I understand completely about your child wanting a matching cup. My oldest, who is now all of 6, has decided that if WE don't have lids and straws on our drinks HE doesn't want lids and straws on his drinks. They go through phases like that. You can do the hard line and say deal with it, or you can ride the phase out making adjustments when you are able. I choose my battles. I don't take the hard stand on something as trivial as a cup.
Many places do inventory soda fountain sales by the cup. That doesn't make it okay to cop an attitude when you request one. Explaining that the cups count as a beverage sale, even if it doesn't contain the drink, and you would therefore have to buy the cup in a polite way would be acceptable. Getting upset without explaining why and throwing the cup at you is not acceptable.
I'm glad you had a good visit overall!
