We've visited the Fort before, but will be traveling with a new family member this time. In October, the "we" will include: myself, DH, DS8, and Buddy, our lovable mutt who took to camping better than we ever expected he would.

I'm trying to read up on which pet loops are best, but know the best answers can always be found on the boards. So... what loops do you recommend?

Some details you might find helpful
:thumbsup2 we will be kenneling him some days while we're at the parks, but plan to keep him in the camper with us at night

:cool1: DS would prefer we be closer to the pool than the marina this trip

:rolleyes1 I'd like to be relatively close to a comfort station and bus stop

popcorn:: DH just wants some shade and a nice place to park the popup

So, how about it? Which loops fit us best?

We stayed in the 800 loop with our "Buddy" in August. It has a bus stop and is close to the Meadows trading Post and pool. We were close to the comfort station, and if I recall correctly there was a sidewalk leading to the comfort station on each side of the loop, making most sites relatively close to it.

Here is some info to help you decide.
My choice would be the canal side of 1600 loop, 2nd choice would be canal side of 1800. That is the petwalk and close to the playground and pool.

The 1600 loop would be a good choice, I think. It's a short walk to the pool, close to two bus stops depending on which part of the loop you are on, and my personal favorite pet loop.

We just returned from a trip and were in loop 1600. We didn't kennel our dogs. They stayed in the RV when we were gone to the parks.

The new dog run was busy during our visit. We have big dogs but both are rather shy...so they would sit and stare until the other dogs left and then would run like the dickens.

I tried to take Harley to the dog run once but, she didn't seem to care. Being a Beagle, she was more interested in siffing around. She did seem to really like walking along the canal behind our loop. Just like us, she looked like she found the ultimate relaxation while at the fort. Odd how she seemed to know she was on vacation..

I also like 1600 because it is connected to 1700, 1800, 1900. So if your dogs like to walk you can get in a good walk. This past trip I did see people walking their dogs out on the sidewalk along the road to the fenced pet area. You never use to be able to leave the loop so this group of 4 loops always provided a long walk for my big dogs. It is also close to the Meadow pool and my kids easily biked or walked when they were little. I see on the above list that 2 of the loops aren't pet loops anymore. I thought I saw pets in all 4 loops so maybe that hasn't happened yet :confused3

We have small pups, but even with an empty dog park they have no idea what to do. They would just sit and look at us, wondering when we could get back to their walk. The HUGE advantage for us as regards the dog park is that dogs are now allowed on many sidewalks throughout the Fort so people can walk from the pet loops to the park. We used to feel like prisoners in 1800, you couldn't leave the loop! Well, you could walk the canal, too, but you get the idea. Now, you can walk from 1800 all the way to 300... now THAT's a walk!

We camp at FW with 2 active border collies, and really love the 300 loop. Nice dog walk along the canal, and close to the dog park.

One of our dogs isn't great with strange dogs, so he and I would use the dog walk while DH took our younger dog to the dog park every day. We brought her favorite jolly ball so Blizzard could run her little heart out...

We only came across one not-so-social pup at the dog park in our 3 weeks there. Not an "aggressive" dog, just one that wasn't very savvy when it came to communicating with other dogs.

Other than that, everyone we met was terrific and their dogs were all very friendly. Bz made a few doggie friends, but mostly just wanted to play ball with dad. :)
