We want to run to Target/Costo after we get checked in but really don't want a car rental that first day. Best way to get there for our groceries for the week? Thanks.

Best way is to rent a car honestly. But, if you're tired that first day (we come from the East Coast so are often up for almost 24 hours by the time I get to bed that first day), you could just walk over to the market across the street for a couple things for breakfast, then rent the car the next day.

Without a car, though, how will you go out? You need a rental car unless you don't ever plan on leaving the resort. We always get one at the airport for the whole time.

Agree with @happymommy about just getting what you need for that first night and next morning at the ABC store across the street.

The next day you could either rent a car for the day, or use a cab/uber/lyft to go grocery shopping. You would probably need to do two one-way rides if you do the cab/uber/lyft route.

I have been checking uber and lyft every day for several weeks and there are usually about two or three cars always in the area. We check in on June 1st around 4:30 as well. We plan to uber or lyft to target and back to get all of our stuff.

We will have a car everyday after the first day but since we were not arriving until late, 10 EST time and will have been up since 4 am figured we wouldn't use one the first day.

We are using the free shuttle provided by Aulani through speedi shuttle.

We booked through Costco and it included the transportation from the airport to Aulani.

We used the shuttle (through Costco) and then just walked over to the Island Market for groceries for the first night/morning.

If you plan to have a rental car besides the to/from the airport as the transfers were included in the package, you might call Costco Travel and inquire about the possibility and cost of switching the package to a car rental vs a transfer package. I found that the cost of renting from the Alamo on-site at Aulani was much greater than renting it from the airport. Then you have the flexibility to decide if you have the energy to stop at Costco on your way or wait until the next day.

Just a warning that if your arrival into HNL is at 4:30 on a weekday you will have some pretty heavy traffic heading to Aulani - just something to consider in your timing and expectations. If that is your arrival at Aulani, then you should be good!
