First Alaska voyage makes the news

Most Alaskans refer to the contiguous United States as "the Lower 48," " Down South," or "Outside." So we get it. :) We're a State alright, but we're big and far away.

Flying back from Alaska and then to have to return for court would be expensive.

Yes. One of my brothers got himself into trouble in Fairbanks while helping our father take care of our uncle's estate, and he chose to stay there instead of leaving them going back for his court date.

Invariably a local would ream them out and remind them that Hawaii was a state.

Whereas the Hawaiians I went to college with felt themselves to be very much NOT just a state, but from a place that had been its own country and should be treated very differently. (then again, students at a liberal, liberal arts, college, tend to be reactionary, yes? and, because PacNW is so different, despite Hawaii being the 4th most highly recruited state for the college at that time, half of the freshman ended up going back home before sophomore year...just too different in every way, even to the foliage)

Most kanaka wouldn't even respond. It was the Kamaʻaina that would give them heck. :-)

And there was THIS guy earlier this year...not on a Disney cruise, but really it's been a strange year so far.

I had not heard that story. Very tragic. It creeps me out to imagine having been on the same cruiseship with someone so cold blooded and dangerous. Obviously I feel horrible for the victims family, especially the daughter who found her parents. But I also feel bad for the killers parents and sister -- to be looking forward to a family cruise, only to discover your child is a monster. I think I would rather die than live with the knowledge that my child could do such a thing.

When we lived in Hawaii we would hear someone say "When I get back to the states" and just cringe. Invariably a local would ream them out and remind them that Hawaii was a state. :-)
Living in New Mexico, I had more than one conversation with phone agents at catalog companies that yes, NEW Mexico was party of the United States and, in fact, they could deliver to me. The Internet has really helped cut down on those interactions. It's not because people are smarter, but I can peacefully choose NM from the drop down with no one hassling me. :hippie:

Here's what's amazing- Disney's Alaska cruise is EXPENSIVE. He paid the price to cruise and steals electronics that probably didn't cost the amount or more than the cruise. Normally the really expesive equipment is behind glass.
REALLY DUDE! SERIOUSLY!

What, was he going to pawn the stuff once he got back to Michigan? Can you imagine how embarrassed his travel companions must be. I hope they continued to cruise without him.

What struck me, beyond the Disney puns and the sheer stupidity of the act, was that you can be held WITHOUT BOND for second degree theft in Alaska! Pretty tough stuff!

Something to consider for all cruisers is your own property and security, do not leave anything on beds or near the doors.

I recall last cruise in our Cat T we were allowed in at 12.30pm we were told its OK to go under the barrier. We did and was in our stateroom.

Now its near the Midship elevators.

Our stateroom host saw us and said whilst it was OK to be in the room could he finish off with our castaway club gifts etc. He propped the door open.

We were inside at 1.30pm with the door open. Suddenly at barrier drop I heard a man say, lets go in and have a look at the suite, started to come in I saw him he turned around and went.

How many other cruisers think its OK to go into other cruisers staterooms to have a look if there is an opportunity and the door open.

So do not leave valuables near the door.

How incredibly inappropriate to go in someone's stateroom without an invitation!
