First Time Dining Report - 10 days of Deluxe Dining!

Just found your reviews. Got to agree that the duckling at Y&Y was overcooked. You could tell just by looking at it. I am going to order that when we dine there in August though so I hope they don't overcook it then.

Can't wait to read more about your dining experiences.

Great reviews and how cool that you and your Dad went on a trip, just the two of you :)

Your reviews are excellent, I've just caught up on them all :)
You really do add a lot of detail and it's wonderful to read along
Looking forward to reading more

Sorry I haven’t updated my report in forever! I have all intentions to finish it, but summer laziness has definitely taken over my life these past few weeks. Again I’m sorry  and I hope y’all will bear with me as I continue on.

After a quick break in the room we headed to my favorite Disney restaurant:

California Grill!

We split a bottle of Pellegrino to drink, but yet again I failed to take a picture (it’s water. with bubbles :rolleyes1) Along with our drinks, a bread basket was brought out:

IMG_0687.jpg

It was a nice sourdough bread with a yummy salted butter, but it wasn’t anything special.

For my appetizer, I went with what my sister ordered the last time we were here:

Spicy Kazan Roll
Crab, Shrimp, Bay Scallops, Tuna, Fireball Sauce $22.00

It was as good as I remembered! There were 8 pieces, so this was a substantial appetizer, but I had no problem finishing it. The seafood was fresh and the sauce had a good kick. I especially loved the scallops and crab in the sauce, and there was a ton of it. The tempura crunch on top and the masago on the outside gave a great textural contrast to the rest of the roll, which was pretty much just soft. The cucumber salad was tasty and the pickled ginger was just pickled ginger, but I ate it cause I’m one of the few people I know who actually likes it. No soy sauce or wasab was given with the roll, but I thought it was needed (you’d have to ask for it if you wanted). I love sushi and this roll is one of my favorites ever :cloud9:. One of my favorite appetizers of the whole trip!

My dad ordered the:

Medusa Roll
Crispy Soft Shell Crab with Asparagus, Spicy Mayonnaise, and Yuzu Pepper Sauce $26.00

My dad wanted a roll for his appetizer as well, so he asked our waiter for his recommendation. Our waiter let us know that it was the perfect time for soft shell crabs, so they had incorporated them into their menu, including a sushi roll. My dad and I haven’t eaten much soft shell crab, so my dad decided to try this roll. Inside the roll there was thin strips of asparagus and plenty of crab. The fried crab had a nice crunch that went well with the soft rice of the roll. The two sauces on the plate (I believe the spicy mayonnaise and sweet soy sauce) went really well with the roll, but I didn’t think the sauce on the side (yuzu pepper?) was needed. This roll was tasty, and a great sushi option for those who may not be comfortable eating sushi with raw proteins.

For my entrée I decided to get another early summer specialty:

IMG_0694.jpg

Florida Soft Shell Crab
Peruvian Purple Corn Pudding, Florida Heirloom Tomato Vinaigrette, Local Peaches $40.00

Our server recommended this, so I decided to order it. The corn pudding was topped with 2 whole fried soft shell crabs. The crabs were coated in a nontraditional breading (possibly including cornmeal? other grains?). While this was a good entrée, it just wasn’t for my tastes. After eating about half of the crab, it just got a bit monotonous; it was just too much of the same thing (I also think that I’m not the biggest fan of soft shelled crab). The corn pudding was a beautiful purple color, but wasn’t something I could eat a lot of. One of the flavors in the pudding gave it a very particular taste, it almost seemed to taste like pepper jack cheese? :confused3 That’s probably wayyy off, but that’s the only way I could describe it. the tomato vinaigrette added a nice acidity to the dish and helped cut the richness of the pudding and fried-ness. On top of the crab there was a small salad of greens, hearts of palm, and peaches, but I wished there were more peaches. Overall, it wasn’t a bad dish, but definitely one of my least favorites of our trip.

My dad decided to try something he had never had before:

IMG_0693.jpg

Lamb T-bone
Roasted Baby Artichokes, Caperberries, Yukon Crushed Olive Oil Potatoes, Lemon Butter $47.00

My dad wanted to order things that he doesn’t get to eat much, if at all, at home. I don’t think we’ve ever made lamb at home, and my dad has never had a lamb t-bone, so he was excited to try something new. The lamb was well cooked, but kind of hard to eat due to the bones and one piece being really thick. The lamb was somewhat gamey, so I wasn’t the biggest fan of the meat, but my dad thought it was good. Most of the artichokes were tough, so that was a disappointment :worried:. The caperberries added a nice sour/tart counterpart that cut the richness of the meat and butter. The potatoes were just potatoes, and I would have definitely preferred a creamier mashed potato side. This dish was good, but nothing we would rush to order again.

Loving the cheese selection I got the prior night, for my dessert I ordered more cheese:

IMG_0695.jpg

California Grill’s Cheese Board $20.00

Dessert was some tasty, tasty cheese. My favorites were the MT TAM and the Affinée Blue. Sheep and goat cheeses are not my favorite (maybe I need time for them to grow on me :P), so the Bijou and Flore Sardo were my least favorite. The jelly on the right and the honeycomb were my favorite accompaniments, and used them with all of the cheeses. The sweet, Marcona almonds added a nice crunch, but I mostly just ate them on their own. The accompanying toast included figs, which was good, but I would have preferred a plain toast because it was too much fig for me.

Along with my cheese selection, I was given something sweet:

IMG_0698.jpg

A nice piece of congratulatory dark chocolate. Just the right amount of sweetness to end the meal.

My dad decided to get the:

IMG_0697.jpg

Valrhona Chocolate Cake
Warm Chocolate Cake with Molten Center, Coffee Bark, and White Coffee Ice Cream $13.00

My dad likes molten chocolate cakes, so this is the dessert he ordered. The cake was tasty, a rich chocolate with warm, liquid-y center. The ice cream had a good, natural coffee taste, which I thought was kind of unexpected due to it being white and not brown like most coffee ice creams. The wafer on top looked nice, but didn’t add much. My dad is a big fan of white chocolate, so he liked the bark. Overall, this dessert was good, but I feel that other variations of this dessert, like with raspberry or salted caramel, would be better.

Overall I would say that this meal was good, and our biggest disappointment would have to have been the soft shell crab entrée. The sushi was our favorite part of the meal, and I can definitely see myself returning to order sushi and appetizers, skipping the entrées completely. While this meal wasn’t the best, California Grill is still one of my favorite restaurants, for the food and ambiance. We used a total of 4 dining credits (2 each) and the meal would have been $?? (will add cost when I’m back home and have the receipts) if we had paid out of pocket.

Yay, you're back! Great pics of California Grill. The presentation of the soft shell crab entree is very striking.

I agree with you - whenever I return to Cali Grill for a full meal, I think I'd like to order sushi, appetizers, and maybe dessert, but skip the entrees.

Maybe it's just me but those crabs just don't look that appealing. They almost appear gritty looking.

I guess I just never thought soft shelled crabs looked good when mom was chomping on them. I'm kinda surprised you ordered them. What made you pick that dish?

Everything else looked tasty! Awesome review (:
I'm expecting another review tomorrow!

Great review of Coral Reef! :thumbsup2 I largely agree with your assessment - it's a great value on the dining plan (thanks to the expensive 1-credit entrees), but the food isn't amazing. It's kind of a shame IMO - at one point in time, Coral Reef was one of the nicest restaurants in WDW (it was originally 2 credits on the DDP), but now the food isn't something I miss when I'm home.

Another interesting change - the Chocolate Wave used to be made with alcohol (it used to have an asterisk on the menu, just like the mousse. and when I look up recipes for it online, the recipes mention gran marnier). Now that asterisk is gone. I wonder why they changed the recipe?

Yeah, it's definitely a great value on the dining plan. I would totally take friends there if they havent been before, but I'm in no rush for myself to return.

The Chocolate Wave didn't have an alcohol taste, so I guess they must have changed the recipe. I still liked it though. ::yes::

Thank you for your review of Coral Reef. We've only eaten there a few times due to my allergies, but I love to see new reviews. I have to agree that I like the tables that are further away from the tank.

Great looking food and great looking desserts!!

Can't wait for more!

The atmosphere is definitely wonderful, but the food left much to be desired.

That's cool about the Pellogrino! It must be so nice to have on a hot summer day...

Definitely. You get the bubbly-ness of a soda, with the refreshing quality of water.

Coral Reef is one of the restaurants we are going to in October. I really want to try it because I hear such mixed reviews - I want to know what I am talking about if I tell people that they should or should not eat there!

Let me ask you about the aquarium...for the people sitting up close - did they have other people "hovering" in their space? Meaning did people (or did parents send their kids) come closer to have a look?? I think I would feel more claustrophobic from that than from the tanks. What do you think would be the best spot if you had a choice??

When we we there there war never anybody (child or adult) hovering at the tanks. We were there for an earlier lunch (just before noon) so I can't comment on how it is later in the day. If I had a choice I definitely would pick the second tier, at a table closer to the tank. It allows you to see more of the tank, and since it's on the edge of the second tier it's mostly an unobstructed view.

Looking forward to seeing more of your reviews. Reading them is like being there!

Excellent reviews so far!! I'm joining along for the ride!

Enjoying your reviews. Great job!

Hey there! Just found your review and I'm loving it so far! Keep them coming, please :flower3:

I'm really enjoying your reviews and can't wait to read more. We ate at most of the same places on your review and so far your reviews are spot on with what we thought.

Thanks everyone! :goodvibes

Yeah, it was a great trip. I really want to go one time with a larger group though. If only my friends weren't all poor college kids :upsidedow

The crab was definitely a beautiful dish. If only I liked how it tasted as much as how it looked :(

It was like they had colored breadcrumbs - it wasn't really gritty. I don't really remember mom eating many soft shelled crabs. :confused3 She would eat blue crabs at home though. I picked it cause I've never really had much soft shelled crab. I wanted to try something different and new!

Those sushi appetizers have my mouth watering. YUM! I'm definitely getting sushi for lunch today...although, that tends to be my normal Friday lunch, but I always think that maybe I should get something else. But seeing your photos and reading those descriptions make me really want sushi today.

I just found your reviews and I'm so happy! You have a great way of describing the food.

California Grill is possibly my favorite restaurant in Disney World, although that distinction seems to change with every trip. It will be closed for renovations during our next trip so I'm going to be missing it :( But that just leaves a night open to try another restaurant :thumbsup2

Joining in! This dining review is dangerously convincing me to pick the DxDDP for our upcoming August 2012 trip.

AWESOME reviews!!! You are really making me consider the Deluxe Dining plan for our trip in March....if free dining is offered, I think we will upgrade! Question for you though...If you had to pick one restaurant as your least favorite, what would you say it was?

Thanks for a job well done. :thumbsup2

Our fourth Disney was spent at Hollywood Studios. After the early morning rush of TSMM, RR, and ToT, we had lunch at:

Mama Melrose!

After ordering our drinks (iced teas) we were also served some rolls with olive oil:
IMG_0864.jpg

This was essentially the same bread as we were served at Coral Reef the day before. It was crusty and warm, but nothing particularly special :sad2: While the olive oil was something different, I would have preferred something other than just pepper in the oil. Some herbs or balsamic would have been nice.

For my appetizer I felt like a salad, and this one appealed to me the most:

IMG_0865.jpg

Mixed Greens Salad
with Dried Cherry Vinaigrette, Candied Walnuts, Fresh Pear, and Imported Gorgonzola Cheese $7.49

I love salads with the fruit, nut, and cheese combination. This salad had a great ratio of ingredients, though I wouldn’t object to there being more cheese (I love cheese :lovestruc). The cherries were sweet and tart, the nuts slightly sweet and crunchy, the cheese rich and creamy, and the pear crisp and fresh. A perfect combination. The greens were just standard mixed greens that you could get from any grocery store, but it was nice and fresh (no icky wilted lettuces). The only thing that I think the salad could benefit from was the vinaigrette. It didn’t have much taste, either due to a lack of seasoning or not enough dressing in the first place. A yummy salad I wouldn’t hesitate to order again!

My dad decided to get a favorite of his:

IMG_0866.jpg

Fresh Mozzarella and Vine-Ripened Tomatoes
with Marinated Sweet Onions, Balsamic Drizzle, Basil-Scented Olive Oil, and Fresh Sweet Basil $7.99

My dad’s a big fan of Italian foods, and this has to be one of his favorite Italian appetizers/salads. The three slices each of the tomato and mozzarella made a nice sized starter. There was also a decent amount of basil, which I appreciated cause I really like what it adds to the salad (and it’s one of my favorite herbs). The salad was topped with some balsamic and freshly ground black pepper, but we wanted more balsamic (yumm) and less of the pepper (it overwhelmed the delicate mozzarella).

For my entrée I decided to get the:

Shrimp Campanelle
Shrimp over Campanelle Pasta tossed with Four-Cheese Sauce with Broccoflower, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Fresh Spinach, and Sweet Onions $19.99

I was surprised at how good this pasta dish was! I was just essentially expecting just a basic, alfredo type sauce, but this had a lot more flavor. I really liked the tart/sweet flavor the sundried tomatoes added to the creamy pasta. The broccoflower seemed like a broccoli/cauliflower hybrid, which was a nice variation from the typical broccoli you see in pasta dishes. The basil chiffonade on top of the dish added a nice freshness to the rich pasta. There was a good portion of the pasta for a lunch serving, including 5 large and plump shrimp, and I ate most of the dish. Overall, a really good pasta dish, that I am glad I ordered. :thumbsup2

My dad decided to get the:

IMG_0870.jpg

IMG_0871.jpg

Seafood Cioppino
Fresh Clams, Shrimp, Calamari, and Mussels tossed with Fregola Pasta and a flavorful Tomato Seafood Broth $21.99

I had mentioned to my dad that this was one of the new entrées that was recently introduced to the restaurant with the new chef. It really appealed to him, so he decided to order it. While this dish didn’t resemble most cioppinos I’ve seen, it was still a very delicious take on it. The seafood was really fresh and well cooked. The calamari was rings only (no tentacles) and tender (not rubbery as it can get when it’s overcooked). The fregola was toasted so it had a nice nutty flavor and had a great, al dente texture. The broth was the real winner here – super flavorful (I’m pretty sure they used a white wine, super delish) and a great with all the seafood and pasta. Another great entrée at Mama Melrose!

Since we had booked a Fantasmic Dinner Package, I knew we were going to given a pre-plated dessert. I wasn’t really feeling like chocolate for dessert, so I asked if there was anything else I could get and our waitress said that I could get vanilla gelato, which I went for. I forgot to take pictures this time (sorry), but it was just a dish a tasty, (essentially) vanilla ice cream. The other dessert (that my dad ate) was the Chocolate Cannoli Cake. This was a small cake with yummy filling and it was on a really good wine sauce. It was a nice, new take on a basic chocolate cake.

This meal was a really good table service in HS. It’s also a great deal on the regular dining plan if you can get the Fantasmic Dinner Package (whoot appetizer!). My salad and our entrées were definitely the highlights of our meal, and I would definitely come back. I really want to try some of the other entrées and desserts they offer. We used a total of 2 dining credits, and the meal would have been $?? (will add in cost later) if we had paid out of pocket.

Great to see a positive review of Mama Melrose's Ristorante! Before this year, it seemed to be one of the worst-reviewed restaurants in WDW, but I think the chef change helped improve things. The food looks better than expected - even the unique take on cioppino.

I'm so bad at keeping up with my review. I really need to start posting regularly. Sorry y'all! :flower3:

Yummm, I love sushi. And I had some for dinner tonight. :cloud9:

Thanks! And that's sad about your trip, but at least you get to try somewhere new.

Joining in! This dining review is dangerously convincing me to pick the DxDDP for our upcoming August 2012 trip.

I have mixed feelings about the DxDDP. I love all the food, but at times it could be a bit much, especially with all the traveling to and from ADRs. It is definitely something I would use again, but probably on a shorter trip.

AWESOME reviews!!! You are really making me consider the Deluxe Dining plan for our trip in March....if free dining is offered, I think we will upgrade! Question for you though...If you had to pick one restaurant as your least favorite, what would you say it was?

Thanks for a job well done. :thumbsup2

Thanks. :goodvibes For this trip my least favorite restaurant would have definitely been Le Cellier. We went for dinner, and it was definitely not up to par with Disney's other signature restaurants. The review is coming.

Mama Melrose looks good! I think we'll have to put that on the list for next year.
