I am planning on traveling to Fort Wilderness with a 35 Foot Forest River Travel Trailer along with my wife and 2 younger children, ages 4 and 1.

Is there a better loop than another for a family and camper that meet these criteria?

Is there anything that we should know about Fort Wilderness that we should know or at least think about?

Is early September a good time of the year for us?

Thanks!

David

We really enjoyed the location of the 400 loop, but think you would also be happy with any other location in the Fort. Have heard that the 1400 loop can be a tight turn with a larger rig if you get the inside loop. There are plenty of large sites that can handle the trailer you have, but the turns on some loops can be a little tight.

You should know that Fort Wilderness is an addicting place full of fun times and very convenient to the Magic Kingdom. Prepare to watch money disappear as you go back time after time!

Early September can still be hot (we went in August during a time that was pretty unpleasant, but still had a good time). I think you will find it hot, but not so crowded and able to take it slow and easy at that time of year.

Hi David - Welcome to the boards! Good name BTW.

Take a look at the maps of the Fort posted in the stickeys. A couple things to consider. Do you want to be closest to the marina area, or to the Meadows Pool area? Also, some loop have playgrounds next to them, some don't. That's good with kids your ages. We typically book a Premium site with our motorhome as I like the extra size of the pad for backing in a setting up. Many folks prefer other site types with the sand pad, especially if setting up a tent.

I like the 500 loop as its easy to get around, most sites are good sized and easy to get in to, it is across the street from a playground and the dog park, and close to the marina area. But decide what's important to you and go that route.

Have fun!

We went the week of September 7th this year. It was pretty warm but as long as your trailer is air conditioned, you should be fine. Make sure you plan to spend plenty of time at The Fort. Lots of stuff to do, places to explore.

Right now I am tentatively planning on going in September, also. If we are there at the same time, stop by the Outback for a Kungaloosh. I figure anybody with two kids age 4 and 1 could use one sometime.

Nice offer Jim, and I'm sure you are right!

We were there the first week of the past September, and it was still pretty warm, but not like July heat. We arrived in the middle of the week and the Fort was pretty dead, but by the weekend it was filled. The parks were crowded, but not as bad as they were when we went over Memorial Day Weekend. The free dining plan incentive (that is offered to guests staying virtually anywhere other than the Fort) beginning in September brings a lot of people to the park. You'll have a good time regardless, and your 4 year old will love it. I like loop 700, close to the settlement and marina, and the sites seem to be a little bigger.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my post. You have certainly given me some great information, and I am looking forward to the kungaloosh too!

We would greatly appreciate any other advice or suggestions that someone wants to offer.

David

IMHO....

Try reading some of the golf cart threads on here. Lots of different opinions as to whether or not you "need" one. The Fort is ginormous! My husband believes golf carts are a requirement at the Fort, particularly with small children.

We've done the Fort only twice. Once without a cart and once with a cart. With a cart made for a much nicer experience, especially with a 4 year old.

Early September will still be pretty darn hot here in Florida, so make sure the AC is in good working order.

You're in for a fun time!

I am with the cart people. We were adamant that we were not going to get one. However, we got one the 2nd day! It was much easier with small children. Made it simpler to get the pool/crafts/boat dock/busses, etc.
