Does anyone have any recommendations, or Heaven forbid, ever had to use one that was successful?

I'm not sure what to look for but I need to purchase a couple for my upstairs children's rooms?

Thanks in advance!

I have no idea - but I wanted to say I'm glad you're doing this. I used to beg my father for one when I was a kid. We practiced fire drills all the time but he never bought me one, and to this day I always tell him my fear of fire is because he wouldn't by me a ladder :) LOL and I ended up marrying a fireman!

:cheer2: for you!

We have them. It is good to keep one under each bed. Pricey, but worth it. Keep one in the attic (if you have one), as well. You never know.

You are a smart cookie :thumbsup2 to be thinking ahead. Hopefully you will never have to use one, but it is a wonderful thing to be prepared.

You can buy these at most hardware stores::::

That is the same one we have. Thank goodness we have never had to use it,but when we moved from a split level to a two story walk out, it was one of the first things I bought.

Thank you everyone....

There is a little girl in one of my DD's classes that has had her house (well 2 separate houses) burn down - freaky coincidence, no negligence... and understandable, this little girl talks about her fear all the time.

Lately I've noticed a couple of houses that have burned and realized we've never fully addressed this with the kids so now's the time!

Gris Gris - how do you "start" a fire drill? I wanted to do this on this upcoming weekend as well.

Thanks, I'm off to the store!

Maybe some of the firemen on this board will chime in but we were told NOT to get one for our kids by a fireman friend. He said that they will take the kids too long to set up and get down that they may lose any chance they can get to get out of the house. That could have been just his personal opinion about them so maybe some of the other firemen will comment.

I just went through a program at work called CERT (Corporate Emergency Reponse Team). Part of the training was general fire safety. It was taught by a corp. made of Los Angeles fireman.

They recommended that you should have fire escape ladders for each bedroom and you should practice fire drills periodically. God forbid you would not be able to get to your children in the middle of the night because of flames/smoke in the hallway.

I learned a lot of good information in this course.

We had a place in the front yard that we were to meet at, during a fire drill or a real fire and we knew the route we should take. Then my dad would give us a "heads up" that the fire drill would take place on a certain night but he wouldn't tell us the time (it was never when were sleeping though!). He'd light a match, blow it out and let the smoke get to the detector. We'd hear it and get out of our rooms, down the stairs, out the front door and to the meeting spot.

So my problem was my bedroom was on the 2nd floor and I asked my dad for a ladder in case I couldn't get down the stairs. But my room had a roof outside the window so that was my "alternative" route out! Dad thought I could jump :) Thankfully, we never had a real fire.
