We are at VWL right now on our first trip as DVC members. Before the trip we had been joking around about getting the dumpster view on our first trip. On the ressie we requested close to elevator and pool view. When we checked in our room was no available, but they said they had a different room that meet most of our requests. This is our first trip traveling with a baby and we were ready to get into a room so we took the one that was ready. As we started heading to our room I told my DW that we were headed to the dumpster view. Sure enough, slid open the blinds and there were the dumpsters/linen carts in all of their glory. I called the front desk and told them that the room was all far as possible from the elevators and the pool, both of me request. The lady on the phone said, "I don't know why you would be assigned that room, it meets none of your requests." We decided that waiting a few hours would be just fine. I am still trying to figure out what it meant when the first lady told me that it met "most of my requests".

Anyway... we ended up on the first floor near the door. I am fine with getting the dumpster view sometime during the next 32 years, but not my first time.

More about the trip to come later...

Ack, sorry that happened. We stayed at VWL for the first time in August (in a 2BR lock off) and we didn't make any requests, just hoped for the best. I was just hoping we wouldn't get a dumpster view for our first time there. We didn't so it was all good.

Have a great trip, enjoy VWL, it is so beautiful there! :)

We had two studio units on our first trip to VWL back in 2002 and guess what, we got the dumpster view and the lock-off studio with no balcony. The dumpster view ended up being not too bad because we saw so much wildlife back there - turtles, deer, armadillos. But the no balcony room I was not happy with.

We are having a blast! We love it here at VWL. It is so peaceful and relaxing. This is our first time being at WDW with our DD (1), it is so much fun to slow down and enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds with her. I have never been so excited to ride Small World twice in a row. Once used to be more than enough, but it so neat to see hear face light up and her eyes dart around.

We have a trip booked for May with my in-laws. They are staying at OKW this trip, but they will be staying at VWL with us in May. They have been a huge help this trip. It is fun to be here as a family.

We've enjoyed Small World many times with our DGC. They just love all of the sights and can't get enough of it. We can't get enough of the DGC, so we're happy to oblige!!!

Ooh... how is your DD's first trip so far? We'll be taking our DD on her first trip next may. It'll be her 1st bday & our anniversary trip. I'm excited but a bit worried about how she'll be taking in all the excitement. Do you mind sharing your experience with us... princess: ?

btw, I LOVE WLV. We almost made a ressie there but decided to try BLT studio and AKV 1 br instead. I want the 1br so bad because I'm sure we'll need the washer/dryer :rotfl2:

HAVE FUN!

I think the dumpster room must be one of the last rooms go get assigned to anyone (for obvious reasons), so when you check in and your room is not ready, the front desk tries to put people in it in order to get them in a room asap. This has happened to us at least two times. I asked DH if someone put a sign on my forehead that said "Give me the dumpster view" after it happened the second time! :)

Glad you were able to switch rooms. Enjoy your stay!

We got the VWL dumpster view for the first time last year. They did say that they were able to give me my request. Since my only request was for upper floor. I guess that was true. We were contemplating checking to see if there was another room available since we were staying for 14 nights, we didn't want to hear the dumpster for that long. But, what we noticed was that, since we were at the end of the hall, it was absolutely quiet.:thumbsup2

We didn't hear anyone screaming loudly as they walked pass our room at 6am. Nope, there were no loud noises. If it wasn't for my son who loves sitting out in the balcony reading his book, we wouldn't even notice a difference in the view. We look out once in a while, but not for a long time. I suppose at that point, we liked the fact that it was quiet more than a better view and we were shocked that we were no longer upset about getting the dreaded dumpster view. However, I do think that because we were on the top floor, the smell or noise has dissipated by the time it reach our height. So that was the reason. I'm sure if we were closer to the ground, I would check with the front desk for any other rooms available.

We're staying at VWL for the first time next year. Could someone please let me know which studio rooms do not have a balcony?

Thanks!:)

We got the no balcony lock off studio in Sept. I was NOT impressed. I consider myself pretty familiar with VWL and had no idea such a room existed. Our request was top floor, lake side and silly me forgot to ask for a BALCONY! I called right away and we were able to get a first floor room on the opposite side. Not ideal but I wasn't taking 5 days of no balcony.

I wish I had written down the room number but I didn't.

What is the reason for building one room with no balcony? Weird.

I was happy that on our only stay at VWL, we did not get the dumpster view. That was in the back of my mind when DH and I checked in.
Instead, we got a ground floor with a nice patio and a lovely view.

Supposedly a construction mistake.

I think the fact that there is a studio without a balcony is due to the design of the building. It's a shame that they couldn't make that particular area a dedicated two bedroom. There are so many dedicated 2 bedrooms at VWL, one more wouldn't matter, and then no one wouldn't have a balcony/patio.

It was so strange I was left scratching my head when I opened the curtains. Obviously as a 2 bedroom it wouldn't be a big issue.

When we were at BCV in May our lockoff 2 bedroom had 3 balconies!

We are on our way home, about to land in dreary, cold Ohio. We had a wonderful time and we are looking forward to our May stay. This trip was only 5 nights and it went way too fast. We are booked for 7 nights in May and I am thinking about seeing if we can still add a few more days on the front or back. We are planning to not go back until the Fall of 2011. We are getting ready to try for our second child and if things go well our DD or DS will be about a year old then and our DD will be 3. It just seems like such a long time between May 2010 and Nov 2011. Oh well, I think we will be plenty busy with trying to handle 2 kids, it seems like just 1 is quite a handful.

Gotta go... all electronic devices must be turned off. Later

We are headed to VWL in 30 days :cool1: Which rooms have the dreaded dumpster views? We are staying in a studio and would like to avoid that view if at all possible.

Sometimes I think you get your "trial by fire" on your first trip, especially at VWL. Maybe that's not true, it just seems it to us. On our first trip in 2002, we got a HA accessible studio, no tub. When we called the front desk within 5 minutes of learning it was HA (they didn't tell us), they would only move us if we paid the moving fee of $25. When we went to the models, we met other first-visit members who'd gotten the studio with no balcony. Then the room charge wouldn't work on our key (we found out when we went to use it), and when the manager where we were called the front desk, he was told "Huh, I don't know-it works fine here" and they hung up. Not a great first visit-but things have improved VERY much ever since.

I love your positive attitude, I wish more people were so nice. Next time you joke about getting a 2B suite by accident.

My DW and I were wondering did DVC charge you extra to change rooms after checking in and stepping into your assigned room?
