First a Little Pomp & Circumstance, then a Whole Lot of Disney Dining! COMPLETE

Your mouth to God's ears Barb!!! I thought for sure you were going to say you were planning another trip! You did a lot of work...even if your 'boss' doesn't appreciate it as much as the rest of us!:rotfl:

Oh, Denise...what are your trip dates and who's birthday are you celebrating?

That list is awesome, I am so impressed. I have 'bookmarked' the post so I can come back and follow it to people's trip reports/food reviews.

As for myself, I will definitely be posting a trip report and I may well include a dining review. You may have to wait a month or so for mine though so I hope you have got someone else lined up to entertain you.

Thanks Joh! And yes I can wait a month or so, but please, please do a dining review. :thumbsup2 I know I can count on DDW to start his reviews on the 21st and he is going for a week this time so he should have a nice long report! :cool1: Hopefully long enough to last me until the late August people return and start their reports. Oh, and of course there is iloveeeyore and family who are at WDW right now.

Oh, and just so you know, there will be no talk of fanny packs - it's not THAT kind of a trip report :rotfl:

DARN!!! :lmao:

And mamaboogie (or a similar screen name) is there right now for 3 weeks!! That should be an awesome review!!!

Thanks for putting together the list! I love dining reports and most of the ones I've been reading are coming to an end!! I hope to have my plans mostly finalized by the end of next week!

Your trip plans seem to be coming together quite nicely, Paula! I am quite envious, as I sooo love the F & W Festival. I have been there for 4 of the last 6 years, so it is really going to be rough on me to not go this year. I'll be counting on you and the other Oct./early Nov. people to report back about all of the delicious food and beverages. :thumbsup2

 Hi livinlife25! Thanks so much for following along and taking the time to post a comment. I hope you enjoy your dinner at Artist Point. I hope to return there soon...whether with my family or not! ;)

And when are you going in January? I would like to add your trip dates to my list (on Post 489) if you wouldn't mind??? Along with any other details you would like to share. :thumbsup2

It will be January 5-11. Me, dh, my toddler, sister and mother will be staying 2 nights at AKL, then 4 nights at WL. Crossing our fingers that we get free dining and my current reservations can stay intact! :goodvibes

Oh, Denise...what are your trip dates and who's birthday are you celebrating?

Definite arrival date of 11/29. Departure date is up in the air due to deciding on longer vacation @POR vs shorter @BC. Any opinions? Another concern with the longer trip DS will be out of school for 7 days. I can live with that though!:rolleyes1

We are celebrating DS turning 10 and me 45 (shhhh!). We both have birthdays in early November but this timing worked better.

Barb you have taken on a huge undertaking with such skill!!! I love the dining review gatekeeper term too! :cool1:

Hope your "boss" doesn't mind your second job here! :rotfl2:

NOTE: If you have a trip to WDW planned in the next six months and might be doing a Dining Report, please make sure I have you on my list.

Via Napoli - The Pre-Review

BACKGROUND: My first time dining at Via Napoli was just three months after it opened, in November 2010. As soon as their menu appeared on the internet, I knew exactly what I was going to order when I dined there. During my trip to Italy in 2009, I tried this simple, yet wonderful combination for the very first time.

Italy3.jpg

Prosciutto and Melon (Cantaloupe) - Rome 2010
(and check out the plate of tomatoes and fresh mozzarella in the background, YUM!)

Now although my Italian grandmother had introduced me to prosciutto not long after I cut my first teeth, she never once suggested that I eat it with anything other than a piece of Italian bread and a slice of Provolone cheese. :lmao: So once I discovered how well this combination of flavors worked together, I never passed up the opportunity to have it. Therefore when I spotted this pizza listed on Via Napoli's opening day menu, I knew then that it would soon be mine.

IMG_3953.jpg

Wood Fired Authentic Prosciutto e Melone Pizza Napoletana - With Prosciutto, Cantaloupe, and Fontina, Mozzarella, and Pecorino Cheese.

Now, I first must say that this pizza did not look at all like I was expecting. I had imagined this pizza to be topped with "bite-size" pieces of prosciutto and cantelope. But as you can see, the reality was quite different. And so while the taste of this pizza was pretty good, it was such a pain to cut and eat that it was not very enjoyable. However, although this pizza was a disappointment, the other one we tried was much better...

IMG_3952.jpg

Wood Fired Authentic Pepperoni Pizza Napoletana - With Spicy Pepperoni, Tomato Sauce, and Mozzarella Cheese.

I would have given this a solid Good "Wendy" rating. While it was definitely not the best pizza I have ever had, as I usually prefer a Chicago-style deep dish pizza, it was pretty good for a pizza of this type. The highlight of our meal though was actually not the pizza, but this dessert...

ViaNapoli5.jpg

Zeppole Di Catarina - Ricotta Cheese Fritters, served with whipped cream, chocolate sauce

Wow, these were yummy, especially when covered with that rich chocolate sauce and whipped cream!

Oh, and speaking of zeppole, last Spring I happened to see these on the Dessert menu of another fine dining establishment which specializes in Italian cuisine...

18f7a05d-1.jpg

Zeppoli (spelled with an “i”) - Soft, traditional Italian doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar, served with chocolate sauce for dipping.

These actually look and taste kind of like a beignet, although not the Café du Monde kind…which are awesome, but maybe like the kind you get at POFQ??? Not sure though, since I haven’t yet had the privilege of trying them, but they are definitely on my “list”. :thumbsup2

Anyway, does anyone know from what Italian restaurant these zeppoli are served???

If you guessed Olive Garden, then you would be correct. :lmao: And while these are not quite as good as Via Napoli’s, as they are not filled with ricotta cheese, they are pretty tasty and much more readily available, since there are Olive Gardens everywhere. Which actually is totally fine with me, because I happen to really like Olive Garden. I enjoy going there for lunch and having their unlimited Soup, Salad & Breadsticks. I especially like this soup…

olivegardenchickengnocci.jpg

Olive Garden's Chicken & Gnocchi Soup - A creamy soup made with roasted chicken, traditional Italian dumplings and spinach.

Ahem…but getting back to Via Napoli now. DH and I plus our DS returned to VN last fall. On this second visit, the zeppole did not disappoint and were again very good, but that wasn't the case with our pepperoni pizza.

ViaNapoli2.jpg

Via Napoli Pepperoni Pizza #2

Now I must admit that this pizza looks pretty good, but sometimes looks can be deceiving. Because unfortunately, the crust was not cooked enough on top and therefore would have been demoted to only a "Mr. Smee" rating.

DS actually wanted something other than pizza, so ordered this…

ViaNapoli1.jpg

Chicken Parmigiana - traditional preparation with tomato sauce, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, and served with roasted potatoes.

Unfortunately this was also a disappointment, probably because he compared it to another Chicken Parmesan dish that he had recently had…

GiacomosChickenParmesan.jpg

Giacomo’s Chicken Parmigiana

This was from a wonderful, little Italian restaurant in Boston’s North End called Giacomo’s. And when I said little, I meant just that because it probably has maybe 8 – 10 small tables at most, placed very closely together (kind of like some of the WDW restaurants, and maybe even worse). Consequently this popular restaurant always has a line of people standing outside its door, like this (or sometimes longer)…

giacomosline.jpg

But DH, DS, DD2 and I absolutely loved this place, and even ended up eating there a second time when we were back in Boston to fly home from our New England vacation. Every single dish that we tried there (both times) was either a “Peter Pan” or a magical “Tinkerbell”.

Here was DD2’s favorite dish…

giacomos-pumpkin-tortellini1-1.jpg

Giacomo’s Pumpkin Tortellini

And here was mine…

GiacomosLobsterRavioli-1-1.jpg

Giacomo's Lobster Ravioli

The ravioli was delicious and the creamy garlic sauce with diced tomatoes was superb. This definitely put the similar dish that is served at Coral Reef to shame. DH also got a ravioli dish here that he really enjoyed, the Butternut squash ravioli with a prosciutto, mascarpone cheese cream sauce that had diced asparagus. (sorry no pic) In fact he liked it so much, that he ordered the Autumn Squash Lasagna that was on the CA Grill menu when we there just a few months later, thinking it might be similar in taste.

CAGrill6-1.jpg

California Grill’s Autumn Squash Lasagna – Nov. 2011

Sadly, he was quite mistaken and this lasagna turned out to be rather gross. And as much as I love CA Grill, I must admit that this dish was a failure. :sad2:

But my oh my, how did I get so far off track??? :rolleyes1 You’d think I was trying to stall or something, wouldn’t you? :rotfl:

So stay tuned for Lunch #2 at Via Napoli – the Actual Review to find out the answer to these burning questions…

1) Would I again order my usual of Pepperoni pizza and zeppole? ;)

2) Would the girls enjoy their first taste of Via Napoli?

And most importantly,

3) Would we finally be served by a cute Italian waiter? :lmao:
(I forgot to mention that our Tutto Gusto waiter was again an older Italian gentleman. ;)).

Before I start my review, I must share with you that yesterday after posting the Pre-Review, I went back-to-school/new apartment furnishings (for DD1) shopping with my three kids. And you will never guess what I had for lunch???

989a888c.jpg

In case you don’t recognize this, it is a bowl of Olive Garden salad and a breadstick. This plus the Chicken & Gnocchi soup, totally satisfied a craving that I suddenly had yesterday for some reason??? ;)

But anyway, I now have a question from DD2 to pose to Linda or any other readers from the UK. You see, she is thinking that someday (due to the line of work she is interested in doing) she will need to live in either NYC or London. So her question is...do they have Olive Gardens in London? Because if they don't, then that would definitely tip the scales in favor of New York! :lmao:

Okay, now on to my review of our…

Lunch #2 at Via Napoli

Following our shared 3-course lunch at Tutto Gusto, DD1 started whining about having to eat again. But I would have none of it that day, our last full day at Disney World. And so we made the long walk from one bar/restaurant, across the country of Italy to the other restaurant to have our 2nd lunch of the day. We must have burned up at least a calorie or two in doing so, right? :lmao:

We were seated in one of the booths along the wall in the main room of the restaurant, where there is a big communal table…

b3586063.jpg

And behind me (remember this for later ;)) along the back wall are the volcano-named pizza ovens…

IMG_1112.jpg

Stromboli, Vesuvio, Etna and…um, not sure about the name of the one in the lower left-hand corner??? ;)

We were soon greeted by our server, and guess what???

Yep, he was young and cute! Third time’s a charm and Italy finally comes through. :thumbsup2

Okay, enough about the eye candy (for now anyway), let’s move on to the real food.

So I bet you were thinking that I probably got the pepperoni pizza again, weren’t you? Well, you are sooooo very wrong because this is what we ordered to share…

621ac225.jpg

wendy-1.jpg
Pepperoni and Spicy Italian Sausage Pizza
($18 for the Individual-size Pepperoni Pizza plus $3.50 for the additional sausage topping)

Ok, ok…so you weren’t "completely" wrong, but I bet the addition of that sausage was quite a shocker. ;) But anyway, I’m happy to report that this pizza was again a solid, good “Wendy” and maybe would have even gotten a “Peter Pan” if this hadn’t been our second lunch of the day. :upsidedow

Oh, and by the way, DD1 and I each had a glass of Rosa Regale along with the pizza.

IMG_1115.jpg

clippetersitting-1.jpg
Ahhh yes, Rosa Regale...the Nectar of the Gods. :cloud9:
(This was $11/glass)

Now of course for dessert I had to have this again…

42fa6d4d.jpg

clippetersitting-1.jpg
Zeppole di Ricotta - Ricotta cheese fritters, served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce - $10.00 (worth every penny)

And now for a closer shot…

e272f08a.jpg

DD1 and I shared the zeppole, which were delicious once again. But DD2 wanted to do her own thing because she spotted this on the dessert menu…

IMG_1121.jpg

wendy-1.jpg
Chocolate Gelato
(Like at Tutto Italia, this was $9.00. A little overpriced for a couple of scoops of good, but ordinary chocolate gelato.

And so our overall rating of this meal was:
clippetersitting-1.jpg
Very Good

And now I will leave you with this one last picture, which was taken during our meal at Via Napoli by DD2. But first I must tell you the story behind it. You see, about half-way through our lunch, DD2 pulled out her camera and began taking pictures…only she wasn’t taking them of any of our food. She seemed to be aiming the camera at something behind me so I thought she was taking the pictures of the pizza ovens that I had requested. But then DD1 (who was sitting beside me) started smiling/giggling and seemed to be posing for the pictures her sister was taking. Now I thought it a little odd that DD2 would suddenly develop an interest in taking pictures of her sister, but then the zeppole was brought to our table and I had more important things to think about. ;) So I actually didn’t think about this again until we got home and I started looking through DD2’s pictures from the trip.

That is when I found this (plus a few more similar pics)…

IMG_1119.jpg

Yep, that handsome young gentleman pictured between Stromboli and Vesuvius just so happens to be our waiter. :rotfl2:

NEXT UP: Dinner at Narcoossee's

You are a sweetheart princess: for keeping us updated on dining reviews and TR! I love love love it!

Yes we are going back again, Oct 18-28 and I will probably start my review a few days before we leave...dont want to jinx myself and start too early. This is a huge birthday for me, 40 (OMG) and I just have to spend it in WDW! And of course it is gonna be LIVE! :thumbsup2 Cant let you guys down right :lmao:

Dec trip is gonna be a blast, the 6-9, and while it isnt going to be live it is going to be HUGE....we are meeting KatMark and her husband and their son and his girlfriend there so I will have 6x's the dining reviews and pictures! They have all promised that I can photo their food and take notes on their descriptions :rotfl:

We plan on heading back, just Todd and myself, Feb 15-18 and again in May for Todd's big 4-0.

Need to put that AP to good use this time! :thumbsup2

I just read your latest update and you made me soooo homesick...I grew up in the North End and when I go home to visit we always eat at little hole in the walls like Giacomo's. To this day the NE is where my mom goes for all the Italian specialties....trust me when I say you do not get anything like this at all in FL.

Had to giggle at the Olive Garden reference...that is Todd's favorite place to go. See, before the boy met me, the authentic Italian chick that I am, he thought Italian food was a plate of pasta with some red sauce on it...but I introduced him to the real deal...yet he still loves OG :rotfl: I am a sucker for their breadsticks with alfredo sauce ;)

Wow Nicki, you just totally made my day...and probably several others here. We have not two but Four MickeyNicki reviews to look forward to in the next 9 months!!! :cool1:

On my way out now, but will get your info updated on the list tonight. Thanks! :thumbsup2

I think this is one of my all time favorite dining reviews - so much fun to read! But I am reading this right before my lunch and I want to go pig out now! :lmao: I know people make fun of Olive Garden because it's not authentic Italian but I still like it! I just love it for what it is. ;)

DD and I are doing Via Napoli during our upcoming trip so I'm excited to read your review (even though you probably won't order things without red sauce like Eilee will!). I'm going to be all over the zeppole!

I love VN! It's probably my favorite! I can't wait to see if it redeemed itself and if you got the girls to try it! By the way, the ugly sundae (i forget it's Italian name) is even better than the Zeppole.

Oh my, this is just the pre-cursor to the Via Napoli review and my mouth is watering already popcorn::

I always wonder why the prosciutto slices are massive on the pizzas. I think I may know the answer. If you slice them smaller, they tend to end up like crispy chips. Also, if they place the slices last, after the pizza is already done then, this might be it?

I just love the pictures of Italy, mention of an Italian grandmother, AND the fact that you still like Olive Garden.

Love the pre-review! DS and I really like Olive Garden (DH, not so much!). No, it isn't North End Boston or Little Italy New York italian, but it is good for what it is! DS loves that chicken gnocchi soup. I can't get enough of the Zuppa Toscana! Oh, heaven in a bowl for me!

Looking forward to the actual review!

It will be January 5-11. Me, dh, my toddler, sister and mother will be staying 2 nights at AKL, then 4 nights at WL. Crossing our fingers that we get free dining and my current reservations can stay intact! :goodvibes

Got it, thanks livinlife25! :thumbsup2

Hmmm...that's a tough one, as I really like staying in the Epcot resort area because it is so close to my favorite park. But if forced to choose between a shorter stay there or a longer one at POR, I think I would have to choose the extra time at WDW. :thumbsup2

Barb you have taken on a huge undertaking with such skill!!! I love the dining review gatekeeper term too! :cool1:

Hope your "boss" doesn't mind your second job here! :rotfl2:

Yea, hopefully it won't be a problem since I'll have some extra time on my hands with no WDW trip to plan for awhile. :guilty: But on the bright side, it looks like I'm going to have lots of Dining Reports to keep me occupied. :woohoo:

:ssst: And what he doesn't know won't hurt him. ;)

My whole family absolutely loved Boston and would like to return there sometime. I'll try to remember to get your advice next time so we can try another place or two, besides returning to Giacomo's for at least one meal. :thumbsup2

I think this is one of my all time favorite dining reviews - so much fun to read! But I am reading this right before my lunch and I want to go pig out now! :lmao: I know people make fun of Olive Garden because it's not authentic Italian but I still like it! I just love it for what it is. ;)

Awww shucks, thanks so much for the kind words, Tracy!

I love VN! It's probably my favorite! I can't wait to see if it redeemed itself and if you got the girls to try it! By the way, the ugly sundae (i forget it's Italian name) is even better than the Zeppole.

Hmmm...the ugly sundae??? Sounds great. ;) :rotfl:

I always wonder why the prosciutto slices are massive on the pizzas. I think I may know the answer. If you slice them smaller, they tend to end up like crispy chips. Also, if they place the slices last, after the pizza is already done then, this might be it?

Hmmm...you could be right about the prosciutto, Rosey :scratchin But why couldn't they have at least cut up the cantaloupe into bite-size pieces??? I just don't like to work that hard to have a slice of pizza. :lmao:

I just love the pictures of Italy, mention of an Italian grandmother, AND the fact that you still like Olive Garden.

:wave2: Thanks smiths02 and thanks so much for joining in!

Heck yea...the Zuppa Toscana is great! :thumbsup2 It used to be my favorite until DD2 talked me into trying the Chicken & Gnocchi. Now my heart belongs to it. :lovestruc

And I'll try to get the Via Napoli review written and posted tonight. ;)
