So I'm new to this. Is it possible to just get along, or should I call up the request line? Is it unreasonable to ask for Chef TJ at 'Ohana if I can still eat the shrimp? Any traps, like zebra domes, I need to look out for? All advice gratefully appreciated. BTW, the rest of my family is ferociously omnivorous.

Not understanding here what you don't eat (fish only I suppose) especially in regard to the zebra domes - what sort of trap would be in those (unless you mean gelatin?)

I would call the dining line and tell them your preference! Don't ever hesitate to do that- they'll mark your ressie with the right information. And even if you're marked veggie, there's no problem ordering fish anyway!

The gelatin, exactly. Sometimes, you can't tell by looking. And things that are fried in the same oil used to fry meat. If my veggie burger is fried in beef fat, it's not really veggie anymore, either.

There are a lot of specifics about frying items, especially when it comes to seafood. You must keep oils separate for frying, like french fries as opposed to fried fish. That is where I used to run into issues years ago, since I am allergic to shellfish.

Many chain restaurants have begun to use all vegetable oils in an effort to keep up with the trend. You can ask the restaurant if they use vegetable oils in their cooking or you can note it on your ressies.

I mean if they're thrown on the grill with the beef burgers and there's cross-contamination.

I'd get in touch with special diets and specify you need no animal products at all other than seafood. (Unless you do such animal products as butter, milk or honey that don't involve killing the critter, if you do you can specify that as well)

When I was at Pecos Bill's the person in front of me ordered the veggie burger.
They were directed to pick up their burger at the fixings bar where they only do vegetables.

I hope this helps.

I know when I ate at Boma a large majority of the desserts had gelatin, as did the desserts at The Wave. I think only the gelato was the gelatin free dessert there.

As for cross contamination on the grill, if it is a concern to me then I just ask that the burger be microwaved instead of grilled.

I am also a Pescetarian (but do eat a mix of Vegetarian and Vegan foods)
and I have not had any problems finding something to eat.

I am also allergic to Meat (beef, poultry, pork or their products) so
I called and added my allergy to my ADR information because I read in
one of the Vegan food reviews that at Tusker house(we have ressies)
there Tofu dish is cooked
in skillets that meats are also cooked in but this dish is on the veggie
table (so you would naturally think it would be safe).
In the Vegan review I read they had added that they were Vegans to the
dietary information and the chef at Tusker house made them there own
plater of the tofu dish and showed them what was safe for vegans on the buffet.
So I would call and add your dietary information so that the chef will
be able to tell you what you would be safe eating.

I will also be eating at Ohanas. Hoping to eat the shrimp--I'm sure the chef will speak with me but
I'm sure that they seperate Shellfish from other meats because there are so many people who are
allergic to shellfish and they wouldn't want the crosscontamination.

I asked this same question last month (got some not-so-nice responses) but anyway it's really up to you. Look on the menus for places you have ADRs and see what they have. Right now I'm thinking I will just "wing it" at all but one restaurant (very meat-centric) and go with the flow. Right now I am vegan, but that's more of an experiment than anything else. Typically the only thing that keeps me from calling myself vegetarian is that I will, on rare occasions, eat fish.
Anyway, enough about me!

Like I said, I would look at menus and decide what you want to do...ultimately I think it comes down to how easy-going you feel like being on your vacation.

Whatever you choose, it will be the right one for you!

Thanks for your help, everyone! I feel very reassured now.

Runnergrl, I'm sorry people were less than friendly to you. Dis'ers are normally a lovely bunch.

Pescetarianism is a dietary choice, in which a person — known as a pescetarian — eats fish or other non-mammalian aquatic animals but will not eat terrestrial animals or marine mammals. Some animal products like eggs and dairy may be part of a pescetarian diet.

Terms like pesco-vegetarianism are sometimes used to describe pescetarianism, to emphasize that pescetarians abstain from eating the flesh of land animals. However, these terms are controversial and lesser-used, in part because they imply that pescetarianism is a type of vegetarianism. The Vegetarian Society, which initiated popular use of the term vegetarian as early as 1847, does not consider pescetarianism a valid vegetarian diet.[1] Some other entities accept pescetarianism as a valid vegetarian diet, including MedicineOnline.com,[2] Vegetarian.LifeTips.com,[3] and the Centre for Cancer Education.[4] The definitions of "vegetarian" in authoritative, mainstream dictionaries vary.[5]
