First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit

I think you'll have to be more specific -- what check are you waiting for? What type of paperwork did you file?

Generally speaking, the home buyer tax credit is a credit on your income taxes. For example, if you are entitled to the $8,000 federal housing tax credit, then you figure your taxes and if you owe $8,000, then the tax credit would reduce the amount you owe to zero. If you owe $10,000, the tax credit would reduce your amount to $2,000.

My DD filed the amended forms last July also. I think she received her check about 8 weeks later. It even included interest from the date of closing. I think you should call and check on this.

Oops, sorry! We amended our 2009 tax return as well. Wow, your daughter received it back fast!! Every time I try to call the wait time is over 45 minutes and when I do finally speak to a person they say it's in the examination room and to call back in 30 days. Not very helpful to say the least.

The same with us... we did the amendmant forms in July had the $ the end of August first of September

We filed an ammendment last year around July as well and we received our check sometimes in August. Hope you get yours soon. That's a long time.

I too am still waiting! I filed an amended return in March 2010 and then got the letter in June 2010 that I was being examined. I submitted all the necessary documents and then waited like OP. Every 30 days I received a letter saying it would be another month until October 2010. I received a letter stated I was approved for the credit and would receive it in 6-8 weeks.

It February 18 - and I still do not have a check. I have been turned over to a state IRS advocate. The person who was my examiner did not properly close my case and my check never dropped. I am beyond frustrated and don't know what to do. The advocate told me that her manager has emailed the examiner to expedite my case but I have not heard the results.

I am sorry- I hope we don't have the same examiner.

Oh my, that is just terrible! I bet you're right, we have the same examiner  I think it's just awful that they are making us wait so long. I can only imagine if the tables were turned and they wanted US to pay them. I don't think we could tell them, try back in 30 days!

Still waiting on ours and we didn't file an amended return but did send additional info in hopes of someday seeing the money. We called they said they just started working on files from Aug 2010. DH is calling again Monday.
They did have the nerve to write us that we owed them $577 for 2009. More like you owe me $9000 (keep the $577). They need theirs immediately but I have to wait year on mine.
Wish I had never applied for the home owners credit!

I hope your husband has better luck than me when calling. I wouldn't call Monday though, they might be closed for President's Day. Just think when we finally get the money, it will be well worth it $$$$$$$

I submitted our amendment paperwork in Sept, and we are still waiting on it. I finally contacted the tax advocate last week. Apparently, when ours was examined, they saw that we claimed mortgage interest in 2007, which could disqualify us. However, we sold that home in 2007, meaning we had not owned a home in 3 years, meaning we qualify as first time buyers under the program. It is a really simple matter, easily cleared up by our settlement statement from that sale.

However, I'd never heard anything about any issues. Who knows when they would have finally let me know there was a problem? I faxed the docs yesterday to support our claim, and we'll see what happens now.

I don't remember ours taking more then a month. But we filed ours with our regular taxes.

Earlier this month, I received a letter from the IRS stating that since I had not showed them information which stated that I entered into a binding contract by April 30, 2010, they were disallowing my claim. Of course, I sent in the documentation AGAIN which proved that I entered into the contract on April 29, 2010. I find it funny how they didn't ask for this documentation in the last letter to me. I can't believe how long it has taken as a whole to get this money. I'm sure looking forward to it though!! :rolleyes1

I feel your pain. I kept getting letter after letter saying they need more time to examine my paperwork and twice I had to send additional backup paperwork to prove it was a legitimate claim. I was also denied because I didn't send paperwork they never asked for which was very irritating. Eventually, I got the credit, but it took several months. I think the real issue was that I was a co-owner of the home taking the full credit and they were waiting to see if the other co-owner (who filed a six month extension) was also going to claim it or not.

Same here. I filed it with my regualr taxes last April. They requested additional paperwork three times ( wrong papers) until I finally got the right information. That was in October. I sent the correct paperwork. They sent a letter saying it was received Nov 6th. I waited and then called. Got the same message of "we are working on it". The check was finally sent in late February - it actually had interest included. So don't despair - it will come. Unfortunately the IRS works on its' own timetable.

Thanks! I'm trying to stay positive. Looking forward to that interest for making me wait so long ;)

I received a letter on March 13th from the IRS stating that they received my documents and they will respond within 30 days. I called on April 15th because I had not heard from them. They asked if I could call back in 30 days because they haven't had an opportunity to re-open my case file yet. This is becoming quite amusing, don't you think? :rotfl:

That is crazy! We just filed it with our taxes this year. Mailed the paperwork on March 18, got our return on April 8th.
