"First time we have ever agreed"... backhanded compliment?

Note to self: Put cardaway in the "doesn't want me to say 'hey we finally agree' file". It's right in back of the "it's offensive when someone without children offers child rearing advice" and the "I hate the " :goodvibes " smiley" files.

Seriously, I don't think people are trying to be offensive even half the time we immagine they are!

Not sure why that comment was necessary.

All I'm saying is that it's really hard to never say anything that someone is going to find offensive and if someone said that to you, I'd bet money they didn't mean anything by it.

Just so you know, it I'm trying to offend you, you'll know it. Just ask anyone.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I have my "files", too...

Do you have a "list", too? I didn't, but now have a mental list. Posters come and go so it's a very fluid list, partially because of my bad memory. :teeth: I only have 2 people on it now--I did have a third person, but I worked through it in my mind so they were taken off. :lmao:

Well, I'll admit to saying it on occasion, and yes, what I meant by it was "Wow...I can't believe there's something XXX isn't a PITA about." But here's the thing...I guess I always thought that comment was crystal clear in meaning that. I was trying to rib the person a little...I assumed that they would understand I meant it as a rib.

Well, that was clear as mud, huh?

Wouldn't bother me at all. I guess I don't take disagreements personally- if I did I'd be divorced :rotfl: .

I just said this recently to someone, didn't mean it as an insult at all. As others have said, it's meant more as "we found something in common". Yes, it'd sound much nicer to word it that way, but not as funny!

FWIW, I'd also say the opposite. If I always agreed with someone, then there was something we disagreed on, I might comment on that, too.

Cardaway, this may be the first time we actually disagree. :teeth:

Seriously, I've said this a few times I don't consider it a backhanded compliment. Really, not a compliment at all. Just sort of like, "Hey, we're not so different after all." :wave2:

Oh, God, I hope you weren't referring to me. I recently made a comment on a thread you were on about how I was upset about having been forced onto the same side as another poster. I called him a heathen and said I'd pray for his soul. I followed up by saying I oughta re-think my position, as agreeeing with him couldn't be good.

It was meant as a joke, and I know he took it as such. We are great online pals, even though we never agree on any subject. Well, almost never, anyway. It's just a jokey thing we do. He posts something and I call him a heathen and say he's going to hell. Or I post something and he says it is nuts. We just don't take it all so very seriously.

Lots of people around here like to debate. It doesn't mean they don't like the other person, they just like to go back and forth. I've done it. It is great when you DO find something in common with someone you like, but don't usually agree with. And it is fun to point it out. That's my take, anyhow. I could be wrong.

MouseWorshipin could be one person who I could say this comment about in jest. I haven't, or at least I don't think I have, but I can see doing it. The people I can imagine really saying it about in a not so nice way would be the people who I personally don't like so much (and more than that who personally don't like me and who have made it clear that they don't like me). I suppose my point is that I don't mind disagreeing with people and it's one thing that I enjoy about the discussion boards, but when they turn into sniping boards and I don't agree with anything a nasty poster like that has said, that's when I'm tempted to make the backhanded compliment comment in "not such a nice way".

What?! You haven't always agreed with me? That's funny...I don't remember you being wrong. ;) :goodvibes

As long as you don't start praying for me! :rotfl:

I haven't noticed that you NEEDED praying for! I don't want to add to my list, my hands are quite full with Sylvester! :)

I'll admit that I did post the "I agree" thing a couple days ago. I was genuinely shocked that I agreed with this person who, IMHO, seems to delight in posting controversial viewpoints and getting a rise out of people.

Did I mean it as an insult? Nope...okay, maybe I did a little.

Feel free to pray for me, I probably could use it.

MouseWorshipin, sorry, you need to add someone to your prayin' list! :teeth:

You do realize that if you posted your opinion in the same thread the other person is probably thinking you also delight in the doing the same thing, right? :)

dis ms.,

Do you know how full my hands are? Sylvester is a total heathen, a self-proclaimed one, at that. He discovered on a ride home one day that God is really a boogeyman, and all religious people are nuts. He's completely fine with going to hell, and has planned to set up a small business selling fishing excursions with my husband! Someone quoted the Holy Bible, and he replied, "The bible says...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz." He also stated that he never enters a church with any intention other than not falling asleep.

If you can prove that you need prayers more than this man does, I'll be happy to put you first. Otherwise, I guess I need to make a list. You'll be first on my DISers Waiting For Prayers list. You'll be the first one in line I pray for after Sylvester's soul is no longer in jeopardy...but it might be a while.;) :goodvibes

MouseWorshipin, I'm pretty sure that you are female--if so, you can multi-task! :teeth:

I disagree with this; I believe that "controversial" posters usually know exactly what they are doing, and also know they are eliciting heated responses from others. This does not mean that the person who disagrees with the controversial poster is equally controversial.

Again, clear as mud...I know. But I know what I mean... :teeth:

I know exactly what you mean...and I agree. I don't think it's the first time, either. ;)
