First time drivers insurance?

OP: Did you get a quote from your agent about adding yourself as an occasional driver?

Ok, so I'm back to give an update.

After some more little mini-crises to deal with(the year has been full of them) we got the quote and our insurance will be going DOWN:cool1: First time driver doesn't matter. We'll be insured as the married couple that we are and save some bucks.

I tested for and PASSED the permit test late last week, no thanks to the state of VA. I was actually ready to test a couple of weeks ago but the DMV computers were down for over a week, so had to wait till that cleared up. But I am learning my way around the vehicle once again. So far so good. Gotta get the parking thing down though. Have to have the permit for 30 days before I can test for the license so it'll be mid-Oct. before we do that. Can't wait to see how that goes.

TY to everybody for the advice/info.

Great. I didn't think it would go up. Glad you passed the test and are set to drive.

We just added a brand-new teenaged driver to our insurance, and it did double.

Before, we were paying insurance on two adult drivers with clean records and our homeowners insurance . . . and adding the teenager doubled the bill. So she costs as much as two adults and a house.

Even though I knew it was coming, it was a shocker.

Of course, your specifics will vary based upon the decisions you make: Are you going to carry collision or just liability? What kind of deductible are you going to choose? Are you going to add small options like towing insurance and rental car coverage? Your premium will be vastly different based upon those things.

The coverage is staying exactly the same. We are simply adding my name to The policy once I get the license. Dh's agent says the coverage will go down, which is exactly what we needed to hear.

BTW, my actual permit came today. I have been learning with a paper permit for the past few days. OMG is this thing ugly. My photo is already on it. Twice:rolleyes:

I had State Farm for 16 years. I switched to a 6 month Geico this year which I really don't care for but my old agent retired. :( I didn't care for the new office much.

State Farm is very good at adding multi car discounts multi line if you have home or renters lines too. I know they have a safe driver's course(did that when I first got added on) but it may be limited to 21 and under. :confused3 You could ask. I had priced many many times but nobody was ever able to be my State Farm rate.

Some might not even realize you are first time driver. It really depends on your agent and how far they go to keep you at the lowest rate. My old agent was awesome. He was a sweetheart too. He handed out his home number for clients and didn't mind if they called in the middle of the night after an accident. He was awesome.

ur policy pricing might go down based on the operator to vehicle ratio..
if you add another car it will go up.
either way its great news :)
good luck!

Glad to hear you are getting your license. Even if you do not drive a lot I definitely think you need to be able to drive. When my grandfather died my grandmother learned how to drive at age 77. It was either that, or she had to move out of her home to a facility where they would drive her around. I think being able to drive a car and swim are two things everyone should know how to do.

Wait -- you said the coverage will stay the same AND you said it'll go down. Do you mean the coverage or the premium?

I think you mean that the cost of your insurance will stay the same while you have your permit, and the amount of coverage you have will remain constant. But beyond that, I don't get it. It's definitely going to go up when you're added as a full-fledged driver. They won't insure two independent drivers for the cost of one.

I meant the premium. I was answering you above when you were outlining the variables. We have full coverage on the car and will be keeping it. But the premium goes down once I'm licensed. Only have the 1 car, so can't afford to do anything less than full. Even once I'm licensed it'll be a year bare minimum before we can afford a second and I'm thinking it'll be closer to 2 really. Unless next year goes extremely well for us. But I'm not counting on it.

The quote is in. We'll be insured for LESS than what we pay now. Benefit of being married. I'll take it. Whenever we get a second car it will go up. But that's down the road. I mix up my coverage and premiums sometimes being new at this bit. But I'll get it down. Same as driving.
