If we were to watch the 8:40pm fireworks from near the mainstreet station, would I have enough time to get to the 9:15 WOC show?

Yes, but it won't be great.

You will see the fireworks from a good spot, but be a bit far back to see all of the effects perfectly. The benches up in front of the railroad station do fill up earlier than most of Main Street.

The problem really is the fireworks run for a while. So you will be going out the DL gates at about 9pm. Then arriveing at Paradise Pier at 9:05. No good viewing will be left in Paradise Park. You may have to watch from behind the park near LM, or the side or back.

It would be much better to watch the WoC at 8pm, from a spot inside Paradise Park against a rail with a Show Pass. This will get you at least one great view of one of the shows. Than you exit as soon as it ends, to get to the front of the departing WoC crowd. Go right to DL and take any spot for the fireworks you see which will probably be around Town Square of the back of Main Street. Try to find a spot that lets you see the Castle and half of the Matterhorn if possible.

I suggest watching the 8:00-8:30 PM (WoC is a little under 30 minutes long) showing of World of Color and then going back to Disneyland to watch the 8:45 PM fireworks. As long as you briskly head on over to Disneyland Park, you should have no problem watching the fireworks from Main Street. On Christmas day, my family decided to eat dinner at Denny's right after the 8:00-8:30 PM WoC show. Denny's is much farther away from Paradise Pier than Main Street USA. After a good 5 minutes inside Denny's, we heard the fireworks over at Disneyland Park. So I think it would only be a 5 minute walk from Paradise Pier to Disneyland Park, and another 10 minutes once you're in to find a nice spot to watch the fireworks.

Thanks everyone, that sounds like a much better plan! For WOC we will get FP's of course, and my grandmother needs an EVC and so I'm hoping that the accessible area of whichever color we get won't be too crowded and we can get a decent seat. Are there any last minute tricks for finding an ok spot (with little children still being able to see) for the fireworks?
I'd love to do these on separate days, but the days we are going in January, there is only one day in which both of these will be running. And then they aren't on for the other days :(

For WoC there are HCA areas at the top level of each viewing zone. So that should help you get out and on your way.

For Fireworks HCA areas exist. It will be really full when you get over to DL so it will be take what you can get. No trick that is helpful.

Also remember that when watching the fireworks from Main St. Station, the Christmas tree will block some of your view!
