Film/disposable cameras go in carry-on luggage, right?

Just want to be sure that I was right in telling a friend that film/disposable cameras should go in her carry-on luggage, right? Isn't the xray machine used for checked luggage damaging to film?

Yes carryon. I also suggest she have it hand checked. I take mine out of the canisters and put in plastic bag/canister in one bag film in another. I put write used on one bag and when I am on the plane I put film back in canisters. I then put my used film in the used bag. If your film is 800 or up this will protect it I have never bought film less than 800 speed. If your film goes through the xray machine to many times it becomes grainy or unprintable I was told. I have had all film and cameras hand checked since I read this on these boards.

Continuing on with fran's post... film speeds below 800 ISO will not be harmed by the xrays used at security. Most people use 200 speed or 400 speed film, as both are more or less all-purpose.

eta: Your friend (or anyone) can request hand-inspection of film so there's no risk of damage. Tell her to be polite, but firm if necessary - I've had TSA Agents tell me 800 speed film won't be damaged. I don't trust that.
Also tell your friend to be sure to WAIT for the hand inspection! I completely forgot the first time, until I was on the plane, that I'd left my film!

The x ray effects are cumulative. So I would ask for a hand inspection or buy your film when you get to Orlando. Take some pre paid mailers with you and then you don't have to worry about your exposed film being damaged. They can be waiting at home for you.
