First cruise - not sure about a trip report **UPDATED:link to pictures pg 6 post#79**

Thank you all so much for the kind words. So happy our daughter has signed on. That would be Aprille - our only child along with her husband Marty - and our pride and joy. Glenn and I are proud that we were able to "grow up and be on our own".

So now it's time to tell you about our dining experience. We were seated at a table for 4 and had no idea whether we would have table mates or not. My heart sank a little when a young couple joined us. But that didn't last long. I swear Susie and Aaron must have come in on a cloud of pixie dust. After a couple of awkward moments we begin introducing ourselves and it was easy. I held my breath for a moment wondering how they would accept us. Turned out not to be a problem. They were in their early 30's and were traveling without their 4 children. We enjoyed hearing about those children. We chatted away for the rest of the meal. I could tell Glenn was comfortable talking to them so that made me feel comfortable too. Susie and Aaron are high on my list of kind and caring people. Turns out Aaron and I are big football fans but not for the same team of course. They were from Seattle and we are from Texas so as you can imagine the conversation got around to the Cowboy/Seattle game. But we are still friends. Our assistant server, Sergio, had already given us menus and taken our drink orders. We looked the menu over and I helped Glenn choose. But then Yordan, our server arrived. I swear the way he swoops down on a table I expected a drum roll and some fan fare. He began explaining the menu and making suggestions and Glenn and I listened carefully but could only understand a word now and then. After he swooped away, we sat in silence for a moment and finally Glenn asked "did he say anything that would make me change my mind?" We assured him it was okay to order whatever he wanted. I don't mean to make fun of Yordan. He was a great server and was easier to understand the next night. He called Glenn Weelyum which is his first name and is what shows on everything - first name middle initial. Actually his first name is William but I liked the way Yordan pronounced it. I can't recall that he called any of the rest of us by our first name so that made Glenn more special. I don't remember much of what we ate except for a mango papaya cold soup flavored with passion juice which was deeelicious. Glenn ordered from the light menu and got steak. Bless his heart, he really wants to be a steak eater but with false teeth and the fact that he has to have it medium well, it's a losing proposition. Yordan was mildly horrified that he wanted it cooked medium well so I was glad I had ordered my meat "medium" as Yordan had pointedly suggested.

After way too many desserts we talked about going to the Welcome Aboard show and I fully intended that I would go after taking Glenn back to the room. But when we got to the room it seemed like a better idea to go to bed. It had been a wonderful day and we were both very tired. The bed was very comfortable the ship was gently rocking as we went to sleep. It was like Disney was rocking us to sleep. I woke about 3 AM as is my custom and headed for the verandah. I stepped outside and watched the whitecaps. The waves were probably about 2 or 3 feet. I don't know how to judge that from Deck 6 but it was a lovely sight. I sat out there for a while and was once again glad that we had that verandah.

This would be Nassau Day and I was out on my verandah early and was able to see land and help guide the ship into port. We made a turn and backed in which made it perfect for viewing the folks coming and going both from our ship and the one next door. We had decided a long time ago that we wouldn't get off the ship at Nassau. I had ordered room service for 10:30 so Glenn could sleep late. Promptly at 10:32 there was a knock at the door. Our breakfast had arrived. It was fine but I decided we wouldn't do room service anymore at least not for a meal. The tray was too crowded and we made a mess trying to not make a mess. My plan for the day was to go up to Deck 9 and check it out. We didn't go to the sailaway party so it would all be new to us. This would be a wheel chair day and it worked well. Most passengers were in Nassau doing whatever so the elevators were easier to access. If I had a complaint - and I don't - it would be the elevator service. I can understand they have to be small but it would be nice if a couple of them were dedicated to wheel chairs and strollers. I discovered about halfway through the cruise that it was easier to go to the Aft elevators - fewer people using them it seemed. But I digress. We got coffee at the drink station and sat at a table to watch the kids in the Kiddie pool. That was great fun. I especially loved a little boy - about 4 I think - in orange trunks. He would get out of the pool and run up the stairs to the slide. The first time I watched and waited for him to come down the slide but it was not to be. He came charging back down the stairs and jumped in the pool. I saw him do this at least two more times and decided that was his way of enjoying the pool. He never came down that slide but he sure enjoyed those stairs. There was a little girl in the Toddler pool that was so cute I took her picture. She would stand right on top of a spout and then be so surprised when the water came shooting up. She did this many times so I have to believe she knew what was going to happen but it shocked and surprised her nonetheless. After a while we moved on down to the Family pool. Lots of cute kids there too. We were ready for a snack so I got some really good veggie pizza for myself and a hamburger for Glenn. We finally made our way to the Adult end of Deck 9 and decided to go in the Cove Cafe. That's a lovely place and we were the only ones that came in just to sit and drink fancy coffee drinks. Several folks came in to order take out drinks. The two bartenders were very nice to us and didn't seem to mind that we sat there for an hour nursing our coffee and watching the big screen TV. Christina came over and showed us how to use the head phones if we wanted sound. It was a pleasant time but we had more exploring to do. I wanted to go up on Deck 10 to verify the location of Palos. It was not easy getting around all those deck chairs pushing a wheel chair but we got there only to turn around and try to find our way back down. I had to ask for help and help is always available it seems. We were ready to go back to our room and watch people returning from the Nassau excursions. We took short naps before getting ready for dinner - and we were looking forward to dinner at Triton's with our new friends.

Speaking of baths, neither of us is very spry and getting out of a bath tub can be difficult and dangerous. I used the shower but Glenn is afraid of slipping and that's a valid fear. After our first efforts I asked Ik, our room attendant about getting a rubber mat for the tub. He looked somewhat panic stricken and asked if the tub was slippery. I assured him it was and he promised profusely he would request a mat. I think it must have been the first time he had been asked for one. When we came back to our room, Ik met us at the door to assure us he had requested the mat. About that time a woman in a white uniform - Ik introduced her as Jen his supervisor - came down the hall taking plastic off a rubber mat. I must have gone overboard in my enthusiastic thank yous because she raised her eyebrows just a little and said "but you requested it". Once again, great service with a smile. So maybe if there is a next time I will request a bath bench which is what Glenn uses at home.

Once more I am digressing. The next chapter will be about our dinner at Tritons where yet another surprise awaited us.

We left our room in time to stop in the Atrium and watch the picture taking with characters. This was dress up night so the characters were Mickey in a tux and Minnie in a white feathery gown. Glenn and I had our portrait pictures taken with the moon and night sky as background. We missed out on the first night picture which was a lighted ship in the background. It was fun to watch the little princesses line up to get their pictures taken. I wish we had lined up a few times and got our pictures taken with the characters.

It was time to join our new friends for dinner at Tritons and we were soon laughing and talking like old friends. We heard a voice from the table next to us saying "I wish we had someone to visit and have fun with". A couple was sitting at that table with no table mates and they were lonely. Susie said "come join us". The head waiter gestured for help and they quickly moved the tables together. And so Lin (short for Linda - there were 12 other Linda's in the family so she dropped the "da") and Andy (retired military) made our table complete. We were soon exchanging information about ourselves and discovered that all us ladies were DISer's. We exchanged screen names and email addresses before the cruise was over. But first, Yordan swooped down upon us and I swear I did hear a faint drum roll in the background. We understood him better this time. He was very good at explaining the menu and making recommendations. Glenn is hard of hearing and depends on me to interpret for him. Once more I don't know what all we ordered but it didn't matter. Oh yes, I ordered lamb because I had never eaten any and I vowed I would do daring things during our cruise. It was okay - tasted kinda like chicken but not something I would get addicted to. Yordan was a little annoyed that I hadn't asked for something else but the veggies were so good I didn't need anything else. We were usually among the last to leave the restaurant and tonight was no exception. We were a party of six now and there was much to talk about. The servers tend to hover a bit. After all, they have to get ready for the next seating. We were all planning to see the show tonight. It was Hercules and I wasn't going to miss it. I was glad Glenn wanted to go. We wound up on the back row with Susie and Aaron and the show was very good. Many people came in late with already cranky children. It was pretty disruptive but I'm not complaining - just making an observation.

It was already past our bedtime so we headed back to our room and were soon sleeping soundly once again. I had worried a lot about being seasick and even got Meclazine recommended by the heart doctor's nurse. I had planned for both of us to take some before we left the hotel but didn't do it and never needed it.

Next time you cruise, and I do hope you do...it sounds like you had a great time... ask about one of the accessible rooms... They may have showers instead of the tubs and it may make it easier for you. I wonder if you could also request the tub bench, if they have them (although the supervisor was so enthusiastic...she may have wanted to jump ship and swim ashore to get you one!!! ;) )

Great Report...I'm enjoying hearing it!!!

I'm loving your trip report! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

What a great trip report! Full of humor, lots of details, from a mature viewpoint, but obviously written by someone who has an inner child alive and well inside her. Thanks for sharing.

Dear friends,

It's time for old folks to get ready for bed. I will continue tomorrow. This has been fun for me and I hope I can remember all the things I want to share with you. Thanks for the suggestion,Tink rules, but Glenn just feels insecure using a shower. The accessible room we had at Boardwalk Inn last May had a very slick floor. If we ever cruise again I will request a bath bench and if they don't have one, like you said, someone may swim ashore to get one. They certainly do try to accomodate.

Talk to you guys again in the morning.

When I first began reading your trip report, I just got this happy feeling inside of me. I only hope my husband and I will still be doing Disney cruises when we are in our 70's and 80's. I am definitely subscribing to your report!:goodvibes

Good morning. I'm back and will hopefully finish this report some time today.

It's Castaway Cay day and we planned to get off the ship for just a little while - mainly to get pictures with the characters. But first I had to be on the verandah early to help turn the big ship around and back up to the dock. There were teams of CM's waiting to drag the ropes ashore and put the loops over the poles. There was a team in red and white for the stern and a team in blue for the aft. Did you know they shoot those ropes from the ship into the water and somehow the CM's are able to get hold of a narrow lead rope and pull the ropes to shore? We were soon secure at the dock and the port side of the ship (that would be me) was the place to be. As soon as the ship was secured at the dock, the walkway was put in place and supplies started rolling out of the ship. First came 6 things that looked like telephone boothes covered in plastic. They were quickly rolled into place behind a table that was already there. I thought what can this be? But my question was quickly answered when the plastic was removed to reveal 6 racks of beach towels. Next came probably a ton of already prepared food supplies. Those teams are like well oiled machines and soon there were several truck loads of food to be delivered. They had small and medium sized fork lifts and didn't waste a minute. Now while I was having all this fun, most of the folks on board were preparing to leave the ship and very soon were doing just that. Glenn was still asleep but he did get up earlier than his usual time because I wanted to eat breakfast at Tritons and they would only be open from 8 to 9:30. We arrived about 9 and there weren't many folks there. Our server - who looked vaguely familiar - was Jose from Peru. I was delighted he was from Peru and felt surely he must know Renato from Peru. Turns out he did indeed know Renato. They are brothers and Renato was a server that morning too. Jose rushed to bring him over and I got a hug. Made me feel like a happy grandmother. Other servers joined our party to take pictures and have a small party. The head server was jealous I guess because he brought another server over and claimed they were twins so I should take their picture too. Our day was off to a good start. I was so pleased we got to see Renato one more time and meet his brother, Jose. We were relucatant to leave but the servers had to get ready for their next meal and we had to go back and get the wheel chair for our Castaway adventure.

It was very sunny and very hot but we didn't plan to stay outside very long. We knew where the photo ops were and that was all we wanted. First the shot with the ship in the background and then on to find characters. And we found our favorite characters, Susie and Aaron, first. They were waiting to get pictures with Jack Sparrow for their pirate loving daughter and were first in line - so we became second in line. Jack Sparrow may look menacing but I know a little secret - he is a kind and caring man. He walked thru the sand to accompany Glenn and I back to the picture spot and insisted we hold on to him. We got a great picture. Next came Goofy and another great picture. Finally Mickey and that was good too. Susie and Aaron had walked along with us helping with holding our stuff and the wheel chair. Glenn got out of the chair for all the pictures except the ship background. We knew other characters would be coming and going but we were tired and hot and wanted to go home - our room on the ship. Susie wanted Aaron to help us back to the ship but we insisted they go on to the adult beach where they planned to lay out in the sun all day. Not my idea of fun but then you already have an idea of what our idea of fun is. We headed for the verandah as soon as we got back and rested for a while. We decided we didn't want lunch after polishing off our Eggs Benedict for breakfast so I ordered lemonade and oatmeal raisin cookies from room service and then we took a nap. As soon as I woke up I headed for the verandah to watch people returning to the ship. I thought we would sail at 4:30 but turns out that is when everyone is supposed to be on board. Turns out they weren't. One person came straggling in about 4:45. I'm not sure if it was his mother or his wife but I'm pretty sure he got a chewing out. I watched a large truck come in to unload used beach towels. Many CM's jumped in the truck and started transferring the towels to the now empty racks and they were back on board very quickly. We sailed away promptly at 5:00 and it was time for another dinner. This would be Pirate Night.

You're cruise sounds like an absolute dream. So glad that you encountered such magic at every turn!

By now you won't be surprised to hear that we didn't plan to go to the Pirate Party and we didn't. But we did enjoy our Pirate Dinner at Tritons. The menus were great souvenirs and the servers were a delight in their red vests, white shirts and red head bands. I do believe this was our best meal of all. I wish I could tell you what it was but I don't recall all of it. I had a chicken dish that was delicious. Once more we were among the last to leave the restaurant. We wanted to see "Golden Mickeys" so headed directly to the theater. I was a bit startled when we came to a red carpet with black clad paparazzi on each side taking pictures. I thought we should go to another entrance as this must be for VIP's. But of course, this was part of the show and we were the VIP's. Our usual last row seats were awaiting us so we sat down to wait. The row in front of us held 7 little children who were being entertained by 2 CM's whom I figure must work in one of the kid's clubs. They kept those kids laughing and giggling until about the time the show started. One CM said okay kids it's time to get ready and they left. We were wrapped up in the show and about the time the Snow White segment came to "Whistle While You Work" I just knew there had to be an appearance by 7 dwarfs and I immediately knew who they would be. Sure enough, being assisted up the stairs at the side of the stage were those 7 little people with long beards attached to their faces. When the first little person got on the stage she developed stage fright and wanted to back out but Snow White grabbed her up and danced around holding her while the other cast members took the hands of the other six little people and that was about the cutest thing I ever saw. That made the show very special for us.

We sat on our verandah for a while and wondered if we would hear the fireworks. We could certainly hear the music coming from Deck 9. We were soon asleep and didn't hear the fireworks.

Tomorrow is "at sea" day and we have a reservation for brunch at Palos. I made the reservation for 10:30 for a special reason. It would be both breakfast and lunch for us. My hope was that we would consume less food that way but that is not to be when you dine at Palos.

We were a bit apprehensive about Palos. As most of you have discovered by now we are simple folk. Thoughts of the Beverly Hillbillies crossed my mind as we entered the restaurant. But no problem. Why should I have worried when this is a magical trip. We did see the dress code enforced. It is cruise casual for brunch but no shorts, swimsuits, etc. We had a short wait and saw a man come in wearing shorts. A manager type bent over and very quietly said something to him. He turned and left, losing one of his flip flops as he rushed out the door. His wife stayed but shouted after him to tell everyone else in their group about the dress code. So this made me feel pretty good about us simple folk. At least we do some research before such a big adventure. We were soon seated at a window table and our server, Cecilia, was explaining the process. After a tour of the buffet and a look at the menu we filled our plates from the buffet - but not too much. Glenn let me tell him again what each dish was and put a small amount on his plate. I was happy to try the fennel salad. I have seen fennel used so much on the food channel but our supermarkets don't stock it - for good reason I'm sure. We have a very good supermarket close by but they don't have much, if any, demand for fennel. Did you know there is a male and female variety of fennel? The male plant is flatter and the female version is rounder and better. I swear I saw this on the food channel. But once more, I digress.

We enjoyed our first round of the buffet and I was proud we hadn't overdone the portions. I opted to do another round and Glenn decided on an omelet. He also decided on chicken catiatorri (I'm very sure that is not spelled correctly but hopefully you know what I mean). I frowned discreetly at him but he chose not to look in my direction. But I must say, it was delicious. I ordered the pizza because it had been highly praised on the Boards. Somehow I thought it would be a slice of pizza but silly me. Ceclia put a whole pizza in front of me. I ate 2 slices and she wanted to package up the rest for me to take back to our room but I declined. Hope I didn't hurt her feelings. When it came time for dessert I told Glenn I would bring him one and he agreed but Cecilia overheard and said she would bring us samples of all the desserts. And by golly she did. Fortunately, they were in small serving dishes but my oh my - we were already so full. She explained each one and turns out at least 3 of the 7 had liquor in them. Glenn chose something chocolate and I just had to try the liquor ones. In case you haven't noticed, we don't drink alcohol - me for all my life and Glenn for many years. So I indulged with my tiny spoon - one bite of each and hoped I wouldn't stagger when we left. I didn't or at least I hope I didn't. Sometimes it's hard to tell at my age.

We had a great view of the ocean but best of all, we had live entertainment. Right outside our window were 3 young men in bright yellow coveralls painting the railing.

We had a nice visit with Nelson from the UK. He was wearing a beige jacket but there was no title on his badge. I think he might be a manager in training. But he was very informative and pleasant. He explained decks A, B, and C to us. Deck A is entirely machine room, B and C are crew quarters except for the bridge crews. They have quarters on Deck 7 to be closer to their jobs on the bridge. Officers that have private rooms can bring their wives with them at no charge. Others can bring their wives but pay a discounted price for a room. Oh my, I'm doing it again - digressing that is.

It was a happy experience but, of course, we ate too much.

Aunt Jo,
Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us!
I can't help but think of my grandparents, who would also enjoyed watching the painters from Palo!

We decided to go to Deck 9 without the wheel chair. We were going to sit a lot and people watch. We started at the kiddie/toddler pool and worked our way up to the adult end. I hadn't notice before but Cove Cafe had comfortable padded chairs out on the deck. We settled in a shady place and quietly enjoyed the view - both of the ocean and of people. We were so happy to see a couple of large chipmonks come from the elevator area and proceed in our dicrection. I had my camera at the ready and got a couple of pictures before their handler insisted on taking a picture of the 4 of us. I will get my pictures on Wednesday and have high hopes I have some good ones. I used disposable cameras and have had good luck with them. I never considered getting a digital camera because Aprille was always with us with hers.

We never even considered eating again until dinner at Animators Palate. We weren't hungry then either but how can one resist when Yordan explains the deliciousness (I made up that word) of each item. I thought it would be our last meal with our new friends but turns out we all ate breakfast at 6:30 the last morning. I had planned to go to Beach Blanket and get a banana and maybe a muffin and let Glenn sleep as long as possible. But I changed my mind and decided to come down for breakfast. Susie asked Yordan if I could take a plate to Glenn and he said of course. Turns out Glenn didn't want to miss anything so he got up and we all had breakfast together. We exchanged screen names, real names and email addresses before Lin and Andy left to drive to Pennsylvania (the weather report wasn't good) and Susie and Aaron headed for WDW on the Magical Express. Glenn and I were going to the airport to await a 3:00 flight.

I had packed and checked both our one suitcase and one of our carryons so I only had a very small carryon to get our medications and other last minute items including a nightgown and a pair of pajamas. I couldn't make it all fit so I sacrificed Glenn's pajamas.

We weren't really sad as we left the ship - matter of fact we were very happy - not to leave but that we had enjoyed such a great time. I did notice that Glenn grabbed ahold of one of the Mickey hands that was waving us out the door and clung to it for a moment.

We were immediately met by a young porter who quickly found our bags and took us through customs. The woman glanced briefly at our form. I had declared $150 worth of pictures and that was all. We didn't buy even a single souvenir. She put the form in the box and waved us through. We were taken to the Continental check in and let me tell you that is great. We checked our bags, got our boarding passes and were on the bus in minutes.

There will be one more chapter and that will be later today.

Oh.... I hope some how you can post some of your pictures!!!
