First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit

we got the smaller credit as we had owned a home previously-closed on the house 30 Dec 2010- (we were eligible under the military extention).Paper filled my 2010 return on 14 march and my return deposited on 6 april.

Wow, that was fast! I wish I had just included it on my 2010 Tax return!! After we purchased the home, our realtor suggested that we amend our 2009 taxes, so that's what we did. What a big mistake!!

I know it sucks. But when it happened to us, there was a least a bright side to the situation: By the time we finally got our refund months later, we no longer wanted to spend it on what we'd earmarked the money to go toward in the first place, so we put it in savings instead.

Have you considered contacting your local Congresspeople? Explain that you have tried to work through the system, and keep getting the run around. Many offices have a person who is responsible for handling tax issues.

I received a letter on March 13th from the IRS stating that they received my documents and they will respond within 30 days. I called on April 15th because I had not heard from them. They asked if I could call back in 30 days because they haven't had an opportunity to re-open my case file yet. This is becoming quite amusing, don't you think? :rotfl:
I feel your pain. Or I should say, my DMom does. She signed the contract on her home on April 30th, and closed on her home on Sept 27th. She sent in the amended return in Oct. She is still waiting on her check. She contacted them in Dec and they told her they are backed up and haven't gotten to her case yet. She called again in February, got the same run around. Finally, last month they admitted they never even received it. We have no idea what happened to it. She just sent it in again at the beginning of the month. This time she sent it certified mail. And they have received it. So, hopefully the turnaround time won't take too long.

We got the runaround for the first time homebuyer credit on our October 2009 home purchase. It wasn't until we got a taxpayer advocate that things started moving. Still took 6 months total, but it was much easier with someone saying to us "here is everything that you need", and follow up... http://www.irs.gov/advocate/

I would like to second this advice.

OP, I really feel for you and hope this is resolved soon. There is no excuse for this long of a delay.

We purchased our home last year, and heard horror stories like this about refunds taking forever. We claimed ours on or income tax instead of going the ammendment route, sent in a copy of our contract and settlement paperwork on February 18, and our refund was deposited on March 18.

Good luck to you OP.

Wow! Sorry it is taking so long. What a pain in the neck for you.

We had also heard stories and were advised against amending our 2009 return. We waited and filed with our 2010 return in March. Our check came the day before yesterday. I was expecting it to be a few more months at least. Now I get to pick out new carpet:banana:

At work we had tax clients that got it quickly and one that got the run around for many months. We did not have to use the Advocate for that case, but I can say for a different matter (not homebuyer) the Advocate made a world of difference! You might try that before your Congressperson. This is what the Advocates are there for and they can make things happen.

Good luck!

There are so may fraudster's out there that each return must be checked manually. That is why it takes so long. And if you haven't submitted the correct paper work it takes even longer.

I know that this is not an answer you want ot hear,,but it is a fact.

You can call your congress man all you want, but the only thing it will do is speed up who ever is looking at it.....it doesn't always mean you will get what you want.
