Fire Escape Ladders

Can anyone recommend a safe and cost efficient fire escape ladder for a two story home? We really need to purchase some of these and the recommendations/prices I am finding on the web are all over the place. I thought that some wise DIS'ers might have the real scoop.

I have seen the Kidde brand for years, J, at hardware and home improvement stores. A well known brand in home fire safety.

We got one from home depot. I don't remember exactly how much. We got the ladder & fire extinguer for abt $100.

If you just ask a clerk at home depot, they'll show them to you. They are designed to be kept in a box, and be removed very quickly w/out tangeling.

Every 2+ story home should have one.

Ours lives in a box under my son's bed. We all know it's there, just in case we ever need it. I think we paid about $100, but I don't remember what brand it is.

I ordered one from One Step Ahead. They have a website. I believe it was around $80 or so. Very sturdy and easy to use.

They're really sturdy but light weight so a school age child could pick it up and use it. Also they are compact enough to slide under a bed for easy access. I hope we never have to use them but it really is piece of mind knowing they are there.

We purchased a Kidde ladder at Home Depot several years ago. I think that it's time to remind James that it's in his room. All of the other bedrooms in our 2 story home have at least two exits that lead to our lower roof. The ladder provides a second exit for James' corner bedroom.

When I was a child, my parents had a braided rope upstairs. My siblings and I were old enough to climb down the rope. I remember trying it out once.
