First Responders Firefighters ambushed in Idaho...

So sad, what on earth could the motive possibly be to attacking firefighters? Never heard of such a thing, what particular brand of crazy is percolating in the Pacific NorthWest?

Hasn’t that area sometimes attracted extreme prepper/survivalist types? Just a thought. But since the fire was apparently deliberately set as a lure, it’s unlikely to be a matter of some hidden isolationist defending his turf. Probably just another garden variety psycho stewing on an evil plot. Wouldn’t be surprised if a “manifesto” turns up somewhere.

Grace and peace :sad1: to the victims and their families. This is another good reminder to thank and revere all the brave first responders that run towards danger to keep the rest of us safe. :flower3:

Yes, that area is known for the survivalist/sovereign citizen type - not that we know if this incident is related. What a horrible tragedy though! It's heartbreaking and mindboggling that it could happen. My condolences to all those affected.

the suspected sniper has been identified-it appears he is not local to the pnw.

this is local to us. the 2 days preceding yesterday's horrific events dh and I were attending a conference held about 1 mile from and directly in front of these tragic horrific events. one presentation we attended was in an outdoor arena that looked directly at canfield mountain. dh and I had sat there and remarked how beautiful and peaceful the mountain is :sad1:

this is terrible, horrible, unforgivable. flags in our neighborhoods are at half mast, people tearfully lined the freeway overpasses last night during the procession to the medical examiners office, the smell of smoke in the air is a constant reminder of these devastating losses of human life.

our local news has updated information indicating he's been living largely homeless in the area since some time in 2024. no criminal history other than encounters with the p.d. due to trespassing and wellness checks (parking the truck he lived in on private property/a prior roommate in another part of Idaho observed some odd behaviours he was concerned about ). his family is shocked b/c they claim he desired to become a firefighter.

It's heartbreaking really, and very frightening. I cannot wrap my mind at why somebody would harm firefighters (or any first responder for that matter) :(

The same family that left him homeless since 18 or 19 is shocked? That's an odd conclusion on the families part

I don't get the impression that they 'left' him homeless. when he graduated high school he chose to move from Arizona to Oklahoma where his grandfather lived, then he moved to Idaho back in '24 to take a job with a tree cutting service in hopes of gaining skills to join the panhandle firefighting services. he lived with a roommate for a handful of months. he seemed to have sporadic contact with his family but they said he was a 'loner'. he was an adult and if an adult wants to live a nomadic lifestyle their family has no say or control over it.

"Broney... now that's a name I've not heard in a long time...a long time"😕 😕

I met one in Oregon as part of my litter crew. As his shift leader I failed to take compassion or even a glimpse into who he was and why he was picking up garbage. At the end of the contract I took him, his buddy and my son to Denny's for celebration, dropped his buddy off and then drove to the apartment complex where he had a couch. The 3 of us sat on the tailgate as he shared his story... well I said.. I work this job to travel by train to Disneyland 🚆 🚆 🚆 and I want you to travel with us ..all expenses paid . That was 2011.. not sure if the magic ✨ ✨ worked or not...there seems to be more failure than success

How awful, it sounds like this person was troubled when adding up the alternative lifestyle, homelessness and the fact a welfare check was mentioned in one of the articles.

It is astonishing how little mental health care is actually available when time and time again it proves to be such an overarching threat to society. Substance abuse and mental health issues are like a firehose of trouble completely ignored until tragedy happens, and there is so much tragedy now it went from random acts to chronic. How is it nothing is changing?
