We have recently purchased DVC at BCV. Our UY is February and we now have our 2012 points available for use. We are going to try to book BCV for next May. My question is do we need to bank these 2012 points for next year's vacation since the vacation will be after our points would expire on January 31st? :confused3

Yes, in order for February 2012, points to be used in May 2013, they will need to be banked. The February 2012, use year banking deadline is September 30, 2012.

Thank you for the quick reply! I'm sure the more we use it the easier it will be to understand :thumbsup2

If you want to use your 2012 points for that trip, yes you will have to bank them. Will that be your next trip using DVC points? If so, yes, bank them. If it turns out that you will need points before February you could borrow from 2013.

Congratulations on your purchase!

Points need to be available in your account for your reservation dates. If you are checking in during your 2013 UY you need to bank your 2012 points.

Think of it this way:

2012: 2/1/12 to 1/31/13
2013: 2/1/13 to 1/31/14
2014: 2/1/14 to 1/31/15

Your date of stay is in the 2013 use year. So 2013 is current points, you can also use 2012 banked and borrow 2014.

Sorry to hijack, but I have a related question...

I'm getting ready to book a trip for Jan 2013. I have a use year of Dec, so I have to bank my 2011 points to use for the trip. My question is, when I book online, does the system automatically use the oldest points? I want to use the banked points first.

Thanks!

I don't know the answer but I wanted to tell you that your cakes are incredible! I have never seen such creative cakes and I'm obsessed with cake shows :lovestruc

yes it will take your banked points first. If you are worried just call member services.

Thanks! I figured that was how it worked. I am going to call this morning to make the reservation. It looks like there is plenty of availability for my dates.

I think UY throws everyone for a loop. Here is how I think of it...UY refers to the month you are receiving your points and has to do with when you travel. For a february use year you will have 12 calendar months from February to use that years points. For example if you received your Feb 2012 points and want to travel in January of 2013 you would not need to bank. On the other hand if you want to travel in March of 2013 you would need to bank your Feb 2012 UY into the next year. I hope that helps. The confusing part is that we traditionally think of things running from Jan 1 to Dec 31st but for DVC you need to think in terms of your UY or the month in which you received your points. In actuality it has little to do with the year because your UY crosses years. I hope that doesn't confuse you more.

This is very helpful, and you are definitely correct! My use year is December, so it seems even more confusing since I will be using my 2012 points for travel in 2013.
