There was a competiton back in... oh, 1992 or so. First Kristi Yamaguchi got out and pranced around and did a "Juliet" routine. She did very will and scored nicely.

Then Midori Ito hit the ice and it was all over. It was like she was showing the audience what figure skating can be and it totally outshone everything else done that evening. Ito was an amazing artist and the sport lost big when she retired.

Tara Lipinski's gold medal skate was pretty fantastic too but I've never seen anyone skate like Ito.

Thanks PhotobearSam, I love this thread! It's bringing back such wonderful memories. I loved watching Philippe Candeloro skate again. He was amazing! Here are a couple of my stand out performances. I love emotional and moving numbers as well.

One of my favorite skaters and numbers of all time. Paul Wylie skating to Schindler's List. It makes me cry. :sad1:

Oksana Baiul. Her artistry on the ice will never be matched. She was breathtaking.

Michelle Kwan. Simply a beautiful number to Disney's Mulan.

I'm not into ice skating and can only name one or two people, but I thought the greatest routine I ever saw was when Brian Boitano skated to the song "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" from the movie South Park.

If you haven't seen the movie, it's the full-length feature of the reviled cartoon show South Park.

Anyway, in the movie they sing the song. It sort of pokes fun at him and here are the lyrics:

What would Brian Boitano do
If he was here right now,
He'd make a plan
And he'd follow through,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.

When Brian Boitano was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.

When Brian Boitano was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.

So what would Brian Boitano do
If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd kick an *** or two,
That's what Brian Boitano'd do.

I want this V-chip out of me,
It has stunted my vo-ca-bu-lar-y.

And I just want my mom
To stop fighting everyone

For Wendy I'll be an activist, too,
*** that's what Brian Boitano would do.

And what would Brian Boitano do,
He'd call all the kids in town,
And tell them to unite for true
That's what Brian Boitano would do.

When Brian Boitano travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
and saved the human race again

And when Brian Boitano built the pyramids,
He beat up Kubela Kong.

*** Brian Boitano doesn't take s@*t from an-e-y-body

So lets all get together,
And unite to stop our mom's
And we'll save Terrance and Phillip too,
*** that's what Brian Boitano do.

And we'll save Terrance and Phillip too,
*** that's what Brian Boitano dooooo,
That's what Brian Boitano do.

ANYWAY, I saw him do a routine to this song and I thought that was great. He took a song that was kind of poking fun at himself and he turned it around and had a great time with it. I remember it to this day.

Back in the early 90's, I watched Dorothy Hamil skate to "Do the Bear Cat".

It was amazing! I was totally wowed by her performance! I have searched everywhere for a video of it and I can't find it anywhere.

It was both cute and sexy at the same time!:cool1:

Elvis Stojko's silver medal skate in 1994 (I still say he should have won the gold.)

For me there are SO many!

I too, was in tears the first time Ekaterina Gordeeva took the ice with out Sergei Grinkov. When I saw her extend her arm as if she were taking his hand, I just lost it.

I also loved Michelle Kwan when she skated to "Field's of Gold" during the exhibition at the Olympics in Salt Lake ( I think....may have been Nagano). There was a puddle of water on the ice and she trailed her hand in it during a back spiral. The camera caught a close up of her face and she was crying. It still gives me shivers.

Paul Wylie skating to anything, but especially an exhibition piece he did to "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis are some of my favorites.

Now for my all time favorite piece.....this one a funny one. Scott Hamilton did a professional competition where he had on a black costume with what looked like flaps all over it. He skated to music from the "Wizard of OZ" and acted out all the parts as the music for that section of the movie came on. He would turn over one or more of the flaps and it would have something that represented the character for which the music was playing. It was incredibly long....I want to say almost 6 minutes and finished with the Witches Hat coming down from the ceiling and covering him. It was the silliest and most amazing skating performance I have ever seen by anyone.

I could go on and on, there are SO many more.....but I'll stop for now.

Linda

I see it like an Oscar, Academy, Tony, etc. No one really knows how won. It is not like a race where someone finished first or someone scored more points.

Talent? Absoultely!
Graceful? Positively!
Strength and coordination? You bet?

A sport with a winner? Not for me.

I love many of Scott Hamilton's performances. Two of my other favorites are Todd Eldredge skating to For the Glory from the Civil War soundtrack and Kurt Browning doing Brick House. It was really sad watching Gordeeva skate without Grinkov, they were amazing together.

Paul Wylie's Silver Medal winning performance at the Olympics.

That one's my favorite too. I had been a huge fan of his for soooo long. I was thrilled to see him medal at the Olympics! :cheer2: A lot of people were like "Who?" and expected Christopher Bowman, Kurt Browning and lots of others to do well.

I did love Christopher Bowman's exhibition of Woolly Bully. He's one that never lived up to his potential, so sad.
