We found out before we sat down to dinner tonight that my DH's 23 yo cousin lost his eye today because of a fireworks accident last night. He was in surgery for 7 hours today.

I can't imagine how he must feel at this point. He was a very good looking young man. I am not sure what other damage was done to his face in addition to his eye.

The accident happened at his sister's house during the family get together.

So much for being 23 and invincible. :(

Oh, your poor cousin.

My kids have never played with fireworks. I have a scar from a sparkler that will be with me all my life and don't care to have them have the same fate.

One of our neighbors is a nurse. Her kids are allowed to hold sparklers if they wear oven mitts. :p

I am so sorry to hear this! :( When I was about 12, a firework went off in my hand. :earseek: I remember it hurting so badly, yet it felt numb at the same time! I have never touched one since then and despite my kids always begging us to stop in SC to buy them, I will never allow my kids to touch anything stronger than a sparkler that needs lighting! ::yes:: The kids enjoyed throwing 2000 poppers and lighting more than 200 sparklers last night! :hyper:

Sending prayers for a speedy recovery.

Oh my gosh, thats awful! I'm glad that we only did sparklers. Hope he recovers soon!:D

At the party I was at last night one of the girl's hair caught fire! We quickly had it out and it was only singed but it could have been a lot worse. No fireworks for me.

The Saturday before fathers day, we had a huge fathers day party, complete with LEGAL (they're illegal in VT) fireworks, we had all the permits, had a pyrotech shoot them off, etc...

the main show went great, then there was a few 1" shells left, my bil and his best friend from grade school went to the pit to shoot them off, and they threw a shell into a shoot, which was live, (unknown to them) and it went off, my bil pulled his friend back just in time, it hit him on the eye brow...he will have plastic surgery, can't open the eyelid more than 60-70%, is still blury etc..

And my inlaws wonder why my children have never even held a sparkler...geez, I wonder!

I'm so sorry to hear this, Wendy!!:( I will keep him in my prayers.

SEE!!!? I worry about my 20-something sons becasue of stuff like this!!

I do hope that the cousin recovers well. He probably has a very tough road ahead.

That's a shame. Hope he recovers well beyond the eye loss. How terrible.

As a kid (teen), I used to always have them (illegal they were/are). I had a pocket full of them, and while walking down the street with my buddies, one behind me through one in the air and it went in my pocket. All went off, burning my leg quite bad. I went home, did not tell my folks at first, but then got scared as how sore it was getting. They took me to ER, docs said had I not come in I probably would have lost leg from poisoning. As it turned out, healed fine, not even a scar, but, what could have. They are so dangerous.

Again, RUDisney, hope he does well.

I am sorry to hear about the accident. I hope that his recovery goes well! What a terrible thing to happen and what a price to pay.

We were lucky that the kids in our neighborhood were not seriously hurt by the fireworks. They were being extremely careless. I had to wonder where the parents were. They were throwing them directly at each other and just being plain stupid.

Well, they did learn a tough lesson. They were shooting them off in the common ground behind my house, in my yard, on the the street along side the house. We asked them twice before to move it up to their houses. They would leave for a short while and always end up back here. Well, things got out of hand and one of their fireworks punched a hole in our siding. While grateful no one was hurt like you nephew; I was very upset about the damage done to the house. The neighbors are taking care of the repairs; and they all apologized. All the boys came to pick up the mess on the 4th. Still it put a damper on our holiday. I think fireworks should be left to the professionals. Kids have no buisness playing with them especially unsupervised.

That is so terrible.. Two years ago my brother got hit right above his right eye with a bottle rocket, and luckily he only had to have four stitches...no permanent injury. Of course, he had his glasses on.. I shudder to think if he hadn't.

My thoughts are with your cousin and your family.

My heart goes out to your cousin! What an awful tragedy.:(
