her blood work came back about 3 months later and she started back and remains on Simvastin, and her friend fell and broke her hip so she was put back on her statin while she recovered. My mom since moved to an apartment in a senior retirement facility and nurses administer her meds. Luckily other than that 1 statin she only has one other prescription med for a bladder issue, so maybe the statin has helped prevent other chronic conditions? No guarantees. My internist was not hopeful that the krill oil supplement would have a meaningful impact on my levels. I can’t remember exactly why. She really wants my cholesterol to be within current limits, to avoid cardiovascular issues. I believe age might be a factor too. I am 66.

I used to see a chiropractor who claimed krill oil was purer (less mercury I think) and more potent than fish oil but he was one of the super kooky ones so who knows.

I take 1000 MG of fish oil per day. I take the gnc house brand triple strength coated variety and while I do sometimes still get the fishy aftertaste it is much better than other brands I have tried.

You might also consider moving to a more plant based diet. That has really helped my cholesterol. Don't get me wrong, I cheat a lot, but my cholesterol dropped about 30 points by cutting the majority of animal protein out of my diet and I feel more alert and have more energy.

Is your fancy brand Jameson?

Try taking some of the fish oil capsules with each meal. The oil may be absorbed better with other fat. Some fish oil brands are more fishy than others, so a change could help.

Some people cannot take stations due to side effects such as effects on the liver enzymes.

I take liquid fish oil (Carlson's lemon flavored) with a small spoonful of applesauce and don't have that issue. I don't take it for cholesterol though. For that I take red yeast rice.
