First time I've ever regretted a trip!

I, like everyone else here, absolutely looooove trips to WDW. I always have such a wonderful time, and I have so many happy memories of my time there. I'm even a seasonal CM and make a trip at least once every 6 months so I can work! So here's my sad tale today. I applied for a new job at work, it would mean more hours, more money, and I'd qualify for healthcare. I didn't get a call to interview and was disappointed, but a few days later I was contacted by HR to say the hiring manager had been ill and they hadn't made any interview calls at all! I was so relieved and went back to hoping they'd consider me for the position. Well yesterday I got that call, and I was thrilled! So they asked me to come in for an interview next Wednesday. I have a Disney trip planned next week (leaving tomorrow) to work and told them I wouldn't be back until Friday, could they possibly do my interview at any other time, or maybe even by phone? After deliberation by the HR Department, they called back to say they were very sorry but were rescinding their interview offer. I'm so very disappointed. I've never regretted nor dreaded going to WDW in my whole life!!! And I'm so frustrated because if there hadn't been the illness, I would have gotten an interview call 2 weeks ago and none of this would have been a problem! Ugh, I am just so very frustrated and upset and just had to come on here to vent. I put in a call to HR to come in and speak to someone personally about the situation, and am awaiting a response. Cutting my trip short is not an option because that would mean calling out on my scheduled Disney shifts which would count against me on my record card (not a good thing). Just hoping for some hugs and pixie dust here, it's tough when you feel the world is unfair and there's nothing you can do about it. Thanks for listening and reading if you made it this far.

I'm so sorry. It really does seem unfair. I love that you are able to do that vacation/work thing though at WDW. How did you get to do that?

I am sorry. I dont see it as "fair" or "unfair." There are a lot of people job hunting. If someone thinks a part time job and vacation are more important, I'd just move on down the list. I would have cancelled my trip and not lost the chance for health benefits.

On one hand, it's probably for the best, since you need some flexibility to be a seasonal CM and if they can't even schedule an interview a week later, that's not very flexy.

On the other hand, I'm sure DH would have told them "I've come down with a rotten illness, I cannot guarantee I can come in next week, can we please do it the following week or have an initial phone interview?".

And then again, we're back to...if they can't handle that, they aren't going to be the easiest to work for anyway!

Considering that DH took multiple phone interviews last May from Disneyland Resort, and in fact took a job offer in the lobby of the Grand Californian (though he had had an in person interview before the vacation, there were followup phone interviews with them), phone interviews can be quite productive!

Honestly I don't know if I would want to work for a company like that! You are already employed there and they should know you and your character. A WDW vacation isn't something that you can easily cancel or rearrange. It just seems like they are being very unreasonable in this case, so who knows how they would be in the future with other issues.

I'm really surprised they wouldn't consider a phone interview and then a follow up possibly when you returned 2 days later. Its not like you would be gone for a month!

Something similar happened to me. I was working for a very large corp and had put in for a different position in my department. I was pregnant at the time with my first son and I didn't hear anything for about 2 months. Well, I am at home 1 week after having him (by c-section) and they call me to come in for an interview early the next week (10 days after birth), they didn't want to do a phone interview. I wasn't medically released to drive at that point and I had a newborn. And the managers were in my department (though not my direct supervisor), knew me well, and knew my situation. I declined their interview because there was no way I wanted to work for people who would be that inconsiderate of me, especially considering a phone interview was absolutely feasible. I did end up leaving the company about a year later thank goodness and that was by far a good move on my part!

Thanks for the hugs and pixie dust, I do appreciate them. I spoke with HR and they were very nice, but still insisted that nothing could be done. They had 334 (:scared1:) applications for the position! They narrowed it down to 8 interviews, 4 external people, and 4 internal people. They also ran into an interview issue with one of the external people who applied. She works in the mornings and they offered her a morning time for her interview, and she requested it be moved to the afternoon. Well they had already booked up the afternoon interviews so they called them and asked if someone would switch to a morning interview, and everyone declined. So now this other poor person is out of the interview process! So from 334 apps, to 8 interviewees, and now they're down to only 6. It's unreal. She did say I have glowing work reviews and manager comments from my boss, which helped me stand out in the crowd, and it will help me stand out if I apply for future positions there, which I guess is supposed to make me feel better. I firmly voiced my opinion that this situation was incredibly frustrating, especially given they delayed the interview process because someone had been ill. Not saying she should come in an interview people when she's ill, but just that it makes it seem all the more cruel that they won't budge and give me an interview a few days later. She explained to me that they want to do all the interviews in one day (and at least by the end of the same week) because they have to run background checks and need them all to come back around the same date since they take 8-10 days to clear, so that's why they couldn't interview me after I return from Disney. Makes sense, and it does help to have the process explained to me, but I'm still thinking grrrrrr to myself. The only speck of light on the situation is that she said if the interview process does not got to everyone's satisfaction, and they have to do another round of interviews, then they would of course invite me in. So thanks everyone for the good wishes, and thanks for no flames.

(Oh, and I became a Seasonal CM after spending a year working at WDW on the College Program! I know there's other ways to become a Seasonal CM though. It's a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend it! :thumbsup2)

Good luck and enjoy your trip. Things will work themselves out, I think its crummy but I dont make the rules. (Maybe they would be impossible to work for with all these narrow restrictions.)

It sounds to me like they are more concerned with their interview schedule than with finding the right person for the job!

Wow, maybe you dodged a bullet! It's shocking that they wouldn't work with you since it was someone on their end that was originally sick. Maybe this company is difficult to work with. :sad2:

They had 350 applications. There isn't any reason to wait on interviews. Nothing personal in that at all, imo. The fact that someone was ill makes no difference. There is always a time schedule, and it sounds as though the OP hasn't blown all of her hope on a better position. It sounds as though the company is rather decent about it. It stinks for the OP, but it is her choice so that she can keep a second job. Her choices affected the situation just like their did.

It seems to me that this isn't the company for you. You will end up where you are supposed to be when it is meant to be. Don't let this ruin your Disney time. I believe everything happens for a reason.

Then I thank you for your discretion. I was hoping this wouldn't turn into an angry thread, for me or anyone else. Just wanted to share my story cause I had a sad day. I'm packing for my trip now, and it's hard not to smile while doing that! I also think everything happens for a reason, so I'm doing my best to think positively. It's just hard when it's the heat of the moment and you've just had something disappointing happen.

I agree 100%!

Like the department DH is working for now. He met with the man who hired him a couple months before he was offered a (different) job in the same department. The hiring guy was just cold to him, couldn't understand why he had applied. He had SO many other applicants he barely wanted to meet with DH (but it was an internal hire thing, so he had to).

Well, the guy never did fill the position! He was so rigid in the qualifications he wanted, and NO ONE that had them was willing to work for what the job paid...after all, Microsoft is right up the highway, ya know?

Number of applicants means nothing. They wanted someone that was extremely qualified, and put up a stupid random line in the sand rule that will probably result in the person who fit their *rules* better than they fit the *job*. Makes no sense!

You all don't really think that only one person, the op was truly qualified for this job, do you? Unless she is in a very specialized field, blah, blah, blah, probably half of the people who applied are qualified. That is what the job market is like right now.

OP, enjoy your trip. Hopefully something else comes up soon. Health benefits are important, imo.

OP,

I hope you can have a nice, happy trip. I firmly believe that all things work together for good, and maybe you aren't meant to have this job right now. Perhaps something else will come along that is even better.

And personally, I think crummy job market or not, it is pretty shabby for any company to be that inflexible.

Good luck!
