Fires, smoke how bad?

As we are arriving on Sunday, I was concerned with the news about the LA Basin being blanketed by smoke by fires in the Angleses Forests. The article said there is visable ash in the air, smoke smell and the sky is orange and hazy. They said schools are canceling band and football practices. They are advising those with allergies and respiratory problems to stay indoors throughout the weekend. The firefighter quoted said it will be a long smokey weekend and will get worse before it gets better with highs near 100 and little to no wind. They said the LA Basin is filling with smoke and it will just sit there. Without trying to sound silly, is Anaheim in the LA Basin and how bad is it??????????????

No smoke or fires near DL today. The fires are usually in the foothills and canyons, but DLR is in a very urban area and is not as affected by smoke/fires. When they talk about the "LA basin", this is not necessarily that near to Anaheim. My DW and DS went to DCA for a few hours today and it was very hot (100 degrees) but no hint of smoke.

The LA Basin has far more obstructions to the ocean. DL has no mountains to the west and truly has better air quality. Besides, DL is not anywhere near the fires. Don't worry. Go, and enjoy yourself. You'll be fine! :thumbsup2

Oh thank God for all you people who posted! I just read this and was getting really worried. Every time I go to DLR I get sick with respiratory infection (I have asthma and bad allergies), so when I saw this I freaked. I'm supposed to be there next week... I hope the fires go away...

No smoke, but it's HOT! :scared1: Record temps yesterday.
OC Register said:
On Thursday, the temperature hit 100 or higher in several areas of Orange County by 11:30 a.m. and remained in that range until late afternoon. Temperatures hit 109 degrees in Silverado and Modjeska canyons, and 105 in Santa Ana. The weather service says it will be at least that hot today and that the relative humidity will fall below 20 percent. But winds are expected to be light, preventing forecasters from issuing a red flag fire watch for Orange County.

Yes, it's been very hot the last few days. 100+ in Anaheim. Temps will remain high for another day or two, but should return to high 80s/low 90s by Sun. Bring your water bottles, sunscreen, and hats!

We're flying down tomorrow too!

Not looking forward to the high temps in Anaheim though..especially since it will be in the 50s when we leave Seattle. I imagine the heats gonna slam us in the face when we step out of the airport in Long Beach. :sad2:

This fire definitely isn't as bad as some in the past where ashes would rain down on you. It's ridiculously hotter than it needs to be, but other than that, you should be fine.

We just left the other day and Disneyland was not affected.
Do prepare for heat though. It's hotter than blazes. Like--Africa hot. Not for the faint of heart. It's only gotten worse since I was there too, and I felt like I was about to melt into the pavement.

I drove on the freeway by La Canada today and the smoke was scary. But down in OC, you are fine.

Just HOT.

We're driving in from Vegas. Are there any areas on the way from Vegas to Anaheim that we should avoid due to the fires?
Also, how's the humidity? I can handle the Vegas dry heat, but if it's hotter than hades and humid, ugggghhh -- I might as well go to WDW and be miserable in the humidity! ;):lmao::rotfl2:

Humidity is about nil which is making it harder for the fire. But for your comfort in oc it will be nice and dry. I am the same way Cant take humidity. Not sure about the drive.

Assuming you are taking the 15 from Las Vegas, then to the 60 and 57 you don't have anything to worry about, you will surely see the smoke, we live in the high desert along the 15 and can see it, but just got home from DLR and it didn't affect our drive at all.

We are driving down on I-5. I seem to recall that goes over some mountains on the way into LA. Does it go through the affected areas/would there be any problem driving through?

Thank you so much! I appreciate the info. I was really starting to get concerned because I wasn't exactly sure where the fires were. Normally we take the 15 to the 210 or the 10 and then to the 57. Are the fires affecting those freeways (the 10 or 210)? I don't think we've ever taken the 60...
Thanks for any info!

Hey Pixie Dust. Coming down the 5, from Bakersfield area, AT THIS POINT, you won't have any problems. The fires are all to the east, though you'll have a great view of the smoke. As you pass through Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley, the smoke could very easily be at ground level, very much like fog, but burns the eyes, makes it hard to breath. The further South you get, the better it should get. However, this is all assuming no more fires pop up. The Grapevine (the mountains North of LA you referred to) are FAMOUS for burning and I'm amazed they're not blazing right now.
