FINALLY updated 8/20 - 8 nights of vegetarian dining on the DDP - with pictures!!

spaceacewanabe - Thanks for the great reviews and pictures :thumbsup2 We have reservations for LeCellier and after reading the description of the vegetarian entree, I wasn't sure if it was something that I would like. I'm just wondering, was the tofu soft? I like tofu, but not if it's too mushy. Also, in the picture, it looks like there is a large ring of onions under the millet that look almost raw. Is that what's at the bottom of the dish? Thanks.

Thank you for the reviews and the pictures! I'm a vegetarian also and I'm really enjoying your reviews. :)

Hi Kayeliz,
The tofu was pretty firm...not crumbly or anything for sure. The onions were grilled and tender, and you can see all the onion there is in the dish (there was some more millet and roasted vegetable nage below them). My sister doesn't care for onion and was able to take them out without any trouble.

Hope this helps! It really does taste better than it looks or sounds!

We had 2 CP dinners planned, since we loved it last year. We figured if it was good on Monday, we'd go again, and if it disappointed, we'd see what else we could get.
Of course, it was outstanding on Monday (better than last year, actually), so we kept our ADR. We tried to move it later at Guest Relations that same day, since we'd ended up having a full (albeit not very good) lunch at Tusker House that morning. No luck...so we stuck with our 3:30 ADR.

We checked in at Crystal Palace around 3:20 and were seated immediately. Our server today, Christine, was OUTSTANDING! She didn't hover, but somehow she managed to have fresh drinks before the old ones were completely gone, plates cleared as soon as we got up or pushed them aside, etc.

We were seated in the center today, under the stained glass windows along the roof. It was nice to sit somewhere new, but I prefer a seat along the edge by a regular window. We did have a character wrangler who WAS hovering over us, and he was kind of strange. He was trying to give me camera advice, which he may have intended to be pleasant, but he was very insistent that none of the pics would turn out if I shot towards the center (the area that was sunlit from above). I tried to tell him that my camera has a backlit setting and a light reader; I don't think he understood. He made us all kind of uncomfortable because he was really hanging around and watching us. It was a might bit creepy.

Anyway, we had a lot of the same things, plus some salads & desserts we didn't get to on Monday:

2 pieces Coconut Flan, 2 Chocolate Pecan Bars, Red Velvet Cheesecake

The flan was great again. The red velvet cheesecake was good but nothing special. The chef removed the tray of pecan bars shortly after I took them, and while chocolate + pecans is always a good thing, these did taste like they'd been sitting out (because they had been!). I would definitely recommend them if they're fresher, though! If they're old, you'll have to evaluate how important chocolate and pecans are to you ;)

34786%3C25%3B%7Ffp34%3B%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C56nu0mrj

Corn Fired Spoon Bread, Veg. Frittata, Grapes, and Salad in foreground

This was one of the pictures I took in the "wrong" direction! I thought the sunlight actually looked pretty nice. This was my sister's plate. She mentions that the grapes were refreshing. On Monday, there was no vegetable frittata. My mom & sister LOVED the frittata last year and loved it again this year! I'm not sure if it's clear in this picture, but the "mixed field greens" today were mostly iceberg :scared:

34786%3C25%3B%7Ffp348%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B77%3B%3A6nu0mrj

Here are some more salads (not sure what was what anymore).

34786%3C25%3B%7Ffp355%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C5%3Anu0mrj

Coconut Flan, Broccoli with Puri Puri, Corn Fired Spoon Bread, Jasmine Rice with Fruit and Veg. Curry

34786%3C25%3B%7Ffp355%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B77%3B%3A%3Anu0mrj

Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli with Puri Puri, Balsamic Roasted Veg., Corn Fired Spoon Bread, Fruit & Veg Curry Strawberries Coconut Flan Salad Center: Veg Frittata

34786%3C25%3B%7Ffp352%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C5%3Cnu0mrj

Garlic Mashed Potatoes (NOT good, unlike Monday), Corn Fired Spoon Bread, Jasmine Rice with Fruit & Veg. Curry, Cheese Pizza (fresh!)

As you can see in my list, the mashed potatoes today were AWFUL! I don't know what they did to mess them up, but I had one bite and left the rest. They were fabulous Monday, but something was not right and not good tonight!

I think they may have been having some freshness issues...I had been looking at the cheese pizza and concluded I didn't really want to waste my appetite on it. One of the more senior chefs noticed and told one of the younger chefs that the pizza should have been replaced long ago and that it looked bad, that they don't let things get that way there. I think they may have been training some younger staff? I don't know. I felt compelled to take the pizza when they replaced it for me, though, and it was actually pretty good!

So, I will definitely still return to Crystal Palace for dinner in the future, but I probably don't need to go twice in one trip. It was still good on Wednesday, but definitely not on par with Monday (foodwise...service-wise, it was great both times).

Hi Spaceacewannabe,
Thanks for answering my questions about LeCellier! I'm still on the fence about this one. Thanks also for the review of Crystal Palace - this is another one of the restaurants on our plan. The pictures are really appreciated. Everything looks really good. Just one question here - what is puri puri?

That is the question! I'm not sure (other than that it's not an animal product!). The broccoli was a little spicy, so I'm thinking some sort of spice. It was good!

I'm so glad there have been so many vegetarian reviews on here lately. In March there will be 2 adult and 1 child ovo-lacto vegetarians on our trip so the reviews make trip planning easier.

I'm disappointed they changed the sandwich at Tusker House. That sandwich was incredible. I could have eaten it every day on our last trip.

Looking forward to more reviews. :thumbsup2

yeah, i have the same question. and i looked up the recipe, and that dish is actually called "Broccoli with puri-puri and key lime ponzu". that brings up a whole 'nother issue -- what's ponzu??!!

as far as i can tell, the puri-puri is the name of the sauce...since Puri is in India, is it kind of an Indian-inspired sauce?

OK...i looked up ponzu in Wikipedia. it's a citrus-based sauce used in Japan.

so is this an Asian-Southeast Asian-Floridian (key lime) dish or what?

You know, I was never interested in eating at CP (not a big Winnie the Pooh fan) until this thread!

Mmmmm, that sounds pretty good! Thanks for the info, llqool.
Spaceacewannabe - thanks for the reply. I'm looking forward to the Coral Reef review - that's another on our list.

I love this report. Sad about the food at Tusker House. I think I may just live on Mickey Bars on our AK days (which will save room for Boma...)

We are going to CP for the first time. I can't wait.

I didn't book Le Cel because I thought it was a steak house... bummer for me.

Do any of you know of any CS that have tofu?

Also I remember we got a veggie burger that was not a boca burger (yuk) at one point last year, but can not remember where. It was more like a Garden Burger.

Thank you for the reviews! As a vegetarian, I have shied away from a lot of buffet lunches/dinners since I have found they usually don't have a lot for me to eat. I have a CP breakfast ressie, but your review and pics make me want to try them for lunch. I am also so sad to hear about the Tusker House sandwhich being replaced. That was one of my favorites. I guess I will just eat a late breakfast then hop to Epcot for dinner when I visit AK.

So we got to our 4th day without a trip to Sunshine Seasons yet! We started our day at the Magic Kingdom for early open and then hopped over to Epcot specifically to eat at Sunshine Seasons.

We LOVED the Veggie Cuban Sandwich here last year (and split it three ways! Eeks!), and this was one of the places we were really excited to eat at with the dining plan.

Here's the sandwich:
347873536%7Ffp34%3B%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B958%3B%3Cnu0mrj

It was DELICIOUS! It has mustard, pickles, cheese (Swiss?), roasted eggplant, zucchini, and red peppers. This is the only time I took a picture of it, but we ate the remainder of our (19) counter service credits at Sunshine Seasons. The sandwich comes with a side if you're on the dining plan (salad from the refrigerated section or bag of chips, popcorn, whatever); the side costs extra if you're paying OOP (btw, chips really taste good with this sandwich ;) )

They also have fancy, fresh made (not prepackaged) desserts (think table service quality on disposable plates):

347873536%7Ffp356%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C65nu0mrj

Fruit Tulip

347873536%7Ffp348%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B958%3B4nu0mrj

Fruit Tulip and Asian Chocolate Cake

My mom LOVED her fruit tulip and ordered it more often than not on return trips; my sister liked hers but not as much as my mom did. The fruit was really nice and fresh (really nice blueberries!). There's kind of a custard under the fruit, and then the shell is like a cookie and it's coated with chocolate on the inside.

The Asian Chocolate Cake was pretty good---not great, but good. It was a bit dry and crumbly (I think this is how it's supposed to be), but I like cake a little on the dry side. Couldn't figure out what made it "Asian" at first, but we brought 2 of these home (figured they'd travel the best, or they would NOT have been what we picked), and after a few days in the fridge here, we could taste the ginger---hence the "Asian."

So...fruit tulip-yes. Asian Chocolate Cake-definitely not the best option here, but still good.

Next up: Spoodles (don't get too excited :guilty: )

We had read some good things about the vegetarian options here, and the appetizers looked so good! So we were really looking forward to this ADR.

We arrived for our 5:30 ADR around 5:20. We checked in...there was a woman being trained who seemed like she might have been friendly had the trainer not been there; the trainer looked at best indifferent and more likely annoyed to have to 1. train the other CM, and 2. deal with guests. So, after a cool experience at check in, we sat uncomfortably for almost 10 minutes before being shown to a table by a (very elderly) man.

So we walked into the dining room, which was empty except one other party, and guess where they tried to put us? Next to the kitchen and a hallway, at a tiny (two person) table. We looked at each other, concurring this wouldn't do (especially in an empty restaurant---which, btw, stayed more or less empty in the main dining room the entire time we were there). So one of us (me, maybe?) asked if there was a different table available...the man (very apathetically) said, "I guess you could have that table", gesturing to the booth across from the tiny table. We still had hope for this place, and the booth was an improvement, so we sat.

And sat. And sat a little longer. Finally, our waiter, Onsi (you're going to want to remember this name), showed up to take our drink orders. My sister and I had vanilla shakes (it's the DDP, we went nuts!), and my mom had iced tea:

347873536%7Ffp357%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95927nu0mrj

347873536%7Ffp347%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C69nu0mrj

Oh, and the empty restaurant:
347873536%7Ffp347%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C6%3Bnu0mrj

347873536%7Ffp348%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95936nu0mrj

We mentioned to Onsi that we were vegetarians, and he sent a chef out. Chef Dan came over and asked if we were vegans or lacto-ovo, and then said, "okay, so we're going to surprise you then?" We'd heard that they like to "cook for you" and make elaborate entrees for vegetarians so we said okay.

We sat awhile longer, wondering when Onsi might return to refill our water (also not icky FL water, btw), bring the famous bread and dipping oil, and take our appetizer orders.

Yeah, that didn't happen. After awhile, Chef Dan came out with an appetizer platter. We thought we'd been talking entree, as there was no need for anything special for an appetizer (they've got, like, 4 things on the appetizer menu!). So, not only were we not on the same page, it was not anything special, nor was it what we would have ordered had we had a chance. In Chef Dan's defense, I think he meant well, but I think Onsi had just kind of thrown us on him.

ANYWAY...what Chef Dan brought was this:
347873536%7Ffp353%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95943nu0mrj

347873536%7Ffp354%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C74nu0mrj

Flatbread - with olive tapanade, red and yellow tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese; Greek Salad

The flatbread was something we would have wanted, and it was delicious. We absolutely wouldn't have ordered the Greek Salad (which we got two orders of, btw), and we'd have been right---the Greek Salad had WAY too much pepperoncini (but tasty olives, per my mom). It may have been good with more cucumber and tomato. Oh, and did I mention our water was STILL empty as we were eating this pepperoncini?

Eventually another waiter (we were not in his section, he was just kind of watching and looking sad for us) noticed that our glasses were empty and we never got bread, so he gave us refills and brought us bread and oil:
347873536%7Ffp347%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95948nu0mrj

I think it was over 30 minutes before we saw Onsi again. He finally returned, after Chef Dan served us our appetizer and not-our-waiter gave us bread and water, to ask if we'd be having pasta for our entree. I politely told him that we thought that was what we'd talked to Chef Dan about, and that the appetizers were a surprise. I also asked if we could have the Mediterranean Dips since the Greek Salad was really not what we'd had in mind. He said of course, we could have whatever we wanted. I mentioned that we'd read that they'd do a "vegetarian tour" of the sides for an entree. He said okay, so you want the platter. Okay, sounds good. He then disappeared again.

At some point in this, Charlie, one of the hosts, came over and informed us that they had a large party in the next room and so they were a little swamped. Not in a "sorry we're not taking care of you" way, but in a "be glad you're getting our attention at all" way. So, he refilled our water and cleared my shake and my sister's shake (which she hadn't actually finished yet). We asked about refills, which I assumed there weren't, and there weren't (although no one had told us that, as they had in other restaurants---I don't think they should assume you know as I probably would have been disappointed had I not known). Anyway, he talked about a refill for my mom's iced tea...then asked if we wanted refills? We asked again if they were included...no, they're not. I think you had to be there, but this was just a WEIRD conversation. I can't really express to you what an absolute jerk Charlie was, but he was condescending and we had the distinct impression that being women wasn't helping us any.

Anyway, eventually someone (don't remember who) brought out our platter and said Chef Dan would be out to tell us what was on it. We waited a few minutes and decided to dig in. Here's the big platter, after we dug in (sorry, forgot!):
347873536%7Ffp352%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C78nu0mrj

Sweet Potato Fries, Hearts Palm Salad, Gnocchi, Roasted Vegetable Stew, Mushrooms with Fennel & Spinach (?), Toasted Couscous

And on my plate:
347873536%7Ffp353%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B9594%3Bnu0mrj

Mushrooms with fennel & spinach, toasted couscous, sweet potato fry, roasted veg. stew, hearts of palm salad, gnocchi

Chef Dan (who really was nice, and, along with the not-our-waiter who gave us water and sympathetic glances, made the experience not entirely awful) came out and told us what was what.

We ate and it was all pretty good. The gnocchi was not nearly as good as I expected, nor was the toasted couscous. Hearts of palm salad was good but not super-flavorful. The mushrooms and fennel were good, and I don't usually like mushrooms (although I think this dish may have been the source of some digestive problems later on). The sweet potato fries were wonderful and we'll be making them at home. The vegetable stew...was okay, but not all of the veggies tasted fresh (at ALL).

So, it all seemed decent while we were eating it, but later that night, I felt just gross and couldn't imagine eating any of it EVER AGAIN. I had a killer headache :headache: (which I never get in Florida---really ought to move there!) and my stomach felt just awful, and this was the only place I really felt truly crummy after having eaten in  But it could have been the stress.

It's hard to say whether it tasted good at the time or if we just thought it did because Chef Dan was one of the few CMs there that treated us like valued guests, and we wanted to like the food because we liked him.

So, you'll notice Onsi never showed up with the dips.

Anyway, Charlie came back to take away the platter and take dessert orders. The dessert platter is not included here...again, not surprised, but this will become of interest later on.

After we asked how different dessert options were, Charlie gave us some rather schmucky, condescending answers (the creme brulee comes with a "cookie" rather than "biscotti"...I think maybe you needed to hear the inflection on that---I swear, I'm not just enjoying my whine and cheese :drinking1 here).

So, we got 2 vanilla bean creme brulees with berries and "cookies" and one Chocolate Apricot Cake with Raspberry Sorbet.

347873536%7Ffp34%3B%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95955nu0mrj

347873536%7Ffp356%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C79nu0mrj

347873536%7Ffp355%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B95959nu0mrj

The creme brulee...what can I say...the raspberries were delicious! My mom thought the creme brulee was good, although not nearly as good as Charlie represented it as being. I thought it was actually kind of on the bland side. Probably one of the weakest desserts of the week (with the possible exception of Boma). The cookie/biscotti was a sad piece of pastry, whatever it was. It wasn't offensively bad or anything, it was just not worth the calories I'm sure it had.

The chocolate apricot pistachio cake...what can I say...the raspberries were delicious! According to my sister, the chocolate apricot pistachio cake was "too sweet." I had a bite and that was more than I needed. She says the sorbet was "fine. That's something that's kind of hard to screw up."

So NOW Onsi reappears to bring the bill and get our card for the dining plan. Guess what was on the bill? The Mediterranean Dips we never saw. And an extra order of iced tea, which we never even ASKED for. I might have thought this was an honest mistake if I hadn't been so negatively impressed with the less-than-dynamic duo of Onsi & Charlie up to this point...I suspect that they were trying to up the tip (since it's included) without being TOO obvious (each little bit adds up, you know). We didn't waste time dealing with this at Disney, but we will be contacting someone (???) now that we're home.
Additionally, if they can charge those extras that we didn't even get, why couldn't we have gotten refills on the shakes, or have been offered the chance to switch to a regular beverage (since they charged Disney for one anyway!)? Why didn't we actually get the dips? And why, if they can ring that stuff up, couldn't we get the dessert platter, especially since we had a cheap entree & appetizers? Now, did we need any of this stuff? No, not really, but if they CAN ring things up to benefit themselves, why not let the guest have these things?
Sad thing for them is, we WOULD have left an extra tip if we'd had good service, which would have been more than the extra $1 they got by adding things we didn't have to Disney's tab.

Also, this was quite possibly the LOUDEST restaurant we went to all week (including our THREE character meals), even though there were hardly any other diners.

So, in conclusion: Charlie was a total jerk. Onsi seemed like a nice enough guy, but he didn't give a rip about doing his job. Not-our-waiter was going to do his job and their jobs well, even though there was no gain involved for him. Chef Dan was very nice; we saw him WAY more often than our waiter. But we'll still not be going back, possibly ever, and Boardwalk is no longer on our "want to stay" list.

Oh, and a little note: there were bugs being born in one of the rusty faucets in the restrooms there, too. I don't think there's an emoticon for that one.

The boat couldn't leave fast enough:

347873536%7Ffp34%3B%3Enu%3D3253%3E8%3A9%3E74%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3233%3A53%3B87%3C7%3Cnu0mrj

You'll see where what would have been Onsi's extra tip went in tomorrow's reviews, when we receive impeccable service from Lisa at Chefs de France.

I am sorry your dinner at Spoodles was so bad. I had really hoped that it would be very good. I am sooo thankful about these reviews. I have ADRs at Chefs de France...so I am excited about eating there. Hurry up with these reviews....I am starved!!!!

These reviews are GREAT!!! I'm a vegetarian too (lacto-ovo, no gelatin or other slaughter-by-products) and I love hearing the perspectives of other vegetarians who dine at Disney.

Anyway, DH and I went to Spoodles once a few years ago and I thought the food then was pretty good. I remember getting some type of pasta with mushroom cream sauce for my entree and I'm pretty sure we had an appetizer, but I can't remember what it was. I do remember that the restaurant was pretty empty (although they made a big deal about us not having reservations) and that the server was annoying. Every time she came to clear our plates, she made a point of commenting on the fact that we finished our food. One time she said to me "Did a tiger come through here and eat your meal? You really cleaned your plate!" Without getting into too much detail, I am very self-conscious about eating in front of strangers and having her comment on my "clean plate" made me increasingly uncomfortable. DH wanted to stick around for dessert and coffee, but I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

We haven't been back since, but every year we walk past to look at the menu and debate whether we should give it another try. Reading your review sealed the deal - we won't be going back anytime soon.

We are big fans of Boma. When we ate there in March, TJ (the sous-chef) surprised us with an amazing vegetarian entree platter (enough food for 4 even though it was just the 2 of us) and a huge dish of deep fried oreos for dessert. I'm planning to email him before we go down in September (for DH's Birthday) to see if he's working that night.

Don't you love it when you stumble across a CM who really seems to love what he/she does and spreads oodles of pixie dust in the process? :cloud9: Can't wait to hear about Lisa from Chefs de France - that's one place we haven't been yet.

I thought LeCellier had a Butternut Aquash Risotto?

I was really looking forward to trying it

Thanks so much for the great descriptions and photos!! I can't wait to read the rest!

Again, thanks for your awesome reviews!!! They have changed our plans drastically!!!
Love the pics...they are the real decision cincher. Bring on the reviews!!!!!
