First Time Cruiser - Room Location Question

Hello!

I'm sure this question's been asked several million times. I just couldn't find the answer I've been looking for so here goes.

I'm planning a cruise in August for me and my wife and son. We've never been and I was wondering if there were any room locations better than others [mid-ship, aft, etc]? I get a little motion sickness but I've been told that these ships are pretty stable. I'd like to be not too far from pools, dining, entertainment, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would look at room reviews once you are at the point of selecting. There are a lot of specifics out there on individual rooms. I recommend not getting a room below the kids pools, these rooms can be noisy and people report hearing deck chairs being moved around above their heads early morning.

We prefer between Midship and Aft (more Aft than midship if that makes sense) as it is closer to the Nursery, Cabanas, Pools and the Dining Rooms.

Plus the Aft the elevators dont seem quite as busy as the Midship.

Midship and low is your best bet for avoiding motion sickness. Aside from that, all locations are closer to some things and father from others. Since you will be all over the ship during your cruise it really doesn't matter that much. We have stayed all the way Forward, Midship and all the way Aft and had great experiences each time.

Mid deck midship is best, so the middle of the ship, thing of a playground seasaw the middle moves the lest.

Not low, as that's next to the random movement of the waves and it's near the engines, enclosed and claustrophobic.

Sea sickness occurs when your ears detect movement but your eyes see walls and say walls for not move, think motion sickness if you read in a car you feel sick, if you drive you go not feel sick.

Psi get fresh air view the horizon at the widest point let your brain work it out do not over drink or over eat first days.

Most of it is basis science, the closer you are to an impact the worse it is, so the closer to the movement closer to the sea is the worst. Think of a train, do the noise and vibration of the tracks get worse the closer the train is.

Mid-ship is best for people prone to motion sickness. You don't say which ship you will be on, but I'd recommend deck 7 if you are on the Fantasy or Dream. It's midway between the lower decks where the main dining rooms and theaters are and deck 11 where the pools, drink stations, and Cabanas restaurant are.

FWIW, I feel the "motion of the ocean" the most when walking back to my stateroom at night. When I go to bed and close my eyes, it rocks me to sleep. It doesn't seem to matter what part of the ship our room is in, but we're usually on deck 7.

You can't have all of those things. The pools are all on the top deck. The adult pools are towards the front, so you may want to consider not being towards the front of the ship. However, on the new ships, the evening shows and the movie theaters are in the front. But the adult entertainment is in the back on the new ships, but the front on the old ships. The movie theater on the classic ships is towards the rear. All of your main dining rooms are in the mid-rear and low in the ship. But the buffet is at the top and the rear.

I'm not trying to be snooty, but you have a little bit of figuring out to do first. Like which ship will you be sailing on? What are your priorities (spending every day back and forth to the pool? being close to the kids clubs? being close to main dining?) What room category are you willing to afford (there are some inside cabins higher up, but there aren't many)?

Finally the ships are only a few minutes walk, 5-6, from the bow to the stern. So unless you have mobility requirements you will always be close to something.

We've only been on dream class, always mid-ship and have been on decks 2, 8 & 9. We also only stay in inside rooms. Deck 2 we felt more vibrations, deck 8&9 we felt very little movement. My wife gets a little bit of motion sickness but takes a Bonine in the morning and before dinner and she's always fine. We usually feel most movement in the MDRs at dinner when leaving ports, otherwise both ships are very smooth.

We loved deck 8 because we could take the stairs pretty much everywhere. The only time we took the elevator was after dinner when DW and DD were wearing heels, those times we always went to the rear elevator to go up, do not wait at midship elevators after dinner.

And one last tip, be prepared for your new expensive vacation addiction. Cruises are the only vacays we want to do now. We're heading to Hawaii in 4 weeks and we all wish we were on another cruise, luckily we'll be trying out the Wonder from Vancouver to San Diego in September.

We stayed in 6568 on the fantasy and loved it. It was a category 5D room. It was right by the elevators/stairs (heard NO noise from this at all). The midship staircase was accessible to run up to cabanas/pools or down to deck four or lower to the dining rooms. We felt no movement at all. I would book this room again in an instant. The best part that we felt like we were basically smack dab in the middle (length and height wise) so getting to any point of the ship from our room would take the same amount of time. Plus being in the middle was a great incentive to just take the stairs up to the higher decks. If we were on deck 2, I probably would have opted for elevators a little more often.

We had a non-connecting room and that really helped keep the noise level down. I've heard from others with a connecting room who can hear loud noisy neighbors.

I agree with a PP who said that you've got to pick what's most important to you and choose your room location based on that. It's a huge ship and everything is spread out, but you'll find that it's easy and fast to get around.

I cannot begin to thank you all for the great advice. Yes, I have some homework [which I've been doing for a few months]. This community is great at helping out. I have yet to figure out which ship to book and yes, a big concern of mine is the motion aspect of it. I told my DW that we'd be better off on land at WDW for 10-days!!!:-) No motion sickness there....except on Mission Space! Thanks again everyone!

Thanks for posting this! We booked this room for next summer and sounds like the perfect room!

Our first cruise we were low and aft. We could feel and hear the props of the ship and got and early morning earful when we were docking.

This cruise we are mid ship and up mid way.
