First timer strategy?

Will be going to DLR for the first time with my MIL, DH, and 3 year old DD. We are getting 5 day tickets. Do you recommend following a schedule and zig zagging across the parks or just going with the flow? The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland had some schedules that seem like big time savers/line reducers but I wonder if these are too regimented and allow for less organic enjoyment of the parks? Idk if that makes sense. Any advice?

With 5 days, you have plenty of time to experience everything. Make whatever dining reservations you definitely want and then just go with the flow for the rest of the time. Are you staying on-site? If so, then I would plan your park days around which one you get early entrance for. Or, do you have a Magic Morning pass? If so, then plan one day around that.

Other than that, just enjoy your time don't over plan. That would be my suggestion.

We plan on staying at DLH so we will be close. Thanks for the input!

Then definitely plan your days around your early entrance. You don't need to stay in that specific park all day but I'd definitely plan your mornings around that.

With a 3 year old, I would not follow a set schedule. I went to DLR in mid-November with a 3 and 5 year old, and it was ultimately easiest (for us, but your family might be different) to know where we wanted to start the day and if there were any timed events we wanted to do (e.g., see a show or the parades). Then the rest of the day was fluid; we did whatever caught our (i.e., the kid's) eyes. I would always recommend going with the flow because you never know who you'll see or what the little ones will want to do.

For example, we were heading from Dumbo to Tea Cups, but along the way, we saw Captain Hook meeting guests, so we headed over there instead. By being fluid, we also didn't have to worry if we stayed in one place for a while (e.g., the kid's spent two hours on Tom Sawyer's Island, which we figured we'd be done within about 45 minutes). We didn't have a schedule to meet, so it was fine to stay there until the kids were done.

With 5-days in the parks, I think you have enough time to do most of what you want without having to follow a regimented schedule.

I'm a planner, I'm taking my 3 and 5 year old in 45 days. I have 4 days hoppers and a general plan for each day like this

Wednesday arrive at gch and check in
Try to get rsr fast passes
Do bugs land/ little mermaid, etc
Lunch at fiddler fifer
Nap
Hit Disneyland ride the train, toon town
Dinner at big thunder ranch

Thursday
Mm at Disneyland fantasyland
Brunch at Minnie and friends
Adventure land
Nap
Dinner at pacific wharf
Parade

If it is your first time you should take in one park per day on the first two days.
So one day at Disneyland and one at Disney California Adventure. Then park hop to your favorite things on the rest of the days that you will be there.

Extra Advice:
- Get to the park 15-30 minutes before the park officially opens.
- Take a hotel break around 1pm-3pm. Come back to experience the parks at night.
- The Fantasmic FP dining reservation seems to be your best bet if you want to watch Fantasmic without the stress of the normal FP.
- Once you have done most of the things at the parks, try to see things that most people just pass by. For example, the marching band, Dapper Dans, etc...
