First Time Dining Report - 10 days of Deluxe Dining!

The next day, after an early morning at the Animal Kingdom we had lunch at:

Yak & Yeti

Some pictures of the menu:

My dad ordered a drink called a Glacier Water (I think…:confused3) and I got a mango iced tea:

IMG_0372.jpg

I decided to start with the:

IMG_0373.jpg

IMG_0374.jpg

Wok-fried Green Beans
Battered green beans, sweet Thai chili dipping sauce $8.49

I tried these the last time I went to Yak & Yeti and couldn’t not order them. I have been thinking about them since then and they were as good as I remember. The green beans are well coated with batter/crumbs and fried until they are really crispy. They don’t taste especially green bean-y, but they still were delicious with the sweet chili sauce. The sweet chili sauce was really good as well, and seemed like it could be homemade (or at least store bought with some fresh additions) with pieces chopped garlic. The waiter also brought out a bottle of Sriracha (which I am in love with ) that also went perfectly with the green beans and sweet chili sauce.

My dad decided to order the:

IMG_0376.jpg

Seared Ahi Tuna
Chilled, sesame-encrusted ahi tuna, wasabi aioli, & sweet chili slaw $11.99

He was looking to get something lighter as his appetizer for the day’s lunch, so he decided on the seared tuna. There were 6 slices of tuna over a veggie slaw, which was accompanied by wasabi and soy-based sauces. The tuna was well prepared and tasty, but nothing really special or extraordinary. My dad and I weren’t the biggest fan of the slaw – we felt that there wasn’t enough dressing and it was a lot of raw bell peppers (that my dad doesn’t like).

For my entrée I decided to get the:

IMG_0378.jpg

Malaysian Seafood Curry
Mahi Mahi, scallops, little neck clams, mussels, shrimp, zucchini, roma tomatoes, red curry coconut broth, jasmine rice $22.99

I wanted to get something a bit different, and not really offered at any of the other restaurants we were going to, so I decided to get the curry. I have liked most curries I have tried (Japanese, Thai green and yellow), but haven’t really had many red curries so I ordered this (I also like seafood). The waiter mentioned that this curry was a bit spicy, but I didn’t think so. While it was very flavorful, it wasn’t very spicy, which my dad, who has a lower spicy tolerance than I do, agreed with. The dish had way too much rice, 2 big scoops stacked on top of each other in the center of the dish, that I ate around. It was well cooked, I just had too much to eat already. The seafood was well cooked, and there was plenty of Mahi Mahi, but not many scallops. The dish was topped off with some sprigs of cilantro, which I tore apart and mixed into the curry. I’m weird and really like cilantro – I could eat leaves of it plain.

My dad decided to try something a bit different and got the:

IMG_0379.jpg

IMG_0380.jpg

Duck with Anandapur Glaze
Roasted half duckling, orange wasabi glaze, jasmine ice, stir-fried vegetables $23.99

We don’t eat a lot of duck at home (if any) so that what my dad decided to eat. We both agreed that the glaze on the duck was really delicious, and were happy that there was a little dish of it on the side. It tasted like orange marmalade with some wasabi added, but it wasn’t too strong. The duck was pretty dry (especially the breast portion) – I’m pretty sure the duck was overcooked, but the glaze still made it taste pretty good. My dad wasn't a big fan of the rice or the veggies. The veggies were pretty bland, and my dad likes sticky white rice, which is what we eat at home (my mom is Korean).

Of all the dessert options, the most appealing to me was the:

IMG_0384.jpg

IMG_0386.jpg

Mango Pie
Shortbread cookie crust, fresh whipped cream, raspberry sauce $6.99

This was delicious. The dessert reminded me of the lemon tart they have at La Madeline, in that it tasted like it was made with condensed milk. The pie was cool and creamy, with a sweet, but not too sweet, mango taste. The crust was okay, but I’m never really a fan of any piecrust so I avoided eating most of it. On the side there was some chopped up mangoes and strawberries that were fresh and tasted good with the pie (and my dad’s ice cream). Along with the raspberry sauce there was a mango sauce, both of which I enjoyed. All in all, this dessert definitely exceeded my expectations. This is a dessert I would definitely order again or make myself.

My dad decided to get the dessert that the restaurant is most known for, the:

IMG_0387.jpg

Fried Wontons
Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, honey vanilla-drizzle $7.99

My dad enjoyed this dessert, but not nearly as much as he liked my pie. His biggest complaint was that there wasn’t enough of the sauce on the plate – it really was just a drizzle. The wontons themselves seemed to be filled only with unsweetened cream cheese, which I liked, but it didn’t really taste very dessert-y cause it wasn’t that sweet. On the skewers there was also pineapple that was warm, and I like my pineapple cold, but it didn’t bother my dad.

The meal ended with a few fortune cookies, and a pretty obvious fortune (at least for that day :sunny:):

IMG_0389.jpg

Overall I would say that this meal was a good choice for dining inside of the park, but it isn’t one of our favorites. We used a total of 2 dining credits and the meal would have been $95 (not including tip) if we had paid out of pocket.

I loved your review of Flying Fish! Very descriptive and great pics. That PB&B crème brûlée looks amazing!

Looking forward to more reviews. :)

Thanks! I just got a new point and shoot and was hoping the pictures would come out. Some are definitely better that others! :p

I'm in! Looking forward to hearing about Fulton's!

Fulton's had to be one of my favorites - I just love seafood!

Sounds like you had a great trip! Great review and pics. Can't wait to read more. Esp. looking forward to Yak & Yeti as that will be new for us in November.

popcorn::

We did have a great trip, tiring, but still wonderful. :rotfl: Hope my review is informative!

I had the sushi and scallops at Flying Fish a few weeks ago and both were wonderful! The risotto I didn't care for much but I've just decided that I don't care for risotto regardless of where I get it!

I was debating between the PB&J creme brulee and the boardwork trio and ended up getting the latter. Glad you enjoyed the creme brulee!

I was wanting the trio too, and I kind of wish that I got it as well. But I didn't think I really needed 2 desserts, or did I... ;)

Great start". Flying Fish is a favorite of mine. Those scallops look delicious, and so does your dad's pork dish.

Looking forward to reading more!:hippie:

I love scallops, and these were definitely some of the best I've ever had!

Thank you for the menu shots! The Signature menus change seasonally and the web sites often do not have the complete or current menus. I am looking hard at a trip next May, so I really want to get a good sense of what each Signature serves at this particular time of year!

I tried my best to get menu shots, but I forgot to a lot of the time :headache: Hopefully I have a few that you were wanting to look at!

Great start - can't wait for more.

:thanks:

Great start! Your whole dining lineup looks amazing! I have never been to Flying Fish, but your review and pictures have me really wanting to try it. Can't wait to read more of your reviews! :thumbsup2

Flying Fish would have to be one of my favorite signatures and I would definitely recommend!

Loving your reviews and awesome photos! I had the scallop and pea risotto dish a few Springs ago and the one thing that stood out then was the peas being undercooked...looks like the same Chef is making the risotto :lmao:

:rotfl: Maybe they were just extra al dente!

Great reviews! I don't eat seafood, but your scallops pictures have me wishing I did!!

I would definitely recommending trying scallops if you want to venture into seafood. Fresh and well prepared scallops are amazing :cloud9:

Enjoying your wonderful reviews!! My family and I are going in September and Yak & Yeti is one of our favorites. Fantastic pictures!!! :goodvibes :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

You are creating a GREAT food review! I am so enjoying it! Your photos are FANTASTIC!! Can't wait for more!! Thx!:wizard:

You have a wonderful dining review thus far. Whatever new point & shoot camera you are using - you know what you are doing! You pictures are lovely! We are staying at BW Villas this summer and FF is right there so your review has me thinking..... can I fit one more meal in??

Thanks for sharing and congrats on your graduation!:thumbsup2

Loving the reviews so far. It's making me hungry and wishing I was there now!! LOL!

Can't wait to read more!

I'm in! Your ADRs look great! I can't wait to read more! I stayed at CSR for the first time in March and loved it! Congrats on your upcoming graduation! :)

Enjoying your report and you gotta love a Longhorn. DS is at UT Tyler.

Can't wait to read the rest of it. Thanks for sharing with us!

I love your commentary on the food! If you're weird, then I'm weird too, as I could happily eat raw sprigs of cilantro (as well as mint and parsley), and I usually don't finish pie crust because I never like it that much. :lmao:

I need to follow along since we'll be doing the DxDP for the first time on our Oct. trip and we have a lot of the same ADR's.

Flying Fish will be our first night dinner. I have seen that sushi app in so many reports and I drool every time. It looks so good!!

Another fabulous food review that has me really looking forward to Yak and Yeti in November!

Can you tell me what the jasmine rice tastes like? I've never had it and for some unexplained reason, I'm leery of it. The seafood curry is high on my short listof what I might have when we eat there. So glad you enjoyed it. (I love cilantro, too!). Was the Glacier Water an alcoholic drink? It sure looks tasty.

One last question (sorry!)... Did you find it to be very cold inside Yak and Yeti? I was reading reviews of it on All Ears and a few people said it was too cold in there. I don't think it's ever too cold, but wondered if I should make sure DD13 has her hoodie, so I don't have to hear her complain.;)

What an excellent report so far! Keep up the great work!

Fabulous reviews so far! I can't wait to read the rest!

Thanks everyone for reading my report (and some of y'all actually like it :woohoo:). I love going through all the meals we had - it makes me want to plan our next trip, but I have no idea when that'll be :sad1:

It's a Canon Elph 300 HS and I really like it. It's been really easy to use and I like the pictures it takes. It didn't hurt that it is one of the cheaper cameras on the market too.

And there's always room to fit one more meal in! ;)

Enjoying your report and you gotta love a Longhorn. DS is at UT Tyler.

Can't wait to read the rest of it. Thanks for sharing with us!

Thanks! I don't think I've ever met anyone else who could just eat sprigs of cilantro like I do. It's nice knowing that I'm not alone in the world

No worries - I like answering questions when I can (it makes me feel useful ) To me, jasmine rice just tastes like plain white rice - the grains are kind of long. It might be a bit more flavorful than regular rice, but I couldn't really tell :confused3 The Glacier Water was non-alcoholic. I'm pretty sure it was just Sprite with blue coconut syrup added. We were able to get this as a drink on the dining plan, but there weren't free refills. And lastly, I didn't find the restaurant to be very cold - but I would prefer it to be cold over hot any day. We were seated by a window at the front side of the restaurant, and we could have been lucky that that spot isn't very chilly. Other sections of the restaurant (like tables more in the interior) could be colder I suppose.

Great reviews. Really enjoying them. We are going to WDW and doing DxDP in July, so your reviews are coming in very handy. We are doing Y&Y and Flying Fish too.

FYI - I live in Austin and I am a UT graduate. Love those Horns!!:cool2:

And we had some of the same restaurants on different evenings. We also enjoyed California Grill, Yachtsman Steakhouse, and Narcoossee's. One restaurant that I detested was Fulton's! The review is on here somewhere. Anyhow, I am dying to hear more of your impressions. Keep posting!

Yes, your pictures are just gorgeous! MUCH nicer than most of the ones I see here (not trying to be mean to others, just pointing out that yours are especially good! :teeth: ).

I am subscribing! Can't wait for the next report - our trip is coming up in September and I am SO ready to go right now....... :goodvibes

After spending the afternoon and early evening at the Animal Kingdom, we hopped on a bus to the AKL to eat at:

IMG_0565.jpg

Jiko!

We split a bottle of Pellegrino to drink, but I failed to take a picture (it’s just water, right? ;))

For my appetizer, I ended up deciding to get the:

IMG_0567.jpg

IMG_0568.jpg

Roasted Beet Salad
Blackberry-Shiraz Vinaigrette, Pistachio-crusted Goat Cheese, and Serrano Ham $14.00

I wanted to start the meal off a bit lighter (I also debated getting the “bobotie” roll) so I chose this salad. I like beets, and this salad was made up of pickled, boiled, and roasted beets (so the waiter told me). I believe the golden beets were roasted, the striped/candy cane beets were pickled, and the regular beets were boiled. I wasn’t a big fan of the pickled beets because they were hard (I like my beets a little softer) and not very pickle-y (I wouldn’t have known they were pickled if I wasn’t told). The other beets were better, with the sliced golden beets being my favorite. I liked the dressing on the frisée, but would have liked the addition of some fresh blackberries to the salad. The goat cheese went along well with the salad, but the pistachio crust was minimal. The pistachios were so finely ground that it was hard to tell that’s what it was. Overall this was a solid salad, but nothing particularly stood out to make it special.

My dad ordered the:

IMG_0566.jpg

IMG_0569.jpg

Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin
Mealie Pap, Chakalaka, White Truffle Oil, and Micro Cilantro $16.00

While we were making our reservations, my dad had been looking at the online menus for the places we were going to be eating at. He saw that Jiko offered wild boar, which he had never had, so he already knew what he was going to get (if they were still serving it, and they were :thumbsup2). My dad’s first reaction when he got the dish was “that’s a little piece of meat…and a lot of tomatoes and onions.” The dish was mostly composed of chakalaka, the onion and tomato mixture, but man was it tasty. This type of thing is definitely not what my dad normally likes, but he loved it and ate every bit of the dish. I tried the dish as well, and I’m amazed at how they got tomatoes and onions to taste so good! The boar was just a few small slices, but that was enough food with him getting an entrée and dessert too. I don’t remember much about the meat, I let my dad eat most of it, but I remembering it being not as gamey as I thought it would be. This was an interesting and different appetizer, and a perfect choice for my dad.

For my entrée I decided to get the:

IMG_0570.jpg

IMG_0571.jpg

Braised Beef Short Rib
Butter-whipped Potatoes, Pearl Onions, Baby Carrots, and Cabernet-Blood Orange Sauce $41.00

This was one entrée that I had seen reviewed on the boards, and I knew I had to have it. I’m so glad I did! :cloud9: The meat was super super tender, and the sauce was rich and complemented the meat and potatoes so well. There was some fat on the meat, but it was only a little bit and I expected with short ribs. The mashed potatoes were smooth, creamy, and buttery perfection. The pearl onions were soft, sweet, and were a good accompaniment to the meat. The one thing I didn’t like were the carrots. They were barely cooked, so they had the taste of cooked carrots, but a hard, uncooked texture, which through me off (I like raw carrots or tender cooked carrots).

My dad decided he wanted fish and got the:

IMG_0572.jpg

IMG_0574.jpg

Coffee-rubbed Black Grouper
Celery Root Purée, Pinotage-Butter Sauce, and Mushroom-Leek Fondue $37.00

My dad was worried that the fish may have an overwhelming coffee flavor, but with the waiter’s reassurance that it wasn’t, he ordered it. The grouper was a firm, meaty, white fish that stood up well to the coffee crust. It was definitely a pronounced coffee taste (you’d probably have to be a coffee fan to enjoy it :coffee:), but went surprising well with the fish. My dad and I had mixed opinions on the celery root purée. I thought it tasted odd (either the root itself or the spices used), but my dad thought it was tasty. Also on the plate was a mushroom and leek fondue, which was good other than some stringy and though pieces of leek.

I wasn’t really feeling something sweet to end my meal, so I decided to get the:

IMG_0577.jpg

IMG_0578.jpg

IMG_0581.jpg

Artisanal Cheese Selection
Five tasting portions with accompaniments from around the world $14.00

I love cheese! So, this was the perfect ending for me. The accompaniments included (from left to right) were a blueberry jam/compote, fig cake, pear jelly, date, and toast. I also had some honey (that came with our tea) that went well with some of the cheeses as well. My favorites were the MT TAM (soo creamy ) and Valdeón (blue cheese is one of my favorites). There was enough cheese for my dad to try each one, which was nice as well.

My dad decided to get the dessert that most appealed to him, the:

IMG_0579.jpg

Lime-scented Crème Brûleé
Key Lime-Mango Chutney and Vanilla Meringue Cookie $9.00

My dad liked this dessert, but it wasn’t his favorite (he wouldn’t order it again if he had the chance). The lime flavor came from lime zest, so there wasn’t any of the tart flavor of lime in the crème brûleé (which saddened me), but maybe that’s what lime scented means. Other than the lime flavor there wasn’t much else to the crème brûleé. There was a tiny bit a fruit on the top that was good as well as a meringue that I ate cause my dad’s not a big fan of egg whites and sugar, but I am so it was a win-win situation.

With our desserts we also split a pot of Nobo Whole Fruit Tea:

IMG_0575.jpg

There was enough for about 2.5/3 cups of tea, so it was perfect for us to share. It also was our second drink on the dxdp, so a great value as well. The tea was a bit too tart/acidic for me, but my dad enjoyed it.

Overall I would say that this meal was really good, and our biggest disappointment would have to have been the crème brûleé . We used a total of 4 dining credits (2 each) and the meal would have been $153 (not including tip) if we had paid out of pocket.
