Foobs,
Looks like we leave the UK for Orlando just a few hours before you travel.
I've been in Orlando for New Years, in early Jan, late Jan and early Feb, It's true you might get the odd day when the day time temperature might not get into the 60's, but that is failry rare - just look at the archive of records on weather.com for proof of that. At night time you could also find it gets down to around freezing - had that one time myself - but again thats very much the exception rather than the rule.
I had one occasion while at Busch Gardens in January when, having gotten drenched doing one of the flume rides, the air temperature wasn't high enough to dry off our wet clothes and we had to buy sweatshirts. It wasn't cold as such, just not warm enough to dry our stuff out unless we'd sat in direct sunlight the whole time.
The average daytime high for Orlando in Jan is 71, the average low is 50.
I'll be very surprised if the majority of days there at that time dont allow me to be wearing shorts and a T shirt during the day, with jeans and a light sweater being pressed into servive for the evening. mind you, I've also had it where it;s been plenty warm enough of an evening that I 've been able to stay with shorts and T...
And Shortbun, dont leave your swimming trunks at home, you'll be very unlucky if you dont get a chance to make use of them. I've had 80's during the day time in January, you'll be glad of having your cossy if we get lucky. I also expect to be able to go to Blizzard Beach during our trip...
Yes, take some warmer clothing in case of the weather being less than Floridian, but dont think you'll be in hat, gloves and fleece everyday. I'm taking one fairly heavy fleece, a couple of lighter sweaters and thats about all - I'll be wearing warm clothes to travel to the airport here in the UK and that should be enough for most eventualities.
I guess it's all relative to what you're used to - a Floridian winter day is usually equivalent to a UK summer day, so we're more able to stick with the summer clothing at this time of year than say, a southern Californian.
Even so, you really can expect some really nice sunny, warm days for chilling out (also remember that Dec/Jan are the months of lowest rainfall for Florida). If we do get the bum's rush weather wise, I'd suggest using the poorer days to do your park visits - try to save the better days for that poolside lazy day...
I'm getting ecxcited about the trip now. It's the first time I've done Orlando with kids - my partner's boys, 12 and 10 - and I can't wait to see their reaction to it all.
All our tickets are bought, the condo is all set, got the extra SD memory card for my digital camera (kids first visit means beaucoup pictures !), got my planning aids ready, vouchers & coupons etc, ready to be printed off, and final bits of prep ready to go. I've not made any PS's yet, but we aren't overly bothered if we don't get them done - yes we plan, but I like to be pretty loose about things, exactly for factors such as the weather which might change our plans. The plan for New Years Eve is to go to USF or IOA so I may make a PS at one of the restaurants there, that aside, well probably play it largely by ear.
One fly in the ointment is that I've just this week been placed on insulin for my diabetes. No biggie - I don't like needles but it's gotta be done - it just means I have to get letters from my GP so the airline will let me carry my needles and medication on the plane, get used to carrying glucose sweets about and having sugary stuff available in case of hypo's, eating snacks regularly, yadda yadda yadda.
Nothing can put the dampeners on things though - it's not often I want Christmas to be over, but we can hardly wait for the next 4 weeks to go !!!
