We've been to WDW five times and have always had a great time. That said, we have never been at a peak time -- always in late January or early February. This year (for the first year in forever) my kids have two full weeks off around the holidays. We are thinking of making a trip to CA and spending our last few days at DL.

I'm not afraid of crowds and am trying to get up to speed on the WDW vs. DL differences. But, I don't know if I'm up for code black/wall to wall crowds. We'd stay at one of the hotels where we could walk and would spend three days so we wouldn't feel super rushed.

How are those days after New Year's when they fall during the week? Insane? Crowded but doable?

It will still be HolidayTime at DLR, so it will still be pretty crowded. Not as bad as the week between Christmas and New Year's, but many schools won't be back in session yet, so there will still be lots of people who want to squeeze in one last holiday visit. Keep an eye on the AP Blockout Calendar. When the blockouts lift for the lower passes, the crowds will swell because those passholders will want one last chance to see what they've been missing for the past few weeks. With good planning and organization, good FP/MP skills, and a positive attitude, you can still have a great time!

This thread is a good place to start with your planning: A DLR Guide for WDW Vets.

Not sure of the crowds at that time (just got back from our second trip, we are WDW vets) but one thing you need to do is get the Max Pass so you can make FP on your phone. It worked very well for us. Also get to the parks early. They open the gates early (rides didn't start until posted time) but as soon as you scan your ticket you can make FP selection if you have Max Pass.
