We're planning on Tent Camping at FW over Thanksgiving this year (if I can get a reservation! The site isn't popping anything up so we may settle for the week before) and I have to admit I'm curious!

I've done a bit of searching here, but there are still some questions left unanswered:

If you're in a tent, can you bring a pet and be in a pet loop? We have a cat (leash trained :rotfl: ) that we'd love to bring with us if it was allowed. She's gone camping with us before and been very good.

Can you drive to your site? I had read someone that cars are not allowed on property, and that makes me nervous... we'll have a minivan full (we'll be there over a week or so)

Is the bus/tram system hard to figure out? On the allears.net site, it seems so confusing to me!

Are there any must-do tips you have for me? I don't want to forget anything!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Camping Disboard!

Sorry, in a tent you aren't allowed pets. Not in pop-ups, either, I think. You could probably kennel your cat and take it to the tent for visits.

Yes, you can drive directly to your site and park there. You can drive around the campground and there are a very few parking spaces at the Meadow's Trading Post. There just aren't any other parking areas, so you can't park at the pools or Settlement area or Marina or Pioneer Hall area. You can park up front at the Outpost area and catch the bus there if you desire.

No, the internal buses aren't that difficult to understand once you are there. At each busstop there is a map that tells you how to get where you want to go. You will also be given literature upon check-in that explains it all.

Check out some of the FW sites to see what you may need to camp with. My best advice: allow enough time to enjoy all that the fort has to offer, and of course check back here often and join in on our fun!

I thought you could pitch your tent on any loop, it's just that 1500 and 2000 are specifically designed for tent camping. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct, tent campers can reserve any loop but 1500 and 2000 are designed for tents and pop-ups, so TT's and MH's should not be in those loops.

My daughter and I rode thru the tent/pop up loop Friday and it was very cool. We always stay on 900 if we can and I never knew you could cut thru to the Meadows there. No wonder I saw a lot of foot traffic. We also rode into the group camp area. There were some cm's setting up some tents a group had rented and fixing to occupy. We always go at Thanksgiving weekend and I saw some teepee's there once. The cm told me that a group of re-enactment people come there every year and they welcome people to come visit. He said like 30 years they were doing this. I hope to see it up close now that I know what it is. Anyway, if you tent or pop up camp you should ride by the 1500? loop. I saw some neat ideas people have come up with to make their site comfortable.

I forgot to mention teardrops, truck campers and van campers are okay for 1500 and 2000 loops too.

OK, just been reading around and I think, from what I've read, you can have your tent in the pet loop, but you can't leave Molly on her own. If you go out to the parks you'd have to put her into the kennels and come back a couple of times to walk her. You also aren't allowed to have her wandering around by herself, she has to be tethered, on a leash or shut into the tent (as long as you have a sown in ground sheet, so she can't just duck under the canvas).

As I said, this is just what I've read, so I can't guarantee that it's right, I'm sure someone will correct me if it's wrong. Hope this helps and happy camping :thumbsup2 !

That's right Spark about the Pets.
