I'm not sure what board to post this on, not a tip but maybe I can get some! What does everyone do with their film? I hear that the scanners at the airpost can ruin your film? Also what about your cameras digital and 35 mm? I'm a total scrapbook junkie so ruined film would be a disaster for me!! Also, I'm debating about taking my viedo camera too any thoughts on that? TIA!:earsgirl:

Everything I read says do not put film in your checked bags anymore as the scanners will ruin the film. Supposedly the carry on scanners are not as strong but me, being the paranoid about my film I am, I will ask to have my film hand checked. I think I will put the film and digital cards in a baggie for that purpose. I think the cameras, being empty, will be okay to scan. I would do the same for video cartridges too.

Maybe some more experienced airport people will have more ideas.

I never had a problem with the film (sometimes I forgot it in my bag). I was also told one time after I had pulled out a baggie full of film that I didnt need to do it. I think its ok as long as its not a high speed film. However, Ive used digital for the last several years and with security I cant be positive. As for digital cards-never had a problem, same with videos.

I was told if it was over 400 speed film it would be ruined going thru the metal detector. However, I had several disposible 800 cameras go through, and my pictures were fine when I developed them. I think it's a precautionary thing. If you remember to, have all your film hand checked, just to be safe.

My DH and I went to Cleveland last month to visit some family. We had a couple rolls of 400 speed film and were careful not to put any of them in our checked luggage. When we picked up the pictures, one whole roll was blank and about 1/2 of the pictures on another roll were blank. I don't know if we were stupid and don't know how to work our $400 Canon or if it was the metal detectors, but I'm definitely a little paranoid about metal detectors on our upcoming Disney vacation!

Don't put film or cameras into checked luggage. The x-rays for carry on are not nearly as strong as the ones for checked luggage, and it is safe to put film through them. We have put film through numerous times and all pics came back crystal clear. Don't go out and get a lead bag for the film, because then they have to turn up the screener to see into the lead bag, and that WILL damage film. Also, the digital flascards can go into carry on luggage, through the screener just fine. No damage.

Put your film in your carry-on. The detectors they use for checked luggage is much stronger than the one they use for carry-on luggage.

From talking to bagage screeners- film 800 and higher should be hand checked- anything else can go thru the screener, safely. Digital can be screened too w/out a prob. If you want your film hand checked- take it out of the plastic cases and put it in a ziploc. They will(or you will) have to open every canister if you don't. I've sent MANY rolls of film thru w/out a prob.

I've gone digital and my digital can goe thru the carry-on scanner w/o problem.

My daughter still uses film, so she packs in it a large baggie in her carry-on luggage, pulls it out when we get to the scanner and asks for a hand-check.

The TA agents might gripe a bit, but they are required to do a hand check if you ask. I'd rather be safe than sorry!

if your camera and video camera has no film/tape in it, is it safe to put it in luggage? i'm not too crazy about having to take both in my carry on along w/ 8 rolls of film and 8 video tapes.

Not if you would like to see the equipment ever again.

Things of VALUE should NEVER go in your checked luggage. Read the fine print on the conditions of your ticket and you will discover that the airlines will NOT remiburse you for lost equipment like this.

These should be a carryon item only!

How about disposable cameras? My travel agent says she never had a problem with cameras or film going through the machine at the security check.

Do the scanners only affect film that's been used or on new rolls as well?

PLEASE have them HAND CHECK your film if you want your pictures to come out!!!

I was in a photography class and took a trip to Alaska last year - carried on my film (through 2 gates - each way) - ALL my film spotted and none of my pictures came out good!!

A lot of people talk about developing their film in Florida - that's a great idea. If you're driving or renting a car, how about buying your film at a local Walmart once you're there????

We took our Camcorder, as we always do. We videotaped a LOT, as we always do. We FLEW down for the first time ever and when we came home, many places throughout our many VHS-C tapes have NO Sound! :( I dont think it was faulty VHS-C tapes because there are many of them and it is not the whole tape. It is just certain places throughout the tape that the sound just MUTES and then comes back again. We have never had this happen to us since we usually drive down and videotape all the way there and back and never had an issue. This time, we had our Video Camera bag with us and they sent it through the scanner, and we got to FL and used the camera (the VHS-C tapes were STILL packaged), we opened up NEW tapes, inserted them, taped, and then later tried to play back some tapes at the hotel only to discover that some of them were "muted". I keep telling my girls "Well at least we have the IMAGES", trying desparately to CONVINCE MYSELF more than them! LOL  Our digital pictures, thankfully seemed fine. But alas, poor videotapes, we lost your sound! LOL We always tape a LOT throughout our trips and it is a shame, but we will be driving down in June and I will make up the loss then! ;)

Well if you are driving there you can just drive it with you and back. If you are renting a car because you flew there of course you can buy film wherever.

I am pretty sure the film kiosks all at Disney are Kodak. A little expensive but I have used them before.
