First round of stimulus checks deposited today

For my insurance the human resource department has told me that he needs to be claimed as a dependent. I follow what they tell me since I have very good health insurance and he does not need the extra expense. Maybe it is a lie but either way we claimed him last year as he was a full time student (graduated last May). We have not filed our taxes yet this year taking advantage of the extension.
Yes, it's a lie.

I assure you you don't.

I had claimed myself on my taxes since I was 17, when I graduated college at 22 I was kicked off my mom's insurance several weeks after graduating as it was pre-ACA. I got my own plan (did not have an employer at that point that covered me was working retail at that time), then a year later was able to be re-added to my mom's insurance once ACA went into force. I was on that for a year but the next year I got my own insurance as I was working for a company that gave me health coverage and it made financial sense to do so (my mom and I were actually working for the same company and financially 2 single plans were cheaper at that point than a family plan).

That entire time I still claimed myself on taxes also working throughout college. Back in 2008 (prior to me graduating college) under that stimulus package I got a check as I claimed myself on taxes AND I was under my mom's insurance at that point.

It's not that your child is a full time student, I was too, and I claimed myself on taxes from age 17 and up. It has to do with how much parental aid/support as well as living address.

Either a lie or a misunderstanding. “Dependent” on your insurance not on your taxes. Legally he can stay until he’s 26 even if he’s not dependent on you for anything else.

He could even be married and stay on insurance!

Great I will fix it in the future but either way it does nothing for them now. Again I am grateful that both of us as working and that I guess we are rich. Even though it does not seem that way. Hopefully everyone is safe and stays healthy.

I went to the IRS website to check the status of my check. Put in my 2019 tax info and it said it did not have the information needed to deposit my check automatically! The funny thing is, they had the information they needed to withdraw the money I owed them from my account!!

Yep. My DD was working full time and had insurance provided by the culinary union so was double insured. I insisted we keep her on ours and I’m glad I did because now she is stuck in Seattle furloughed from a job she only got to work for 1.5 months. She’s going to stay on until she can’t.

I'm curious - has anyone used the Get My Payment app and got something other than the "cannot determine your eligibility" message?

Yep same here!

Happy to see discussion re: claiming your adult children on your taxes... My heart goes out to all the families that are now regretting claiming their children as dependents. Like other posters have said, I’ve been filing taxes independently since I was a teenager. I was a full time student and even lived at home during the summers, but I filed independently.

I have not claimed DD 21 on my taxes for the last 2 years. She filed herself. She still did not receive the stimulus money and nobody seems sure if she will because I “could” have claimed her.

Same for my DS-23. Still waiting but no pending deposit in his account as of yet.

These under 24s...I still wonder if those whose parents are eligible are getting theirs. And those whose parents are NOT eligible aren't? @kelpricer I wonder if you are not eligible like me and DH are not??? ANd therefore they deem our kids 'could have been claimed as dependent'. I will say that, come November, I will be going a different direction if my DS is deemed 'could be a dependent' just because we make above a certain amount.

Because he is on his own. Not dependent on us at all. Just on our health insurance. But has his own car and apartment and full time job. Just because we can afford to take care of him, doesn't mean we should. He is an adult who needs to stand on his own...he has flown the nest. He struggles. But we did too at 23. At any rate, he is eligible...just as eligible as my 50 year old SIL who got her stimulus yesterday.

Yes. I used it and was told we are eligible but they do not have my bank info for direct deposit. Like another poster, I have made EFT payments (4x a year estimated taxes for us) from my checking account. So I feel they should have it. I was unsuccessful entering my bank info yesterday, after 3 tries it kicks you out for 24 hrs. I think my issue had to do with the fact that instead of taking the refund for 2019 I applied the overpayment to my 2020 estimated tax. So my actual refund amount was zero. At first I put in the amount of the overpayment, which didn't work. The website asked if you got a credit or refund, I'm not sure it can handle the zero refund.

I tried again today and kept getting 'technical error please try again', but after 3 tries was again kicked out until tomorrow.

Anyone who was getting the "eligibility can't be determined" message yesterday get anything different today? I'm getting the same, and none of the situations the IRS lists as reasons for it apply to us, so....

My DS's is now kicked out fr 24 hours since he looked too many times. So we're not sure. But there is no pending deposit in the bank account.

I had DD21 claim herself for the first time this year and she filed a few weeks ago. On the website yesterday it told me she was eligible but they needed her bank info (she owed and had paid by direct debit) and I was able to enter it. Just to say that I don't think under-24s are being rejected as a matter of course. The website is definitely struggling and not everyone is going to get their payment this week. I hope your DD receives hers soon.

I got that message yesterday and today. And, like you, none of those listed reasons apply. We qualify for the stimulus and our direct deposit is accurate. I did get our federal tax refund direct deposited yesterday.

My husband and I should be getting a check. We are eligible but pay every year so they don’t have our bank info. I’m wondering tho if she’s not eligible because she lived here most of last year But moved out in November (although I don’t know how the IRS would know when she moved out) so “we could have claimed her” and was in college. I’ve seen posts that college students aren’t the catch as a whole but could it be if they live at home as opposed to living on their own??? If that’s the case though it doesn’t explain your DS since he has lived separate from you. She’s fine with waiting for the money, it’s just not knowing if it’s coming
