According to local news reports, the crew on the Magic discovered
a fire in the rear smoke stack at 5AM on Thursday morning. The ship sounded 7 blasts of the ship's horn and ordered all passengers to their lifeboat stations. The fire was extinguised by 6AM. The ship which was 200 miles from San Juan, did not send a distress signal and reported that other ships were minutes away, if needed.
This was the first fire on either Disney ship. The journey has not been delayed and the Magic will be back in port on schedule.

Hi 1disfan! We had a thread about this yesterday and all is fine with the sailing and the next sailing. Thanks for the update. :)

Spent about 10 minutes this morning on line looking for any news links on this - only found two ( the prior one Orlando Sentinel one mentioned on another thread, as well as a TV station -- channel 6 in Orlando). Nothing really new, the latter link did mention that a woman on the Magic e-mailed her father after the fire, stating that because of it one deck of the ship (which wasn't stated) had to be evacuated, and that passengers on that deck were not allowed back into their cabins for "a few hours." Bottom line: given this incident isn't getting very much media (because of no injuries, no schedule changes and apparently quite limited damage in areas passengers really don't see much less use) I'm getting the sense that as Disney is stating this won't affect future cruises.

...........This was the first fire on either Disney ship........

This can't be true. On 9/22/01 cruise we had a small fire on the Magic near the shops. I smelled the smoke and was blocked from going that way. I saw crew members dressed in fire gear.

Robin, CarolAnn (or any Cruistoberfester) - Please confirm. It was a fire, right? Or am I dreaming??

There was a fire in a deck 8 equipment room beneath a pool on the Dec. 22 sailing of the Magic. Rooms in that area on deck 8 were evacuated, but not the entire boat. My mother and daughter were evacuated at 2 AM and went to the life boat stations. They were not allowed back in their room for the remainder of the night, and the next day there was rehab work going on in the hall and in the rooms near the equipment room.

Tuli,
Didn't that end up being a broken fan belt in the ventilation system?

TuliRose, I think Wind is right. If I remember correctly it happended while in Port (Engines off) and it was smoke but no fire.
Thank goodness no one was hurt in this latest event. I hope all goes well with the next cruise as well, and the problems are fixed for everyone.
Wonder how much of a discount will be offered for the inconveience?
I'm sure some will scream for a full refund!

I know nothing about cruising or cruise ships, since I'm a newbie BUT..... Don't they have to check out why the fire started and try to prevent it from happening again, I feel they over use the ships by never resting and them. I may be totally wrong since I know nothing about ships.
When do they have time to maintain them?

Mjasp, maintenance on the ships is ongoing, and every 2-3 years the ships go into "dry dock" (they are taken out of service) for major maintenance work. The Magic's last dry dock was in December 2000.

The ships have state-of-the-art fire safety systems and a well-trained crew. They most definitely will investigate what caused the fire and they will take any steps necessary to prevent it from happening again. Safety is taken VERY seriously on the ships. :)

Thanks guys. At least I know I wasn't dreaming and something did happen.

Jealousy makes me not visit this board too often. But happy you guys are looking forward to another September cruise. May it be merry!

When we were booking a future cruise abourd the Magic, the calendar had two weeks this September scheduled for dry docking from way back. We were told this could change, but before the fire that was the schedule. It is amazing the amount of work they can do to revarnish, paint, and repair areas here and there during a regular cruise week! There were yellow people everywhere, even before the fire.:)
