Fire Pit....anyone have one?

We are planning to buy one of those patio type fire pits they sell at Target (and many other places too I am sure). The kind with legs, like a table, and it is off the ground.

My question:
Can you put these on the lawn and use them, or do they need to be on a patio or something? We have a very small patio and we are going to have about 10 teenagers over Friday night, so I wanted to set it up in the middle of the lawn with chairs around it, but I wasn't sure if these things had to be on a patio (like is it safe to be on the lawn?)

So if anyone has one or used one, can you let me know what you think?

Check with your city to see if it's even legal in your area. Any and all open fires are illegal in my city and they will fine you if the local police see those fire pits in your yard. Two of my neighbors had them and both were caught and fined.

we have ours in a sandy beach area on our property

Our neighbors put theirs on the lawn all the time.
They move it out there when they want a fire and then after it cools, move it back on the patio so they don't kill the grass.

We have one on our patio, but used it in the grass before the patio was built, with no problem.

We are supposed to call the fire department before we use ours to get permission. Sometimes it is just too windy or dry to use it.

We use ours in the grass all the time. Once it cools down we move it back to the patio. It has never messed up our grass or anything. We've never called the fire dept. Half the people in our neighborhood have them so we figure its fine.

Two people on top of the hill here have them - and they use them on their lawns..

Just to be safe, I would have a hose handy in case of stray sparks..

I agree, check with the city to see if you can burn. I doubt it should be a problem but every place has their own codes to live by.

On that note we have a small table fire pit with large tiles around it so people can put there drinks on. We've had in on & off the grass with no problem but then again we never leave it unattended. They're great to have on a nice cool night or just coming out from our pool. Enjoy!

This is the kind I want too. So we can sit drinks on it. Thanks everyone. I will make sure to have the hose hooked up. We are going shopping tonight for one. Half of our neighborhood has these, so they must be ok.

That is the kind we have. Ours is on the patio right now. The one we had previously was on the grass. What I would do was get a small bucket of water and pour it under the pit to keep the dry summer grass from catching then fill the bucket and put it under one of the chairs around it just incase.

Our kids love the fire pit for making Smores.
