We made our first DVC trip to SSR last week, and wanted to give a first time DVC'ers review of SSR.

We stayed in a first floor 2 bedroom unit, which was great for our family of 4 (we have a 15 year old and a 4 old). We loved the 2 bath rooms, and seperate bedrooms.

Buying into DVC SSR site unseen... the resort was much better than we had anticipated. We loved the location near DTD. It is a short walk to DTD (10-15 minutes with a 4 year old in tow), which gave us the ability to have access to a wide range of meals. We liked the 2 bedroom layout and decore.

Some items that we did not like or were surprized to find...

The bath room fans are annoying, since they are motion activated. Both of the toilets in our unit leaked (between the bowl and tank) when flushed, but maintanence did fix them within a day. A number of drawers in the dressers were stuck from the wood stain drying. I had to really tug on them to break them free, and one drawer was not correctly installed. I hated the sleeper sofa, since when you sat in it the seat cushions sank below the front frame edge. This made it uncomfortable on the back of ones legs. None of master bedroom lights would turn-on, and the alarm clock was not working either. I managed to track the problem down to a GFI that needed to be reset, which was located behind the end table next to the King size bed.

One thing that we will bring on our next stay is a step stool for our 4 year old. Since she could not reach the sinks in the bathrooms to brush her teeth, or wash her hands.

We agree the swimming pools will become crowded once the other buildings open.

Over all we loved SSR, but DVC needs to make sure all the rooms are ready for use before letting members stay in them. The leaking toilets and stuck dresser drawers were annoying problems that could have been prevented.

"toilets in our unit leaked (between the bowel and tank)"

Wow! Maintenance is pretty good to fix this leak! LOL

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Thanks for the report! I can't wait for my first trip home!

Thanks for the info. We make our first trip as DVC'ers in just about a month, to SSR.

We also bought sight unseen and are very excited to see our new home.

Agreed! :D

>The bath room fans are annoying, since they are motion activated.

Yep

Yikes! Glad they took care of it quickly. We did not experience that problem.

Hmm. Sounds like no one tested out this particular room before letting paying guests stay in it. Hopefully you let someone at the resort know about it so they can fix it.

>I hated the sleeper sofa, since when you sat in it the seat cushions sank below the front frame edge. This made it uncomfortable on the back of ones legs.

How odd. We did not notice this at all...and found the sofa very comfortable.

>None of master bedroom lights would turn-on, and the alarm clock was not working either. I managed to track the problem down to a GFI that needed to be reset, which was located behind the end table next to the King size bed.

Well, I suppose this could happen anywhere, but it seems that housekeeping would have noticed and had it taken care of before you arrived!

Yep! Even though we drive, I can't imagine hauling a step stool with us. Turn the laundry basket upside down and have her use that. Worked for us.

>We agree the swimming pools will become crowded once the other buildings open.

We'll see! :)

Agreed.

the maids only seem to speak spanish - the job doesn't pay enough for english speaking people to want it.

So the maids will NOT report anything to maintence/engineering.

If something is wrong in your room - you need to report it.

great job reporting the leak!!!!

I would call maintence for the other problems you were having.

If maintence doesn't know something is wrong - they can't fix it.

Now that SSR is open - I don't think that any of the new rooms will be tested - that is just for a new resort opening they bring in other cast members and test to make sure everything is working properly.

SSR is opened now so don't expect DVC to test it anymore.

Please call maintence for any and all problems. No matter how small - a small problem will become big over time.

You won't have a top DVC resort if you don't.

Hope besides the problems your stay was GREAT!!!

Thanks for the report Dis-n-Pix! Sounds like all the problems were pretty minor and fixable. Hopefully everything will get ironed out as time goes on. Welcome back!

Thanks for the report. It is great to read all of the opinions. We visited the property in June and will be staying there in December!

The only problem we reported to maintenance was the leaking toilets. We did not notice the leak until my wife saw a pool of water next the wall, and actually saw it leaking when she flushed it for my daughter (the power flush of these toilets scared my 4 year old daughter). We tested the other toilet, and it also leaked when flushed. Since we noticed the leak late at night, we did not report it until the next morning.

As to the tripped GFI in the master bedroom, we also did not notice this until we needed lights later that evening. So house keeping probably would have not noticed this, unless someone had tried the lights.

We would have reported all the problems if we could not have fixed them. All but the the leaking toilets were easily fixed, well the tripped GFI did take a few minutes to discover.

I was thinking that the outlets in the master BR would not have worked (along with the lights) and housekeeping would need to use them for the vacuum, etc. Anyway...reseting a GFI outlet is no big deal...though they always seem to be in an out of the way spot. :D

I would report the drawer that was installed incorrectly...so that it can be fixed for the next guest.

We stayed in SSR last week (Room 1103- one bedroom) and the couch in the living room drove me crazy! Not enough support to make one comfortable, but using it as a bed was fine. I thought the bed pillows were overly firm, but that's my personal taste.

Our lights did not work either, but we figured that one out. No other maintenance issues other than that.

We had a problem with the electricity too. First, one bulb blew out over the vanity, then the other light and the overhead light went out. Maintenance fixed it.

With three of us having a problem, it looks like this may be something that needs to be looked into.

A very good lesson here: whenever there appears to be a "dead" outlet or light, check for the GFI outlet and reset it. In some hotels - like in our current apartment - it isn't always obvious that an outlet is part of a GFI circuit.
