A 34yo man fell overboard from a Carnival Sensation cruise ship and was rescued an hour later by the Disney Wonder!

It's breaking news on the tv. I don't have an internet link yet, but I'm sure something will pop up soon.

It's nice to get some good publicity for a change!

What's even more "magical" is that he was completely fine. He needed no medical attention. This guy now has quite a story to tell his grandchildren. And I always have to wonder, how do you fall off a ship anyway??

I was on a non Disney cruise ship last year and saw the Disney Wonder sail by in the opposite direction ... I was also tempted to jump and swim towards they Disney Ship!

My brother in law was on a Disney Cruise a year or so ago. He was playing basketball at midnight and all of a sudden, the ship stops and there are spotlights sweeping the water. Someone had fallen overboard from another ship in the area. Another ship picked him the guy up, but my BIL said it was the eeriest feeling looking into the black water for someone.

One of the passengers on the Wonder tweeted during the rescue. Apparently he saw it all from his balcony.

I really love his last tweet, about 3 hours ago:

1st time Disney (or other) cruise. Impressed by rescue, but now expectations are higher. iceberg or giant squid attacking ship next cruise?

Edited to add - the man from the Carnival ship actually jumped overboard after arguing with a woman.

A passenger aboard the Sensation said the man could be heard arguing with a woman.

“He threatened to jump, and she said, ’Go ahead,’ and he did,” said Marie McDonald, who was vacationing from New York. “Then we heard the man screaming, ’Help! Help! ' ”

Also noted in the second article:

The Sensation stopped abruptly as its crew threw markers into the water and tried to launch a rescue boat, but the smaller vessel tipped over, sending its gear into the water and its crew back onto the cruise ship, McDonald said.

Good thing Disney was able to come to their rescue!

I can't imagine what it feels like when a cruise ship that size stops "abruptly." It must still keep moving a while because of inertia.

That is just a bizzare story! Threatens to jump overboard, she says go ahead and then he does... Clearly not a well thought out plan to end an argument lucky for him the Disney ship could haul him out of the water. Glad he was physically fine and perhaps got a little "consult" while he was at the hospital. How do you go back to your friends and family and explain that "Well, I thought she would stop arguing with me if I threatened to jump overboard but she took me up on the idea and well, didn't want to go back on my word and all, so I plugged my nose and jumped!"

I've been on the Sensation. I'd probably want to jump if I saw the Wonder heading past, too.

More info on the Carnival ship's rescue attempt (bolding added by me for emphasis):

The rescue operation began about 11:15 p.m. as the Sensation sailed toward its Port Canaveral base.

The Sensation was about 30 miles off of Port St. Lucie when witnesses heard the man jump from the balcony of a stateroom into the water, according to a statement issued by Carnival Cruise Line.

The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter and two boats, and the Sensation launched its own search.

But the Sensation's attempts made little headway, McDonald and passenger Michael Huggins of Lakeland said.

The crew launched a rescue boat, but its sailors forgot to untie it from the cruise ship, Huggins said. The rescue boat tipped, filled with water, and never joined the search, passengers said.

"I was irate," Huggins said.

A second rescue boat never launched, despite complaints of passengers, said Huggins. The Sensation's search lights were weak and crew members aimed flashlights at the water.

How interesting. Our local news here had a story on last night about it, and they are reporting that he 'fell' overboard.

Reading the story definitely makes me feel safer sailing with DCL than Carnival. It sounded like a Benny Hill sketch with people still tied up trying to sail off to rescue the jumper, the boat filling with water and then they eventually gave up. How do you give up? It says allot about the character of the Wonder Captain and her crew. It also says allot about the crew of the Carnival ship.
