Who? Myself, DW (Thirtysomethings--for a few more months anyway ;) ), DD 11, DS 8, DS 7

When? March 8-10th

Where? Royal Pacific Resort

Why? Needed to escape this unending winter in southern Ontario

How? Unfortunately by van...relatively last minute decision(mid-January) meant that any cheap flights were gone. I90/I79/US19/I77/I95/I4

The Preparation Hour upon hour of scanning the Disboards to get the lowdown for our trip. Great tips and advice day after day from the board "guardians".

The Journey A nervous week of scanning weather reports hoping for clear weather. We depart 4p.m. Thursday with no precip. forecast for that night though a huge storm is brewing for Friday/Saturday. We breeze over the Peace Bridge at Buffalo and continue on to our stay over destination of Bridgeport, West Virginia. We lose count of the number of Ontario license plates we pass/are passed by on the way(majority of which seemed to attached to Minivans with DVD's burning in the back---we Canucks love our minivans :lmao: )

Friday morning we depart for a long day of travel to our destination of Hawthorn Suites Universal. This day rain dogged us for much of our drive. Georgia never seems to end. Heavy rain and lightning appear in Florida. Fatigue is setting in. I'm amazed at the number of poor souls on motorcyles driving through this crummy weather for Bike Week. We arrive at 11:30 at the hotel and learn that there were tornado warnings all around Orlando.

The Arrival We are dog tired Saturday morning. I had intended to get to RPH around 9 to get our keys, then hit the parks. Not happening. We have a so-so breakfast at the hotel then head to Target to get sunscreen and a few other supplies. By now it is after 11a.m.!!! However I'm not sweating it too much as I'm aware that FOTL awaits us.

We pull up to Universal and follow the signs to RPR. As the planner, I'm excited because my family doesn't know what they are in store for. As we drive up to the entrance we are welcomed by a valet who gives us clear instructions on check-in procedures.

The entrance is fantastic. Staff everywhere to point you in the right direction. Reminded me a lot of a Mexican resort we'd visited in the past.

I'm pleasantly surprised that our room is ready!! :thumbsup2 This is great as we can get settled immediately then head out to the parks.

Our room was in tower 2, almost at the end of the hall. We had a garden view. The room was very nice. It was more spacious than I anticipated from reading the reviews. DW was happy to see the Krug drink dispenser.

Time to head to the parks. How do we get out of here? The resort is a bit overwhelming at first (in fact we were just getting it figured out by the time we had to leave :) ). Up one elevator, through the lobby, down another elevator, follow other guests, reach the boat launch...no Express line?!?!? :rotfl2:

Wow...I am rambling here. Hate to do this but it is way past bedtime here. to be continued...

Still to come...
...The Parks
...Mardi Gras
...Food
...???

OK...kids are in bed and the house is quiet finally. Time for some more...

We take the boat to City Walk. What a great feeling coming under the last bridge and seeing the exciting landscape before your eyes. We've decided we will hit Islands first and Universal later for Mardi Gras.

The park seems busy to us as the two previous trips we'd taken were during the first week of November ('03 & '06) which were dead. Though the parks were busier, they were by no means overcrowded. It's off to Spiderman for our first FOTL experience.

FOTL...it IS all that!!! The wait for Spiderman is posted as 45 minutes. We are in, ride, and out in under 15 minutes (The longest wait all trip for a thrill ride). We've just "found" 30 minutes for other things.

We hit Flying Unicorn, One Fish Two Fish, Cat in The Hat saving 10-20 minutes each. DW starts to understand why we spent a little more to stay onsite.

FOTL guilt is a bit of a new sensation. I've been on the other side watching people load in minutes while the regular line waits and waits so I can identify with the frustration. Walk briskly, don't make eye contact, LOL.

On our last day I needed to get my MIB fix so DS 8 and I rode 3 consecutive times. I was hearing the grumbling as I passed the same people for the third time. Bottom line is it's available to anyone who wants it. We aren't exactly rolling in the green but I look at our US/IOA trips as only once every couple of years, so it's worth the extra expense to get the most out of our vacation.

The attendants do a great job of ensuring their onsite guests are treated well.

Mardi Gras party: We staked out a spot in Amity to watch the parade, in front of Nathans Hot Dogs. The crowd was very thin here and we were totally unobstructed. The performers costumes were, um, er, quite fleshy :) Equal opportunity for both sexes. The interaction with the crowd was great, lots of enthusiasm.

I hadn't told my kids about the beads as I didn't want to disappoint them if they didn't get some. Other posters told me not to worry, and they were so right. Whether it was because the crowd was sparse in our area, or the folks on the floats were excited to hit the parade route, it was raining beads!!! The first couple of floats I grabbed some for the kids, but I quickly realized they were fine on their own. DS's were looking like Mr. T with all the necklaces.

I gave up taking photos after getting pelted with beads LOL. Particularly hazardous to our health were the "double decker" floats. Beads were coming from EVERYWHERE :joker:

After the last float passed us we joined the procession towards the concert stage. WOW, there were a lot of people further down the route. Glad we had a somewhat intimate area to watch. By the time we reached the stage area it was packed. We were all a little tired from a great day, plus were about to lose an hour to the time change, so we headed back to the hotel as Smokey hit the stage singing Going to a Go-Go. There was a great buzz about the place.

Woohoo! A new trip report! Don't wait to long!!! We need details and pictures!! :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Great trip report! Waiting for more,popcorn:: waiting, :surfweb: still waiting, :coffee: . Oh, love the pictures too.

Whoooo hooooooo........

a new trip report!!!!

cannot wait for more - don't leave us hangin' now, ya hear??

Hey Hug The Mouse, I'm from southern Ontario too. Will this stupid winter ever end!!! Sounds like you were one of the lucky ones who escaped the big storm. Smart going!

Loving your trip report!

Think I'm using up my smilie/photo allotment so I'll start another box...

I'm beginning to think that we'll have snow on the ground in May!!! This weather really depresses me. I'm more into digging in the garden vs. digging snow.

Where was I....

Oh yeah, heading out of Mardi Gras. The kids were really jacked up, but were on the delicate line of being OK vs. total meltdown. Look forward to a few years down the road when we can stay for the concert together.

Best ride experiences I'll start with the one that was the most pleasant surprise, DISASTER! We had done Earthquake on our first visit but not the last. Without spoiking it for anyone it was presented very well and the whole family loved it. There were many pop culture references that made us laugh out loud. 2 weeks later we still laugh about a couple scenes. We wanted to see it again but it was so perfect the first time, didn't want to mess with it again. 'til next trip...

On the advice of a poster (forgive me, can't remember who but you'll know who you are) we rode Jaws after dark just before the Mardi Gras parade. It was GREAT! Everything took on a new dimension. The village in the background was all lit up, the flames danced, the boathouse was eery. Only bummer was our row got drenched when Jaws lunged out of the water. My butt was soaked!!

Spiderman was great as usual, but really enjoyed having a bunch of first timers in the car with us. Makes it fun when they don't know what's in store, then scream like crazy scared1

MIB cool2: , only rode it 4 times :( Last ride with DS8 We were in the back seats with a father and his 2 teen sons in front. At the end our car won with an average of about 160,000. I could see their scores up front and they were from 40-90,000. They were shocked at the average and asked what our scores were. I pointed at DS and said that he got 400,000...the looks on their faces was priceless :lmao:

Florida2008B019.jpg

Blutos Bilge Barges, like a lot of rides I reckon, take on an extra element of amusement when there is a "screamer" on board. Our ride had one of these and the ride lends itself to lots of screams and yells. We got drenched!!!! I never will understand the poncho wearers though. Be a Man/Woman...get wet!!!

Worst ride experience T2...I'm guilty here for not checking this out before taking the family to this. It was LOUD and quite scary for DS7. The actors dropped from the ceiling almost behind us. The show itself I guess was cutting edge at one time, but not much so today. I blame myself for not investigating this more beforehand.

Blueman Group The plan was to take DD11 but she didn't feel up to it. Her ticket went to DS8. I was a little worried that he wouldn't enjoy it. I couldn't be more wrong!! He loved it! We loved it! He still talks about it and I hope it's a memory we share for the rest of our lives. Next time I plan to make it a family event.

more to come...

Another day, another 2 inches of snow on the ground...when will it end?!?!??!?

Food
Day 1...Blondies for lunch, nice fresh sandwiches...grazing popcorn, ice cream bars...Louie's for dinner, whole pizza for the kids, spaghetti and meatballs for DW and I, good food fast as we didn't feel like taking an hour for dinner...Nathan's Hot Dogs for pre-Mardi Gras snack, the krinkle fries were a favourite

Day 2...On the boards recommendation we go to the Islands dining room for the breakfast buffet, after 2 days of free breakfasts at other hotels this is paradise!!! A very good selection of excellent breakfast foods with drinks included. We ate so well that we skipped lunch and just grazed at snack carts 'til dinner...Margaritaville for dinner, our first time here...we sat on the covered patio listening to an enthusiastic guitar player, nice atmosphere...food was very good, afterwards a nice stroll back to RPR

Day 3...Return to Islands for breakfast buffet again as it is so good. Great way to start the day...again so full from breakfast that we graze throughout the day...Cinnabons is a favourite

I thought for sure this would be the visit that we finally get to Mythos, but sadly it will be another trip before we have the pleasure.

Characters We saw The Simpsons, Curious George, Woody Woodpecker and his girlfriend, a Moose (not sure who he was), Scooby and Shaggy, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey in Universal. Donkey is hilarious in his interaction with guests. He had the line laughing with his one-liners as we waited our turn.

Florida2008A120.jpg

We saw the Marvel parade and had a photo with Spiderman in Islands. Spiderman was great as always with the kids. We didn't come across any Seuss characters this time, we just seemed to miss them.

Summary Each time we visit Universal Orlando it just gets better and better. I thought 3 days onsite would be plenty, but I left feeling there was so much more that I wanted to see and do. The Royal Pacific was fantastic and the Express privileges are amazing.

As we strolled back to our car, through the front entrance at RPR, after the parks closed on the last day DW said to me "You did good". In my mind I'm thinking "I had a little help".

Thanks to everyone's great tips and advice which helped make this our best Universal trip yet!

Love reading your trip report. Glad you had such a great time.

I can't believe I missed your report. I just saw it tonight. Great report! I wondered if younger kids would like Blue Man Group. Your son's picture says it all!

Great report! I'm so happy that you all had such a good time!

I had to LOL at this part, as I know exactly what you mean! :lmao:

Hug the Mouse, I thoroughly enjoyed your trip report and pics. I'm glad to hear you had a great time!! FOTL priviledges are awesome!! I agree....we'll never stay offsite again, either!:thumbsup2

Thank you for a wonderful report. Love the pictures! Sounds like you had a wonderful time.

DH and I leave 5 weeks from today for 5 days/4 nights at RPR...our first Universal trip. Can't wait to take advantage of FOTL...and I will remember not to make eye contact!

Great trip report!! We can't wait to use FOTL in just 24 days!!!
We are staying at Royal Pacific and can't wait to try the Islands Breakfast.
Just one question, did you make a reservation for Margarittaville??? With all the craziness of ressies at WDW, I'm kinda nervous about not having any for the US/IOA portion of our trip.

Great report, gorgeous photos... looks like you had so much fun.

Glad that y'all have enjoyed the trip report. The boards were so helpful in getting the best from our trip, I hope that my report can add a tip or two for others adventures.

Watching Ellen the past few days leaves our family longing for our return to Universal. We really love it.

A few other things have come to mind that I'd like to add...

...for Loews First welcome gift I chose milk and cookies. They were delivered on our second evening, quart of milk, 3 M&M cookies, 2 oatmeal. The kids were quite impressed to find these waiting. A real nice touch.

...We had a rollaway bed for DS8. They position this between the window and bed. I was concerned from other reviews that it would be obtrusive but there was a space of 10-12 inches between the rollaway and regular bed and we didn't find it to be bothersome for the small amount of waking hours we spent in the room.

...funny thing, while watching kids on Woody's rollercoaster for the umpteenth time, a real woodpecker appeared on a tree in the ride!!! By the time I had the camera ready the coaster had scared the real bird away.

We showed up at Margaritaville shortly after 5p.m. and waited for just a few minutes before we were seated. Apparently your room key gives you FOTL at Citywalk restaurants too, though we didn't bother as the regular wait was reasonable. As we left after 6p.m. the line waiting to sit on the covered porch was maybe 10-12 long.
