We are starting to plan my son's first visit to Disney later this year! Where is the best place to get a good deal? We are wanting to stay over a Fri/Sat/Sun at one of the resort hotels.
What time of year is the least busy? Would you recommend doing one of the character dining places?
Any other tips or tricks for taking a 3/4 year old to Disneyland? It will be me, kiddo, his dad and my mom.
Help me plan our itinerary :)
I'm so crazy excited! My last trip to Disneyland California was when I was about 16 years ago. I did go to Tokyo Disney about 8 years ago.
This trip will be amazing!!! I can just feel it!

The GC/DLH and PPI are nice properties...but I have stayed in one. My brother is DVC and stayed in GC Villas, nice .

We are more causal, cost effective type of visitor. I have stayed at one of the local Good neighbor properties every stay in recent history and had a great trip. I am going to the FFI this trip but it is short on services but longer on good beds/quiet and walking distance. Where you stay is personal judgement, economics and family size. I have stayed "near" DL but I now require it be walking distance as I am not thrilled with riding shuttle busses at the end of my day. I would just assume finish walking and be at my hotel. FFi is about a 5 minute walk, Stovalls, 15. I am intrigued by the HoJO and Candy Cane but have not booked there, yet.

This trip, for 2 adults, 5 days in park, 5 nights was less than $1,800, the Disney properties were in the $3,300-6K range for the same dates. FFI and PP are about the same walk and on the way to the park from the Stovalls.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm thinking we might go in October for my son's 4th birthday. What a trip that would be! Birthday and first visit all in one!
Plus, more time to save up for all the extras we're going to buy in the park!
I remember staying at the good neighbor properties when I was a kid, and they were really close! I also stayed at the Disneyland Hotel way back before California Adventure was built. It was so nice hopping on the monorail to get back to the hotel!

The Disneyland Hotel would be awesome for a first visit, that's how we did it on our first trip, 3 nights at DLH followed by a few at Howard Johnson. When in October is his birthday? Gay Days is first weekend of October so the parks will be a little busier, and I think it is a holiday weekend the following one?

As far as I know (and others, feel free to correct me) the monorail no longer stops at the Disneyland Hotel, it stops now in the centre or down town disney, so it is equally as close to the the Grand Californian as the Disneyland hotel.

Also, the monorail is also considered to me more of a 'ride' so the lines can get quite long, which means you may have to wait a while if you plan on using it to get to and from your hotel.

The Disneyland Hotel is around a 7 min walk through downtown Disney from the Disneyland gate. The Grand Californian around 7min and the Paradise Pier is around 14min walk.

Character dining is fun, but my son was 3/4 when we went last and we decided not to do it for a few reasons:
1) It is A LOT of money to fork out if he ends up being terrified of the characters lol. So we decided to play it by ear. You really don't need to book too far in advance for the character dining experiences… we decided to go to the park first, introduce him to some characters in the park to see how he did. If he warmed up to them then we would make reservations for the following day, if he didn't than we knew we could spend the money else wear.

2) At 3/4 my son did not eat very much. He just sort of picked away at his food. I could not justify spending $17 or whatever it was for three bites of a pancake.

So those were my reasons, but your kid may totally be into that sort of thing, in which case, totally do it. We did it as adults as a couple and it was really fun, and we plan on trying it when our kids are a bit older.

Keep in mind that if you want to go when the park is the least busy, it will also mean there is the most rides shut down for refurbs, less showing of shows, etc. Peak seasons = more attractions open and more shows etc… but also more lines. We went in August last year, only because we are both in the education field. It was VERY busy, but there was so much to see and do it never really seemed to bother our son. October should be fine and it will be all decorated for halloween :)

I'm following your thread. I'm making my 1st visit to DL the end of September kind of a last minute plan. I'm a passholder at WDW, but know nothing about Disneyland.
I started doing my research. :)

Oct for a bday trip is a good time. Check Best western park place in and sign up for the free membership I got my nights in dec for 125 a night and it is considered closer to the gates then dlh.

Chr dinning is awesome we go anytime we go. Minnie's is always my first recommendation. First it is in the park. Get the first seating on a non MM day and get in an hour before park opens. You can easily see 8-12 chrs.

Check out the Halloween party. You can get in the park about 4 pm on a 7 pm party night. It is a lot of fun and get special chr greetings.

My last tip is check out getawaytoday for good deals or at least a layaway plan to start paying.
If you want a 5day ticket. Right now they have 5 day tickets for the price of 4. if you get a 5 day ticket you could stay 6 days, with a Halloween party ticket getting you in at 4pm.
How long do you want to stay?

All in all have fun, and get Photo pass + ahead of time.

You will want to keep up to date on the Halloween thread for the party dates. It is a ticketed event that is not included in your parks admission. All guests without a wristband will be shuffled out of the park, but if you have parkhoppers you can visit the other park. We went in costume and had a great time. My husband was Wreck it Ralph, my daughter was Vanellope and I was King Candy.

You were wanting to know a good time of the year to go? I see people talking about October, but if you don't have to go then, I would suggest September. Halloweentime at Disneyland starts on Sept. 11 according to a calendar that I saw on the boards and someone has a thread with school holidays listed. Mickey's Halloween Party will start in late Sept. but the first part of Sept. is usually nice as far as crowds go.(after Labor Day) It can still be hot that time of year, but if you are staying at the DLH, they have a great pool area with the water slides! We also like the beginning of Dec. as it is decorated for Christmas and is usually not as crowded.

There is no official start date for Halloween Time as of yet -- not that has been publicized by Disney (if it were announced it would be the main 'story' in my Halloween Time at DLR Superthread, as we've all been eagerly waiting for news! :hyper:). The info should be released or posted sometime soon (by/before early July, most likely). The date on wdwinfo.com is not official -- someone else pointed out the 9/11 date on wdwinfo too, but the date has not been revealed by Disney. Nothing has been announced. I think that 9/11 is actually too close to Labor Day to be the start date of Halloween Time. I don't think Halloween Time will officially start on 9/11 -- there may be some soft openings of Haunted Mansion Holiday or Ghost Galaxy by that time, but I don't think 9/11 will be the official start date.

figment_jii is the one with the list of school holidays and various calendar events in and around Disneyland Resort.

We also have no idea what's happening with Mickey's Halloween Party this year -- we can only assume that it will stick to tradition and start on the last Friday in September, but anything could happen. It could start even earlier in September than that. This year is a big mystery because of the heavy focus on the 60th anniversary events. We're not yet sure if everything is going to be business as usual for Halloween Time, or if certain Halloween Time events might be impacted somehow. We will find out soon!

Thanks for all of the replies!!

His birthday is at the end of October, the 23rd. So we'd probably either go the week before or the week after...or into November. Nothing is set in stone yet.
The walks to the park from the resort hotels aren't that long at all, then? Nice! Sounds like it might be faster to walk than to utilize the monorail fi you're trying to get to the park/hotel quickly.

The package I'm looking at ( through Costco) includes the character breakfast. If it didn't, we probably wouldn't pay extra to do it. At least not this trip.
The getawaytoday.com deals list $350 in coupons. Does anyone know what the coupons are? Are they something useful?
I'm not worried about some of the rides being closed for refurbishment, at least not right now. I'd prefer to go when the crowds are lighter anyhow. Same thing with the Halloween party. I can same money for extra souvenirs and whatnot by skipping the party. Logan will not know the difference either way!
When does the park typically dress up for Halloween/Christmas? As long as the haunted mansion and pirates are open, that's all I care about, lol!
Also, how long is the 60th celebration on for? is it over at the end of this year, or is it going to run for a full year? I want to go during the celebration, so I might even push the trip out to January if I can score better prices!

Thanks!!

To answer your question about when the park dresses up for Halloween and Christmas... I will explain (those are my main niches here on the board, so when someone mentions Halloween or Christmas, I hear the call and come running! :lmao:).

In a normal year, Halloween Time would probably start on Friday of the week after Labor Day week. Last year it started on September 12th, but Labor Day was on September 1st. This year Labor Day is on 9/7, and I think that 9/11 might be too early for a Halloween Time start date. Also, we don't know if the events of the 60th will in any way interfere with Halloween Time or the holidays.

Halloween Time will inevitably start by or before 9/18, with a best guess of somewhere between 9/12 - 9/15 (because of the season's popularity). Before the official start date, pumpkins will begin appearing over the Disneyland turnstiles and assorted Halloween/Fall-ish things will start to pop up in the shops on Main Street.

Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy will open on the first day of Halloween Time in September (whatever that date turns out to be). Haunted Mansion Holiday will remain open all through Halloween Time and the Holiday season, into early January of 2016. Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy will probably close after Sunday, 11/1, I am guessing. The Halloween Carnival at Big Thunder Ranch will close right after Halloween Time ends to get its Holiday season overlay, for which it will become the Jingle Jangle Jamboree in mid-November.

Mickey's Halloween Party would usually begin on the last Friday in September, and then last through the whole month of October (every Friday, most Tuesdays and some other nights thrown in). This year we don't know if it is starting earlier or later than usual.

The Holiday season is a much more involved, extensive effort around the entirety of Disneyland Resort. Whereas Halloween Time mainly takes place in Disneyland, the Holiday season involves both parks, all 3 hotels and Downtown Disney. So, even before Halloween Time ends, there will be traces of holiday décor sneaking into certain lands. Everything has to be set up by the first or second weekend in November.

Most holiday entertainment and ride overlays (such as It's a Small World Holiday) will soft open before Veterans Day or by Veterans Day weekend, and before the holiday season officially starts, but some things won't begin until the official start or after. The holiday season will officially start after Veterans Day. I am guessing that this year, the holidays will officially begin somewhere between 11/12 and 11/16.

The 3 Disney hotels begin to get their decorations about 9 days before Thanksgiving, so around 11/17 this year, and then the gingerbread house in the Grand Californian Hotel lobby should be fully installed by Thanksgiving. The ice rink and Winter Village in Downtown Disney will probably be open by the weekend of 11/13-11/15, or a couple of days later.

The new shows for the 60th are supposed to last at least through the end of this year, but we don't know how far into 2016 they will extend.

My birthday is also Oct. 23 and that week is one we are considering for our first trip.

Interested in all these tips!

So go after the second week in November if we want to see the park set up for the holidays!
Thanks for the info, Sherry!
Happy early birthday to you, RCMommy!

Thank you! I hope you all have an amazing trip. I would love to read how your planning is going. I am right there with you!
