I have rented a few times and can tell you that it is nerve racking

on this end too.
Things that helped me (and should help you too) were to be very clear with the renter and get details in writing - which works good since this board is all emails and PMs. I specificed my dates and preferences. The
DVC member called and made me a ressie.
Then they called me to work out payment details, after writing the amount and pay by dates. The phone call was to confirm and make sure everything was on the up and up.
Some people will accept, personal check, money order, or PayPal (PaPal fees are paid by the renter. Make sure they have a confirmed address and you need to actually mail them the conf paper using an electronic tracking number to protect yourself against charge-backs).
Then he gave me the confirmation number. One DVC member actaully mailed me the Disney cof. sheet - which really made me feel better about everything.
All my renters required payment in full at the 30 day mark, although I have heard asking 1-nights deposit is not unheard of. A few days before I left, the DVC member emailed me to see if we were ready (he already had his payment - he was being nice).
And then he followed up a week after we got back to see if everything was good for our trip. I have a new rentee this time - hope it goes as well.
