First Pictures with my K100D!!!!!

Ok, so I finally got my new camera and here are the first two pictures!! I know these are REALLY rough, so please keep in mind they're my first two SLR shots and I'm VERY inexperienced. But please, give ALL SORTS of critiques!!!

This one was just a candle that I liked the color of.

And this one is a picture of a shed I have, taken through a window and screen, so I didn't think it was TOO horrible given the circumstances. Lighting and coloring is off a LOT.

I like the candle shot, you can try putting things near it and watch how they show up in candlight
The shed you should have backed up some and not let your subject fill the picture
Also I can not tell what you focal point was on it

You got the 50mm prime too right? I love mine. It makes such a difference comapred to the kit lens. I feel guilty because I keep going back to it and now I wonder just how often I'll even use the kit lens.

Yeah, I do have the prime lens. I was using the kit lens on both of those, but even after I started this thread I was taking some pictures in my office because a lady got a bouqet of roses, so I whipped out the prime lens and OMG!!!! The DIFFERENCE!! The colors were incredible and I can't wait to get these on my PC and see how they did in larger scale. Needless to say I'm in love with my prime lens!

Nice job on the candle pic ... candles really create a nice mood.

I've found that board games (if they've got interesting pieces) can make nice subjects by candle-light. This is a shot of my Dread Pirate game, lit by a pair of tea-light candles:

I took this with my Canon S3 IS. With a DSLR and a prime lens, you'd have even more control over the DOF and could pick out different elements in creative ways. Setting things up like this is a fun way to practice composition, too.

Glad you're enjoying the new camera! The barn shot is definitely hurt a little by shooting through the screen; I'm sure that the same picture taken outside will be a lot sharper. The glass might be throwing off the white balance, that could either be fixed in post-processing (very easy with RAW, probably still manageable with jpg), again, being outside might help that as well.

As for games, I did a board game shot at WDW but the lighting is nothing interesting, but I still think it's kind of a neat shot. It also shows a little bit of the depth of field control that you can do with the 50mm lens, this one is F2.0 at ISO 800.
