Finding Dory

I looked for a thread about this movie but didn't see it so I apologize if I missed it.

I saw this movie, in the 3-D version, on Friday. I was very disappointed in it! Even with the 3-D affects, the whole story line was kind of boring. It certainly wasn't close to Finding Nemo.

A couple of people got up and left before the movie was over. Did anyone else see it and what did you think?

I also didn't think it was as good as Finding Nemo, but that's one of my all-time favorites, so this was never going to live up.

I just saw it today and felt the same. It was cute in its own way, but I was a little disappointed. It was kind of sad and dark.

I enjoyed it and liked the message of the movie and how it kind of touches on what it's like to either be a parent of a child/adult with a mental illness or a disability and what it's like to be an adult or child with a disability and mental illness.

Just saw it today and I really loved it. It was a great sequel. It may not be as good as the first but it was pretty darn close. It was also just "lighter" in general. No parents died. No children were lost. Just easier on the feels.

It was also nice to learn about Dory. She was such a strong influence in the first movie but we knew nothing about her. I had some good laughs and left happy. Really enjoyed the whole thing.

Yes, that is what they were going for and that's why I LOVED it! Finding Nemo was basically kids with physical disabilities. Finding Dory is kids/adults with mental disabilities. This movie needed to be made!

I have a very, very, very minor learning disability. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in high school. After I was diagnosed my dad went off the rails. He went around telling everyone how I'll never be able to hold down a job or be a "real" adult. Suddenly I was incapable of doing anything or thinking for myself. Even though my dad's gone now, there are still people that think I belong in a mental hospital. Just because my brain doesn't work the same way, doesn't mean I can't do things on my own.

As a person with a small family, most of whom live very far away, I loved how they showed friends can be family too. I really worked on creating a support system and surrounding ourselves with people we love and who love us. That was a big take away from the movie for me and was a good discussion with the kids after.

We loved Finding Dory, Nemo isn't a favorite of mine (sorry!) so I think I went in not really expecting a sequel or even holding it up to a certain standard.

Oh no! We were planning to see this today, but now I'm concerned. I am all for stigma-busting, etc, but these kinds of movies can kind of ruin the mood of "family movie day" in our family. I'm not trying to avoid emotion but ....My kids were both depressed over Inside Out (actually my older son and I were both sobbing when the islands started crumbling because it was a very accurate visual for the feeling of everything falling apart when you are depressed...he was going through something himself at the time -- very dark and not kid movie like at all). At the same time we love that movie and own it. It is just very heavy in parts for a cartoon movie.

I was hoping for a light family film to cheer everyone up and make us laugh. I know it won't be total fluff, but how "dark" are we talking?

Its breaking stigmas yes, but it's nowhere near the level of intensity as Inside Out is (at least in my opinion) while there are a bit of sad moments they turn into touching ones. I would not compare Inside Out darkness and Finding Dory darkness [because I mean there are some sad parts!] I can send you a PM of some of the sad parts if you don't mind spoilers so you can kind of gauge if it's a good idea to see it with your family.

Yeah, Inside Out is much heavier overall. This one only has moments and they are pretty fleeting.

We loved it for several of the reasons already mentioned - subject matter, learning about Dory's background, a family is what you make it, and for the message that those who love you don't give up on you.

We also loved Piper, the animated short that played before the movie. DD is into birds, so this was a nice surprise.

I liked it enough. Not going to be one of our all time favorites, but I'm a fan of any movie we can all see together. (Ages 6-52)

The original move ended in Australia, and I am thinking Dory's parents are at California.

Does anybody have any thoughts about how this movie might play for a kid who was adopted thru international adoption.
Maybe they are getting old enough to wonder about their bio-parents, where they came from, etc...

I actually really liked it and thought it was a cute movie with a good message. That said, it must have bored a lot of people because the amount of phones and talking during the movie in the theater where I was was ridiculous.

I wouldn't say it's like that because Dory remembers tiny bits about her childhood throughout the movie.

This applies to us, but so far no emotional reaction/questioning has come out of it. We've been through the questioning/wondering before, so maybe it just doesn't need reworking right now. Every child works through things differently and in their own time, though, so you never know.
