Purchased DVC memberships for both the Boardwalk and Beach Club and last week went 'home' for our first visit. Made my ressies for the Boardwalk last February and the only request I had was non-smoking, MEDICAL REASONS. 3 days prior to leaving, called to confirm my ressies again stating non-smoking, MEDICAL REASONS. Even ofered to fax/bring in a note from my doc. Was told no problem, it's in the system. After a long day of flying from Seattle to Orlando, going up to the desk to proudly announce I'm a DVC, meet up with CM Linda. As she was putting in all my info, she started muttering to herself and said she'd be right back. About 10 minutes of standing like fools at the desk, she comes out some door and announces, "We have a situation here". Wrong words, no matter what situation there is. Ends ups there were NO non-smoking rooms available! She proceeded to tell me that I should of stated my request was for medical reasons!! Our options were to stay in the smoking room or stay one night in a nonsmoking room, change to another nonsmoking room and then finally on day 3 of our trip, settle into one room.
We went to see the smoking room, which at the time, smelled not too bad.
Being as exhausted as we were and not wanting to spend 3 days like nomads moving from room to room, decided to stay where we were. While waiting for our luggage to arrive, husband went to turn on the lamp next to the bed, no lightbulb! I opened the fridge, food in it from prior guests! Then went to the bathroom where the toilet and shower are, NEVER CLEANED! Well, Linda sure 'had a situation' going at this point! I called downstairs and said I didn't want Linda, I expected a manager in my room immediately. I was so upset I was ready to just get my luggage and go to a hotel. Never, in all the years we've traveled, have enountered such poor service. James, a kindly manager from Tennessee came up along with the houskeeping manager (who looked like he was about 25 and scared to death). James (the manager) offered to walk us down to the Flying Fish and have us seated immediately and have dinner on the Boardwalk. To us at this point, he had done things right. Even during dinner, he came back to see how dinner was (By the way, the Flying Fish was one of the best meals we had). We go back to our room, all is cleaned and well, until my husband goes to the bedroom to turn on the lamp, still no light bulb! We just started laughing. Nothing else to do at this point. By the way, only through reading these boards, I was aware we were to be given a print out of all our reservations for dining, etc upon check in. Never did receive it, had to go back down the next day and request that and the "Welcome Home" folder. Even though our room didn't smell of smoke on day one, as each day progressed, the odor became very evident. To sit on the patio, our neighbor was also outside, smoking, and had to deal with smoke wafing over to us. I ended up calling my doc back in Seattle and getting an rx for an inhaler called in for me. Not too happy. Some housekeeping, upkeep issues that really concern us. The ceiling light next to the washer/dryer was out and never replaced, the latch to the bathroom door was broken and you couldn't close the door completely, the resin furniture on the deck was awful, I mean fithy and when we first checked in there were matches left on the patio floor and some food, obviously never swept by housekeeping and even during our stay, never swept. We thought the room itself was very nice, bed comfy, had the dishes, pots, pans, etc we needed, very quiet room. It's the general housekeeping, upkeep that have us concerned, not to mention we feel as if we're being penalized that we live on the West Coast and cannot check in as early as some people do and so get the 'left overs' even though I needed a nonsmoking room for MEDICAL REASONS.
As of right now, am seriously considering selling our membership. Sadly, Disney just isn't for us. We didn't ask for a certain room # with a certain view, next to some certain pool and not too far down the hallway so we wouldn't have to walk far after a day in the parks. All we asked for was a nonsmoking room and a room that had been cleaned, had working lights, in fact, in one lamp, just a light bulb and not the prior guests uneaten food left. Guess our expectations are just too high.

Disappointed? You better believe it!

I can understand your disappointment and especially since this was your first trip as a DVC member. Rather than sell your membership right away, try giving DVC a call or e-mail and expressing your concerns to them. It's extremely important that they are made aware of your issues. If they seem unconcerned after speaking with them, then that might be the time to consider selling.

Though your experience is probably not the norm, that's not a comfort when it happens. In all likelihood, your next trip will be everything that this one wasn't, but of course, DVC will refuse to guarantee that you will receive a N/S room and that your room will be clean upon check-in. Sometimes it seems like DVC works best for people who are happy simply getting "a room" with no other expectations. Maybe you should try at least one more trip though and see if things improve.

Good luck with your next trip!

I am so sorry that happened to you. You must have been so tired and frustrated. Whatever you decide I hope things work out for you. Wow!

All the best,

Lisa

OH no! I really suggest that you dont right DVC and Disney off so quickly. ON our first trip home, we also had a non-smoking for medical reasons request. It was SSR's very first night open and they had put us in a room that had never been smoked in before, thinking that would be just fine. We didnt notice a thing until the couple in the adjoinging room began smoking adn seemingly puffed it out right under the door. We had to move in the middle of the night, which sucked. However every trip before and since then has been great.

Although things do happen throughout the day when people are comming and going, rooms are usually assigned days in advance, so its doubtful you'd run into the same problem again.

Dont leave the neighborhood!

Hi,

Sorry to hear of the bad experience!!! Don't give up though!! Think good thoughts & try again.

I am so disappointed for you. I know the excitement and anticipation of that first trip "Home". I think if/when you make your next ressie you tell MS of your disastrous first trip and that you DO need Non smoking for medical reasons. When we had a problem with a room we were given the name of a CM who handles problems and on our next visit she made sure everything was good. I don't know if she is still in that position but I would be happy to give it her name to you if you PM me.
What surprised me is that the Boardwalk is known to preassign rooms and not use room ready like OKW. There must have been a lot of reassignments that day.

I can really empathize with you on your first trip "home". But take it from someone else who had a disasterous first trip home several years ago-please call DVC, and PLEASE try again. We also had a disasterous first trip home-I too seriously considered selling our DVC. Things were so bad all week that I dissolved into a screaming, crying melt-down on my last day-right in the middle of MGM (I'll bet you've seen children melt down-ever see it in a 50 yo?). We wrote letters of complaint and tried DVC again. Three years and about 14 DVC stays later, are we ever glad we gave DVC a second chance! And unfortunately, even though hotels say they "guarantee" non-smoking rooms, in actuallity they don't! The "guarantee" is meaningless. DH, who travels a lot, has had several instances where his reserved, guaranteed, non-smoking room has mysteriously disappeared at check-in at hotels.

Sorry to hear about your experience. DH has asthma and we too live in dread of receiving a smoking room. We live in England and we also arrive late in the day and very tired. Fortunately we have never been given a smoking room.

The whole smoking issue is a nightmare, here people can smoke in restaurants so that is horrible for us. At least at WDW we can eat in a smoke free environment!

Don't give up. You were just very unlucky. Please try DVC again. We have had 3 wonderful DVC trips so far. I would hate for you to miss out because of this unfortunate first trip.

Glad you enjoyed Flying Fish, we love it there.

All the best,
Mandy ::MinnieMo

Write to Disney Vacation Club <members@disneyvacationclub.com>. You have most of the information documented already.

Tell them your member number, name, and dates of stay with resort, and phone number and email to reach you.

Tell them the bad, and the good, and see if you can get any of your concerns resolved.

So sorry you had an off trip.

Goldi

Sorry you had such a bad experience!

What time did you check in? I'm afraid with us checking in at 9pm that will happen to us too.

Did your ressie say - non-smoking for medical reasons?

The non-smoking thing is certainly a problem at the resorts from the sound of it - I'm in the camp of making all of the rooms non-smoking and then it wouldn't be a problem anymore! Or less smoking - obviously there is more demand for non-smoking....
The cleanliness thing, to me, is completely unacceptable. Write letters, make phone call - if we EVER get a nasty room - there will be a lot of people hearing about it! You did the right thing calling the manager right away - and he does seem to have handled everything great- but it never should be an issue in the first place!
Hopefully you'll give it a second try - but I would have also been very upset and disappointed with a dirty room.

I feel your pain!!! We fly out of Portland, OR and try to get the earliest flights possible so we can get to the resorts early enough to avoid the NS Room issue. Our DD has asthma so we have to be very careful as well. It would be interesting to see some stats on how many people actually request smoking optional rooms compared to how many of these rooms are available. All we ever hear about is non-smokers forced to take a s.o. room -- it's very rarely the other way around.

As for selling your membership -- this situation happens in every hotel/resort in the world. Think twice before you make your decision and make sure it's for the right reasons. If you know for a fact that you will be returning to WDW...give it another chance. Good luck! :goodvibes

We checked in at about 530-6pm ish.
No, the ressie did not say nonsmoking for medical reasons, but wasn't concerned since when I called 3 days prior to leaving, I was reassured there wouldn't be a problem since it was noted!

DON'T feel bad... Last year we had a late day flight... wound up trying to check in close to 11pm.... we were exhausted. Anyhow, same thing happened, no non-smoking rooms, even though we requested due to medical.... they had one room left & I was not taking it, no matter... they finally got us a room at the regular WL for one night, we were moved the next day...

Never take a smoking room if you are NS due to medical... even if it means you have to move the next day... it's not worth the risk to your health.

In general these are Disney problems, not DVC... it's a property wide problem. Now I'm just not EVER checking in late again... we'll be checking in at 6pm on Thursday, hope that's not too late...

Dear debbie:

It is horrible what you went through, especially on your first trip home!

You and your DH are clearly 'reasonable' people as in the midst of this fiasco you were able to recognize that the manager 'did the right thing' and even laugh about the missing light bulb.

Please, please take the advice already given and write to the DVC. I would hope that they would respond to your complaints, and make improvements and perhaps refund your points.

-Tony

P.S. if you really want to sell, pm me, I need BCV to complete my full house!

I am so sorry your first trip was not up to standard. I would contact DVC even if you have to go as far as contacting Jim Lewis. Your first trip home was unexceptable. I can understand your tiredness after flying all day and finding out the one and only request you made was not honored.

We had ended up several smoking rooms and or optional smoking rooms and yes the first day/night you dont notice the smell until the next day when the oderizer is gone. I will no longer accept another smoking room again. If the smoking room is going to bother me the whole trip then the trip was a waste.

Dvc calls them "Home away from Home" Hey DVC my Home is a non smoking Home :rotfl: :teeth:

:wizard: Pixie dust to you and your family for future returns "Home" :wizard:

I almost had to take non-smoking at HH.

but I say try again, it took them a long time - but they did find me one.

I am also allergic to tobacco and other things that are smoked. (yes I mean it that way)

they can cause me asthma.

so you definitely have my sympathy.

I don't know why it is not on your list (yes DVC kepts a list) - since you told them again and again - it was non-smoking medicine reasons.

if you are check in late - I would go with a hotel near the airport that has a shuttle - then take your rental car or Disney transportation the next morning.

now when you get there you might not get the non-smoking you want - but during the day you probably will.

I would call member service now - and ask that it be on your PERNAMENT reservation request - if they can't do it that way - ask to speak to someone who can.

try to rework it

Medical request: non-smoking - I think is how it appears on my reservations.

oh sometimes the MS only wants to put non-smoking - I make sure they understand that I need more.

I wonder if Disney and DVC ever consider giving an incentive to people willing to a) wait until 7pm to get their room and b) willing to accept any room assignment that is continuous. I'd take a handicapped smoking room if they would change out all of the linens and leave an ionic breeze in the room after they use the big deorderizer in it. Give me a little incentive to go with it...a few developer points to use for the year...a free breakfast...a bigger cash discount for one stay...or even a 2pm check-out.

The point being that there are people who are easily satisfied being placed in rooms that could be used for those who have greater requirements for one reason or another. You MIGHT end up with a smoker who checks in late being forced into a non-smoking room but that could happen anyway.
