We are going to Hilton Head for 5 nights from 16th May and would like to know where we can just get a relaxing drink in the evening .....also I have seen the Ocean grill at the mariner and Salty dogs mentioned as places to eat...can you walk to these restaurants or will we need a taxi.
Thanks

There are several spots within walking distance from the resort - Scott's Fishmarket has an outside bar with entertainment many evenings, The Kingfisher also has a bar and entertainment and San Miguel's offers the same. All three also have a full dinner menu. The Ocean Grille is also walkable, but mainly for dining. Alexanders is about 3/4 mile on the way to the beachhouse. Red Fish is a 10 minute drive and there are many other great dining spots on the island (HH has about 300 restaurants).

The Salty Dog is at South Beach and will require transportation. You might want to consider a rental car to get around HH since transportation is needed for most areas on the island. There are about 6 restaurants within 400 yards of the resort, there is a mall just a little farther, a grocery store (Piggly Wiggly) within 1/2 mile, Guiseppis Pizza, Fudruckers (hamburgers) less than 1/2 mile. There are also historical sites, museums, art galleries and outlet malls nearby, but none of those are within a comfortable walk. The resort is located about mid-island.

Have a great trip! :)

Just wanted to add that all of the restaurants listed in the second paragraph from Doc are very do-able on a bike, except for the Salty Dog. We ride bikes over to that shopping center/mall all the time, even pick up a few groceries, or go for an ice cream most afternoons. There is a wonderful bike path. Hope you have a great trip!

The Salty Dog would be a hike -it is almost at the far end of the island. If you do go, go early. The line can be hours long. Food is just ok. There is another restaurant owned by them call The Shipwreck, or something like that. If you don't go for dinner, at least get a shake in the ice cream shop below the Tshirt shop. They were terrific.

If you want something a little more upscale, The Westin up in Port Royal has a terrific Sunday Seafood buffet. It is expensive but it was really nice and the service was terrific. The hotel was nice to walk around. You would also need a car to get there.

I have to say, I can not imagine going to HHI without having a car. Things are just too far apart and there is no public transportation. Just getting to HHI from the airport is a long ways.

We were very unimpressed by the Salty Dog. Lots of hype for a fairly run down fried fish place, imo. My ds (13yo) who is obsessed with fried seafood enjoyed it, though, if that tells you anything.

We mostly ate in our villa at HH, and I'd recommend preparing your own drinks for at the resort. We had quite a nice pitcher of sangria in our fridge for the week. I'm not sure what the hours of the resort shop/snack stand would be in May, but in October they weren't open after 6pm.

My food recommendation is Marley's Island Grill, which is just before the Sea Pines entrance. Very delicious food with a very interesting menu. Sort of a seafood trip around the world. You would need a car or a taxi to get there. We also liked the pizza from Guiseppi's.

Have fun in HH! Over dinner this evening my family just decided that we'll be going there instead of WDW next year.

I can't imagine doing HH without a car, even if one were flying in to HH directly.

As far as restaurants - some of our favorites are Old Oyster Factory (strange we didn't like it our first trip, but really have enjoyed it a lot the last two times), Salty Dog, Wreck of Salty Dog (more upscale version of Salty Dog), Crazy Crab, San Miguels, Scotts and Stacks for breakfast. For some reason we didn't really care for Signe's.

In Savannah, we like Paula Deen's restaurant, the boarding house (can't remember name right now, but it is country food served family style) and the Shrimp Factory.

DW and myself are going to try something new for our upcoming June trip. We plan on cooking more meals at the resort. We will have a 1BR this trip. I always enjoy cooking breakfast when at the beach. Then we'll just make sandwiches to take over to the beach for lunch. One night we plan on cooking shrimp. There is a good seafood market on the left as you head down the road towards the bridge. One other night I might try cooking out some steaks on one of the grills. Other than that I figure San Miguels, Salty Dog and probably Oyster Factory.

We are doing something different this trip. We're driving down on Saturday and staying at the Hampton Inn at Sun City on Saturday. Then I figure we'll drive over to Savannah Saturday evening and have dinner at Paula Deens or the Shrimp Factory. Then check in early at our resort on Sunday morning. I told DW even if our unit isn't ready we can still drive over the beach house and spend the day on the beach. I'm really looking forward to this trip.

WolfpackFan we stop at that same seafood stand each trip. Great shrimp! Also check out the homemade pies! We boil our shrimp and then wrap a little piece of bacon around some of the shrimp and stick a toothpick through it and stick it under the broiler til the bacon is crisp. Yummy! That and a salad and some fresh corn on the cob and we are happy! We haven't used the grills, but just might this year. Hope you have a great trip!

Oh the shrimp!! We take our little Cuisinart rice steamer with us and throw in some Old Bay. That little thing does a great job! We usually cook most of our meals in our room. We throw in the Forman. We have a small rubbermaid tote that we pack with seasonings also. We usually eat out twice. We just don't want to take the time to drive, wait for a table, wait for our food, wait for our check and then drive back to the resort. We would rather eat quick and easy and head back to the pool or beach. That's why we are there!;)

Also good food walking from resort HHI Diner good $. Crazy crab on main road not in Sea Pines. Hudson was just ok for me. Oyster factory is much better. Sidneys is a great brekfast place.

What and where is Sidneys?

I have a feeling they mean Signe's. Great bakery / breakfast spot. They have wonderful pound cakes (key lime and thunder & lightning are the two favorite here).

Thanks guys......we do have a car as we are playing golf in Myrtle beach for 8 days then our wives fly out and we meet up at Charlotte for a 10 day trip staying in a log cabin in the smokies and then driving down to Hilton Head for our last 5 days .....I just wondered if there were anywhere to eat and drink within walking distance..... and once again you have come up trumps with the answer:banana:
Thanks
